Abstract

This study was conducted with the primary aim of identifying the main barriers in mathematics learning and determining effective teaching strategies to overcome them. Employing a qualitative research approach, data were collected from twenty respondents comprising educators and stakeholders in the field of education. To ensure a rigorous interpretation of these perspectives, the data underwent thematic analysis, allowing for the systematic categorization of participant responses into core pedagogical themes. The findings indicate that the most prominent barriers are low student motivation and lack of parental support, with 90% of participants identifying these as critical challenges affecting student learning outcomes. These factors contribute significantly to disengagement and reduced academic performance in mathematics. On the other hand, the study also reveals encouraging trends. All respondents (100%) expressed a positive attitude toward collaborative lesson planning, emphasizing that working together in designing learning activities enhances both teacher creativity and instructional effectiveness. A substantial majority (86.67%) also acknowledged the potential of technology integration in making mathematics more accessible and engaging. Furthermore, there was unanimous agreement on the importance of ongoing professional development (100%) as a vital component for teacher growth and improved pedagogy. This research offers a novel contribution by bridging the gap between stakeholder-identified barriers and specific collaborative interventions, providing a localized framework for teacher-led reform. Taken together, these findings highlight the need for comprehensive educational interventions that include strengthening teacher capacities, fostering home-school collaboration, integrating digital tools in classrooms, and promoting continuous teacher training. Such efforts are essential to improve students' understanding, interest, and achievements in mathematics.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the English language skills required for effective physics teaching in bilingual classrooms and to address the limited evidence on how English proficiency supports content delivery in Indonesian EMI settings. There is a gap between teachers' language preparedness and the demands of the classroom since many teachers still struggle with both receptive and productive abilities, despite the fact that English is being used as a medium of instruction more and more. A descriptive quantitative survey was employed, involving 51 physics teachers and pre-service teachers who completed a 40-item Likert scale questionnaire measuring listening, speaking, reading, writing, and professional development needs related to bilingual instruction. The findings show that writing had the lowest mean score (3.46), while listening had the highest mean score (3.75), followed by reading (3.74) and speaking (3.58). These results imply that in bilingual physics classrooms, receptive skills take precedence over productive skills. The study finds that in order to boost teachers' confidence and classroom efficacy in EMI-based instruction, teacher education programs should integrate English language development with physics pedagogy and build listening and reading competencies.

Abstract

English technical vocabulary is an important component in chemistry learning, particularly for understanding concepts, laboratory activities, and scientific references. This study aims to examine chemistry students’ perceptions of English technical vocabulary in terms of its importance, challenges, learning strategies, and instructional needs. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed using a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 57 undergraduate chemistry students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta who had completed chemistry courses involving English terminology. The results indicate that students have a high perception of the importance of English technical vocabulary (M = 4.06), especially in supporting academic activities such as reading textbooks and understanding scientific articles. However, students also experience moderate challenges in mastering technical vocabulary (M = 3.82), particularly in distinguishing terms with similar meanings. To address these difficulties, students actively employ various learning strategies (M = 3.90), mainly through contextual learning, routine reading, peer discussion, and the use of digital tools. In addition, students express a strong need for systematic instructional support (M = 3.98), including collaboration between chemistry and English lecturers. Overall, the findings suggest that although English technical vocabulary is perceived as essential, targeted and integrated vocabulary instruction within chemistry courses is still required to reduce learning difficulties and support students’ conceptual understanding.

Abstract

English words appear everywhere in chemistry classes. Even so, knowing the words on paper does not mean that students feel comfortable using them. Quite a few students say they can memorize terms for an exam, but the meaning slips away when they need to explain or apply the terms in actual writing. This situation led the researcher to examine how chemistry students study these terms, whether they mostly memorize definitions or try to understand their meanings and how they are used. Fifty chemistry students took part in an online questionnaire with a five-point Likert response scale. This study employed a quantitative descriptive survey design, and the answers were summarized descriptively to identify which learning pattern stood out most. The results show that memorization remains prevalent, especially during exam periods. The highest mean score was 3.76 for the statement, “I often memorize chemistry terms without understanding their use.” Understanding concepts, however, seemed more helpful for long-term retention, with a mean score of 3.63. The strongest finding highlights the role of repeated exposure and contextual use of chemistry terms, which showed the highest mean score of 3.91. Based on these results, memorization helps in the short term, but its effect fades if the terms are not used again. When students understand a term and later encounter it repeatedly in class activities, the vocabulary tends to remain in their memory and feels easier to use naturally. These findings may contribute to the development of learning strategies that encourage continuous vocabulary practice, allowing terms to be applied not only in exams, but also in honest academic communication.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The aim of this study is to map undergraduate students’ physics vocabulary needs in classical mechanics and modern physics by identifying their levels of familiarity, frequency of use, and perceived difficulty of scientific terms across different physics domains. Methodology: This study employed a descriptive quantitative survey method. The instrument was a researcher-developed structured questionnaire containing physics vocabulary items, validated by expert review. Data were collected online using Google Forms. Responses were measured with a three-point Likert scale and analyzed descriptively using Microsoft Excel software. Main Findings: The results show that students demonstrate high vocabulary recognition in classical mechanics and energy-related terms. Moderate recognition appears in laboratory and academic vocabulary. Low recognition is found in thermodynamics and modern physics terms, especially abstract and theoretical concepts. Overall vocabulary familiarity decreases as conceptual abstraction increases across physics domains. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces a systematic, domain-based mapping of physics vocabulary by integrating familiarity, frequency of use, and perceived difficulty across multiple physics fields. It advances existing research by providing comparative evidence between classical mechanics and modern physics, offering empirical insights that support targeted vocabulary instruction in higher education physics learning.
