Abstract

A deep-plan office building design limits daylight access on the workspace distant from the side window. Horizontal Light Pipe (HLP) is one of the light transport systems that can deliver daylight to these areas. The research aim was to explain and evaluate the effect of HLP’s opening distribution area on daylight performance at deep plan-private office space. The research method was experimental with simulation as a tool. Daylight level and distribution of the base case, HLP with an opening distribution area of 6.6 m2 were compared with the case, HLP with an opening distribution area of 3.41 m2. The results showed that both cases distributed daylight uniformly. A 50% reduction of HLP’s opening distribution area, from 6.6 m2 to 3.41 m2 improved the average Daylight Factor as big as 6.42%. HLP with a smaller opening distribution area can be applied as the main source of daylight on deep-plan office spaces

Abstract

Direct evaporative cooling has been widely known as the passive design strategy for ameliorating the thermal conditions of building in hot-dry climates. In the recent past, the strategy has been extended to warm-humid climates. The scope varies from exploring the system to applying the method to buildings. Few studies have been conducted regarding its application on a multi-story residential building. In response to this gap, the present study will explore the strategy's applicability on the typical low-rise housing in Surabaya and analyze its environmental consequences. Simulation is used as the primary method for the analyses. Results of the study show that direct evaporative cooling is applicable in warm-humid tropics, but with some notes regarding the increase of air humidity. Dimensional properties of the cooling pad can be arranged to minimize the increased humidity.

Abstract

Houses in warm and humid tropical regions, like Indonesia, often experience uncomfortable conditions due to high temperatures aggravated by high humidity. With its adsorptive characteristics, natural coconut fiber can be utilized as wall panels and assigned to regulate house humidity levels. Research focusing on investigating the adsorptive capability of the natural coconut fiber in controlling humidity is widely available, but that specifically examines the effect of the surface area of the material on air humidity conditions in humid tropical extant houses is still limited. A field experiment was conducted in a small Surabaya house. The study analyzes the impact of coconut fiber (CF) wall panels on humidity conditions in each house room and the optimal surface area of the wall panels. CF wall panels were found to reduce the indoor relative humidity (RH) significantly. The optimal surface area varied depending on room characteristics. The optimal surface area of the wall panels for the living room is six (6) m² with a 28% RH reduction, for the bedroom is six (6) m² with a 27% reduction, and for the kitchen is five (5) m² with a 27% reduction.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between architecture, digital placemaking, and time, addressing theoretical gaps and their relation. While digital placemaking has seen significant advancements, its integration with architecture and temporal dynamics remains insufficiently explored. To bridge this gap, the research conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) of 448 articles published between 2014 and 2024, with 23 selected for in-depth analysis. Using qualitative content analysis, the study identifies key intersections between these domains. Findings reveal that contemporary architecture is fundamentally transformed by digital technology as design strategy to shape how places connect across time that could connect collective memory. By uncovering critical dynamics between architecture, time, and digital placemaking, the study proposes a theoretical framework to guide future research and innovative design strategies. Emphasizing the interplay of spatial and temporal interactions in architectural design, this research enhances understanding and provides a foundation for projects that align with the evolving demands of digital placemaking, ultimately shaping human experiences in digitally augmented environments.

Abstract

The rapid rise of modern lifestyles and technologies, along with disturbances to natural imbalances, has threatened the resilience of traditional architecture worldwide, including Indonesia. While some communities embrace modern structures as symbols of contemporary life, others adapt traditional buildings to changing needs while maintaining cultural identity. This study examines the resilience of Indonesian traditional architecture through a systematic review of 40 cases taken from existing research articles. It applies a resilience framework for the data analysis to reveal the extent to which the architecture responds to current changes and imbalances. Findings show two tendencies: modernisation drives changes in materials, layouts, and functions, while enduring connections to climate, spatial logic, and cultural principles. Adaptations range from substantial modifications that retain structural and functional integrity to superficial applications of traditional ornamentation on modernised buildings. Although a few cases fail to adapt, most demonstrate adaptive resilience, maintaining both function and cultural meaning.

Abstract

The market should have flexibility in its use. This study aims to design a market that has high flexibility. Highly flexible market design aims to create a longer market life, more adaptive to future changes, and a market that can contract and expand as needed. The flexible marketplace will be designed using a concept-based framework method. This method describes abstract ideas in a flexible market form. Then, abstract ideas are processed starting from making hypotheses, perfecting, mapping, proposing moments, arranging elements, and proposing. The results show that the proposed design is capable of forming a flexible market that applies flexible architectural principles, such as adaptive market space, retractable market roof, and mobile stalls.

Abstract

The SDG's primary target of providing an inclusive environment has a lot to do with the quality of public services. However, in terms of infrastructure, there are still various shortcomings, especially in implementing designs based on inclusive design.  Malang City, one of the cities with new public service facilities, chose an existing building to become a public service mall. Issues that occur include unfriendly circulation, inappropriate space functions and not adequately accommodated mobility of users with special needs, elders and children because there is only one access. This research uses a qualitative approach with observation and interviews as a method and the principle of inclusive design as a research tool. The result of the study from this research is that the Mal Pelayanan Publik Merdeka Kota Malang has not yet become an inclusive public facility.
