Abstract

Abstract

Colonial rule in the Indonesian archipelago not only restructured political and economic systems but also sought to reshape local cultural values and modes of expression. Within this context, traditional literary forms played an important role in preserving cultural identity and articulating responses to colonial domination. One such form is pantun, a Malay poetic genre that conveys meaning through metaphor, parallelism, and indirect expression. This study examines how the pantun High Power, Unformed Resistance represents power, resistance, and democratic imagination during the colonial period. The research aims to explore how culturally grounded notions of authority and opposition are articulated through poetic discourse, and how pantun functions as a medium of subtle resistance and ethical governance. The study adopts a qualitative interdisciplinary methodology that combines close textual analysis with perspectives from postcolonial theory and cultural studies. The pantun is analyzed as both a literary text and a socio cultural artifact situated within the historical experience of colonial Indonesia. The findings reveal that power is constructed as moral and cultural authority rather than coercive domination, while resistance emerges as indirect, adaptive, and sustained through cultural continuity. The pantun also encodes democratic values such as consensus, balance, and communal responsibility, reflecting indigenous conceptions of governance. These findings suggest that pantun should be understood not merely as folklore but as a significant site of political meaning. The study contributes to literary and postcolonial scholarship by demonstrating how traditional poetic forms participate in the negotiation of power and the imagination of culturally grounded democracy under colonial rule.

Abstract

Literary works produced during colonial periods often function as sites where language, ideology, and resistance intersect. In Indonesian literary history, the poetry of Chairil Anwar occupies a central position in articulating nationalist consciousness during the late colonial era. While existing scholarship has extensively discussed the thematic dimensions of Anwar’s poetry, comparatively limited attention has been given to how linguistic form itself contributes to the construction of resistance and nationalism. Addressing this gap, the present study aims to examine how stylistic features in Chairil Anwar’s patriotic poetry linguistically represent colonial resistance and national identity. The study adopts a qualitative stylistic research design. Data consists of selected patriotic poems by Chairil Anwar sourced from authoritative published collections. Using a stylistic framework informed by established models in literary linguistics, the analysis focuses on lexical choice, figurative language, and syntactic structure. Data were analyzed through systematic identification, close interpretation, and contextualization of linguistically salient features within the sociohistorical context of colonial Indonesia. The findings reveal that nationalism and resistance are constructed through dense resistance-oriented lexicon, symbolic imagery grounded in collective experience, and syntactic patterns emphasizing agency, urgency, and unity. These stylistic strategies work cohesively to embed ideological meaning within poetic form rather than presenting it explicitly. The study demonstrates that language functions as an active ideological resource in Anwar’s poetry. This research contributes to Indonesian literary studies by providing a linguistically grounded analysis of nationalist poetry and highlights the value of stylistics for examining non-Anglophone literary traditions within postcolonial scholarship.

Abstract

Recognized globally as an intangible cultural heritage, the pantun remains a vital instrument for sustaining social harmony, collective memory, and cultural identity across the Indonesian archipelago. Yet, conventional literary criticism frequently reduces this vibrant oral tradition to its rigid formalistic structures, specifically its alternating rhyme schemes and strict syllable counts. This reductionism ultimately overlooks the dynamic socio-cognitive functions of the genre within contemporary discourse. This study directly challenges these formalist limitations. By deploying a hybrid framework of stylistics and cultural poetics, we investigate how distinct linguistic styles and thematic variations operate as active mechanisms for identity negotiation. Operating within a qualitative, descriptive-interpretative paradigm, we subjected sixty purposively sampled pantun stanzas from verified archival anthologies to a close, granular textual analysis. The empirical findings demonstrate that the pantun functions as a highly contested site of ideological negotiation, systemic social critique, and behavioral modification. Structurally, the deliberate semantic tension between the natural imagery of the sampiran (preparatory couplet) and the didactic weight of the isi (core message) establishes an associative cognitive bridge. This mechanism facilitates non-confrontational communication and the seamless transmission of communal ethics. Ultimately, this study offers a fresh trajectory for understanding how rigid poetic constraints adapt to modern communicative imperatives, providing a scalable framework to integrate traditional orality into contemporary applied linguistics and literary pedagogy.

