Abstract

The growing influence of social media on language acquisition has opened new avenues for enhancing student engagement in foreign language learning. However, its impact on verbal participation remains underexplored. This study investigates the role of TikTok as an instructional tool in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) speaking classes, focusing on its effectiveness in fostering student engagement. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study integrates quantitative pre-test and post-test assessments to measure engagement levels and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to capture students’ perceptions. The findings indicate a significant increase in engagement: statistical analyses reveal notable improvements in students’ participation, while qualitative insights highlight TikTok’s capacity to enhance motivation, peer interaction, and authentic language practice. These results suggest that TikTok is a dynamic platform for improving speaking skills and engagement, offering valuable implications for educators seeking innovative teaching strategies in the digital era.

Abstract

This study assesses the quality of a Maritime English coursebook used in a leading vocational maritime education program in Indonesia. The evaluation is based on expert opinions and criteria drawn from English for Specific Purposes (ESP) principles. A qualitative descriptive method was used, supported by document analysis. Data were collected from four expert raters using a 48-item Likert scale evaluation sheet. The analysis was done manually, focusing on item trends and using thematic categorization based on ESP indicators. The coursebook is considered relevant to maritime contexts, with strengths in vocabulary use and realistic tasks. However, it shows inconsistency in instructional design and does not fully align with learner-centered approaches expected in ESP materials. The findings are useful for maritime education, ESP material development, vocational curriculum design, and coursebook evaluation in applied linguistics, maritime training centers, and language education programs. This study also presents an expert-based evaluation framework for ESP coursebooks in maritime settings, addressing the lack of research using qualitative analysis based on expert judgment rather than student feedback.

Abstract

Abstract. Textual metafunction helps the authors develop text coherently and cohesively and significantly aids readers in understanding the idea, especially in EFL textbooks. EFL textbook has become the essential learning material in EFL classrooms which it should be delivered with clarity to fostered students to grasp the material. Due to the crucial role of EFL textbooks in EFL classrooms, this study aims to unveil how theme-rheme and thematic progression occurred in reading passages of Indonesian and Samoan EFL textbooks. To attain the aims of the study, twelve reading passages from the Indonesian EFL textbook and eight reading passages from the Samoan EFL textbook for year ten were examined. Data that has been examined by theme-rheme proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) revealed that topical theme is a common type of theme found in Indonesian and Samoan EFL textbooks. Concurrently, these textbooks have the same type order in the occurrence of theme-rheme’s type, from the most common to the least type of theme that appeared. However, the Samoan EFL textbook contains a smaller variety of components in theme types due to the limited text genres in it. After examined thematic progression of these textbooks, and it revealed that the zigzag theme pattern was the majority theme pattern. Alongside the zigzag theme pattern becoming the majority pattern, these textbooks had different order for the second and third place of theme pattern due to the various contents of these EFL textbooks. This study provides textual metafunction, especially theme-rheme and thematic progression, which could be analyzed in EFL textbooks and, eventually, in literary texts.

Abstract

This study focuses on the implementation of blockchain governance and teacher empowerment in the Merdeka Curriculum to enhance digital entrepreneurship in education. Although digital technology is advancing rapidly, many educators face challenges in integrating technology into their teaching processes. Therefore, the objective of this research is to examine how technology can help improve the quality of education. This study aims to explore several ways in which blockchain governance can enhance educational data management and how teachers can support the development of students' digital businesses within a more flexible curriculum. The research employs a qualitative method by conducting surveys and in-depth interviews with teachers and education administrators in Indonesia. Thematic analysis is used for qualitative data, while descriptive statistics are applied to quantitative data. The results of the study indicate that although the majority of teachers are highly interested in digital technology, they still face difficulties in implementing blockchain governance due to a lack of infrastructure and guidance. However, the Merdeka Curriculum provides teachers with the freedom to innovate in their teaching methods, which opens the door for digital education businesses. According to the discussion, blockchain governance can improve transparency in educational data management. On the other hand, teacher empowerment through technology-based training is crucial to fostering innovation in education. This study offers insights into how the application of technology and teacher empowerment are essential in creating a more innovative and effective educational ecosystem.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceived benefits of Digital Storytelling (DST) as an instructional approach aimed at developing speaking-related competencies among highly motivated English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in an Islamic private university in Central Java, Indonesia, where the majority of academics are Muslims. Implementing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the research combines quantitative observations of learners’ speaking activities with qualitative insights into their experiences and reflections. While the data indicate improvements in certain aspects of speaking, particularly in areas such as confidence, engagement, and idea formulation, the findings are interpreted cautiously due to the small sample size and specific contextual factors. Students reported that DST activities enhanced their motivation, reduced their anxiety, and provided them with greater autonomy in expressing themselves orally. Rather than positioning DST as a panacea for speaking fluency, the study suggests that it may serve as a complementary pedagogical tool that supports affective and cognitive dimensions of oral language learning in culturally specific EFL contexts.

