Abstract

Sungai Pisang Village is a village that has only been accessible by smooth road roads in the past year in Padang City. Previously this village was only accessible by sea and by lousy road. This condition causes the Pisang River community to lag in socio-economic and health aspects. This activity aims to screen for worms in elementary school students in Sungai Pisang village because worms are closely related to environmental health and affect the quality of human resources experiencing growth and development. Screening for worms is carried out by examining fecal preparations. This activity also aims to check visual acuity in elementary students and make references for sharp vision correction to learn well. Visual acuity checks were carried out using a Snellen card. The results of the examination showed that 3/143 students had worms and 3/273 students had visual disturbances. Students with worms are recommended to go to the Puskesmas to be given deworming medicine, and students with visual impairments are facilitated for examination by an ophthalmologist and given glasses if needed.

Abstract

Background: Functional capacity dramatically declines in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD-ND), impacting patient prognosis and quality of life. Accurate, practical assessment is crucial for timely intervention. This study evaluated functional capacity using Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and explored associated clinical factors in Indonesian CKD-ND patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang, enrolling 44 patients with CKD stages 3-5 not on dialysis. Using purposive sampling, we collected 6MWT distance (6MWD) following ATS guidelines and extracted demographic/clinical data (age, gender, BMI, eGFR, etiology) from medical records. Functional capacity, expressed as Metabolic Equivalents (METs), was estimated from 6MWD and patient data using the Nury formula. Descriptive statistics summarized the findings. Results: The cohort (54.5% male, mean age 56-65 years) predominantly had advanced CKD (43.2% Stage 5) and hypertension etiology (45.4%). Functional capacity was severely impaired: mean 6MWD was low (Men: 291m, Women: 255m), and a striking 70.5% of patients exhibited low functional capacity (<3.0 METs). No participants achieved high capacity (>6.0 METs). Lower mean 6MWD and a higher prevalence of low METs were distinctly observed in patients with lower eGFR and advanced age. Conclusion: This study reveals profound functional limitations in Indonesian CKD-ND patients well before dialysis initiation. Lower eGFR and older age were strongly associated with poorer performance. The 6MWT effectively quantifies this impairment, highlighting its utility for routine screening and emphasizing the urgent need for functional assessment and rehabilitation strategies in CKD-ND management.

Abstract

Introduction : Ovarian cancer is the 8th most common cancer in women. High grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) is a subtype of ovarian cancer with the highest case and death rate compared to other types. Therefore, a preventive approach is needed by reviewing the underlying risk factors of this cancer. Body mass index (BMI) and parity are modifiable risk factors for ovarian cancer. This study aims to determine the relationship BMI and parity on high grade serous subtype ovarian cancer at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. Method: observational analytic study with a cross sectional approach. This research was conducted at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang using medical record data of epithelial ovarian cancer patients at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang from 2021 to 2022 with a sample of 129 patients. The data analysis method used in this research is the Chi-square test. Result : Epithelial ovarian cancer patients are most found at >50 years old (55%), menopausal woman (65.9%), non obese (77.5%) and  parous women (76%). Conclusion : There was no relationship between body mass index and parity with the incidence of ovarian cancer, subtype high grade serous, at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang.

Abstract

Background: School-aged children are particularly vulnerable to soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections due to frequent exposure to contaminated soil during play and poor personal hygiene practices. Although games have been widely used as educational tools in health promotion, there is limited research on the effectiveness of board games specifically designed to prevent STH infections in children. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a board game-based educational intervention in enhancing knowledge of STH among elementary school students. Methods: Analytical experimental design using a pre-test and post-test intervention approach without a control group was employed. The subjects of this study were elementary school students in grades 3 to 6 who met specific criteria. A total of 94 students participated. Knowledge was assessed using questionnaires. The intervention involved small-group sessions (4–6 students per group) using a custom-designed educational board game about STH. The collected data were analyzed using a dependent t-test, while multivariate ordinal regression was employed for multivariate analysis. Results: The average test score improved from 0.60 (± 0.15) to 0.74 (± 0.14) post-intervention, representing a significant 14% increase in knowledge (p = 0.00). Age was not a significant predictor of post-test performance (β = 0.310; p = 0.429). Male students (β = 1.068; p = 0.013) and those in grade 4 (β = 2.031; p = 0.036; OR = 7.62, 95% CI: 1.15–50.56) were significantly more likely to achieve higher post-test scores. Conclusion: Board game-based education effectively improved knowledge about soil-transmitted helminth infection among elementary school students. This study offers novel evidence supporting the use of board games for helminthiasis prevention.

Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the third most common malignancy worldwide. Chronic inflammation, including intestinal protozoan infection, is linked to its risk. This systematic review examined the association between protozoan infection and colorectal cancer. Literature was searched in five databases (2014–2024), screened with PRISMA, and assessed using the JBI checklist. Thirty-two studies were reviewed. Protozoan infection incidence was generally higher in colorectal cancer than in non-cancer or other cancer groups. Blastocystis sp. was the most common species. Eighteen of 22 studies showed significant associations, particularly with Blastocystis sp., Cryptosporidium sp., Pentatrichomonas hominis, and Entamoeba histolytica. Factors involved included demographics, biology, environment, lifestyle, clinical history, and cancer stage. Most studies support a significant link. Opportunistic protozoan infections may worsen colorectal cancer progression, and chronic Cryptosporidium infection may induce preneoplastic lesions.