Abstract

This study addresses the destabilization of moral frameworks among youth in contemporary Islamic societies, a phenomenon accelerated by rapid digitization. We investigate how the structural and stylistic mechanisms of traditional oral poetry can serve as pedagogical instruments to build ethical resilience among Gen Z and millennial cohorts in modern Aceh. Methodologically, the inquiry adopts a qualitative descriptive design grounded in pedagogical stylistics to conduct a close textual analysis of twenty purposively sampled advice quatrains from the Bunga Rampai Maluku Kie Raha anthology. Our analytical framework evaluates these texts across specific operational metrics: phonology, syntax, and conceptual metaphor. The empirical results reveal that the rigid structural blueprint of the quatrain, particularly the architectural division between the foreshadowing lines (sampiran) and the semantic core (isi), functions as an efficient cognitive delivery system that optimizes mnemonic retention. Additionally, the deliberate deployment of high-impact lexical markers combined with abrupt interrogative rhetorical shifts elevates generic ethical advice into absolute behavioral boundaries. These boundaries directly reinforce Acehnese socio-legal norms. Consequently, curriculum designers and language educators in Aceh can leverage trans-regional oral literatures to diversify character education frameworks, offering a vital alternative as localized oral traditions fade from daily usage. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that UNESCO-recognized traditional poetic structures operate not merely as historical artifacts, but as dynamic socio-pedagogical interventions capable of maintaining ethical stability during acute cultural transitions.

Abstract

The turn of the twentieth century in the Dutch East Indies was characterized by a rigid colonial diglossia and deeply entrenched indigenous patriarchal structures that severely gatekept formal education from women. While traditional scholarship evaluates early feminist movements through isolated socio-historical or biographical lenses, this study addresses a distinct research gap by exploring the trans-regional sociolinguistic dimensions of female resistance. The primary objective is to investigate how language variation, stratified honorifics, and institutional registers are deployed as instruments of defiance in E. Rokajat Asura’s biographical novel Raden Dewi Sartika, drawing conceptual parallelisms with historical Acehnese female discourse. Utilizing a qualitative literary-sociolinguistic framework grounded in Dell Hymes’ ethnography of communication and Mikhail Bakhtin’s heteroglossia, this research evaluates dialogue sequences and narrative prose at a fine granularity. The findings reveal that characters strategically manipulate formal, elite registers and indigenous honorific systems to maintain surface-level compliance while successfully executing subversive institutional demands. This micro-linguistic negotiation directly parallels the historical socio-political discourse of aristocratic female figures in Aceh who appropriated customary speech to command authority. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that early Indonesian female agency relied on the tactical mastery of existing linguistic hierarchies to subvert oppression. These insights offer a novel trans-regional model that enriches the academic understanding of language, gender, and institutional autonomy across the shared socio-cultural landscape of Aceh and the wider Indonesian archipelago.

Abstract

The emergence of Angkatan 45 (the Generation of 1945) marks a critical milestone in the evolutionary trajectory of modern Indonesian literature, characterized by a radical departure from colonial and classical aesthetic constraints. While mainstream literary histories frequently examine this linguistic revolution through a centralized, macro-national lens, few studies investigate how regional identities, specifically the sociopolitical and cultural landscape of Aceh, intersected with this structural transformation. This study investigates the distinct poetic characteristics, philosophical conceptions, and structural dynamics of Angkatan 45 poetry by contextualizing its development within the historical consciousness and resilient cultural framework of Acehnese society during the revolutionary period. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design integrated with a critical historiographical review and micro-level structural textual analysis, this research analyzes the dual ideological pillars of Expressionism and Realism across selected poetic texts and the cultural manifesto of the Surat Kepercayaan Gelanggang. The findings reveal that the aesthetic deconstruction enacted by Angkatan 45, characterized by raw syntactic economy and colloquial diction, was deeply informed by peripheral struggles, where regional cultural symbols and islamic humanism served as vitalist markers of anti-colonial defiance. Ultimately, this paper highlights the pedagogical and socio-cultural value of preserving this decentralized literary genealogy, demonstrating how a period of intense high-stakes crisis successfully revolutionized the linguistic, semantic, and inclusive fabric of modern Indonesian discourse while preserving local cultural sovereignty.