Abstract

The practice of ESP learning in maritime colleges is heavily depended on the coursebook. This study evaluates the coursebook 'Bahasa Inggris untuk Perwira Kapal Niaga' used by nautical cadets at Politeknik Bumi Akpelni. Using Daous and Celce-Murcia (1979) checklist, this study attempt to assess the alignment of coursebook content with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards and the principles of English as an International Language (EIL). Using a qualitative research approach, the study combined content analysis of the coursebook focusing on aspects such as linguistic accuracy, relevance of topics, integration of language skills, and intercultural elements with interviews involving lecturers, officers, and cadets. The findings reveal that while the coursebook incorporates several IMO standards, such as the language and the content, more EIL principles must be covered, particularly regarding linguistic diversity and adaptability in real-world scenarios. For instance, the coursebook lacks exposure to varied English accents, non-native speaker interactions, and culturally diverse communication contexts that cadets may encounter in multinational crews. Interviews highlighted the book"™s strengths in providing foundational maritime terminology but noted its limitations in fostering practical cross-cultural communication skills. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating EIL principles with IMO standards in maritime English education to enhance the communicative competence of future seafarers. The recommendations, including revising the coursebook to incorporate more interactive and culturally diverse exercises, can significantly improve cadets"™ preparation for global maritime operations. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on improving maritime English education and curriculum development.

Abstract

There has to be a new way of thinking about reading in this technological age. This approach is called a multimodal approach. It is an approach that contributes to several modes in the reading sources. To explore students' attitudes towards reading through a multimodal approach in terms of their conative attitudes’ perception, this study employs this approach. This study used a descriptive quantitative method to fulfill the purpose. Fifteen students were purposively selected as the sample. They had the same characteristics, such as having completed the previous reading class. Ten steps were involved in conducting the study. The data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire. A statistical analysis using SPSS was performed on the collected data. According to the numbers, four out of the eight categories are significantly high, accounting for 46.7%. It can be concluded that students have a pleasant impression. The statements made by the students demonstrate that they remained focused on reading through the channel informed by the teacher, participated in class, avoided procrastination with classmates, and engaged in reading. It can be concluded that based on the quantitative data, the students’ conative attitude perception towards the implementation of the multimodal approach in their reading class is positive.

Abstract

Integrating Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching necessitates striking a balance between global educational innovations and local cultural and religious contexts. This ethnographic study examines how faith-based values and cultural norms influence the integration of TPACK among EFL teachers in the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) of Indonesian Islamic schools. Using a multidisciplinary framework combining educational technology, sociocultural theory, and religious studies, the research addresses: (1) How do faith and culture shape teachers’ TPACK practices? (2) What challenges and opportunities arise in aligning technology with Islamic educational values? (3) How do PLCs help or hinder culturally responsive TPACK development? Data were collected through classroom observations, field notes, photo voice, and school documents. Findings indicate that religious and cultural commitments influence technology adoption and enhance lesson relevance by connecting to students' experiences. PLCs provide collaborative spaces to address value-based concerns, share strategies, and co-create approaches that ensure teaching effectiveness and cultural and religious consistency. The study highlights the need for context-sensitive professional development to facilitate the sustainable integration of technology in EFL settings.
