Abstract

Diarrhea is a change of the feces form as well as an increase of the frequency of defecation more than three times in 24 hours. Causes of diarrhea can be either infection or non-infection. The cause of infectious diarrhea that is often unnoticed is intestinal parasite infection. Epidemiologically, there is not much data about intestinal parasite infection in diarrhea patients. The aim of this study is to describe the description of intestinal parasite infection in feces specimen of diarrhea patients that treated at the pediatric ward of Dr. M. Djamil Padang Hospital in 2016-2021 .This research is a descriptive observational research using secondary data from the medical records of diarrhea patients that treated at the pediatric ward. The sample includes all that fulfilled the criteria, with total 108 patients. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis. The results showed that the majority of patients were in the age between 0 to 5 years old (56,5%) and male (33.8%). Most diarrhea was acute diarrhea (97,2%) with mild to moderate dehydration (76,9%). Patients that infected by intestinal parasite were found in three people (2.8%) with the same parasite which was Entamoeba histolytica in the cyst stage, and also there were no helminth found in this research. Laboratory examination showed that all three had normal Hb and leukocyte levels, there was no blood in the feces and one had mucus in the feces. Three diarrhea patients that infected by intestinal parasite were given rehydration therapy (100%) and antiparasitic drug such as metronidazole (100%). The conclusion of this study is all of the feces specimens of diarrhea patients from this research described that the diarrhea was not caused by intestinal parasites.

Abstract

Background: Beta thalassemia major is a genetic blood disorder inherited by parents thalassemia traits (carrier) characterized by abnormal hemoglobin formation. Abnormalities during the process of hemoglobin formation cause gene changes or mutations that cause symptoms of severe anemia which has a long-term clinical impact on patients. High performance liquid chromatography can be used to determine the description of abnormal hemoglobin analysis, thus suspected diagnosis of thalassemia β major can be established by the clinician as a definitive diagnosis to enhance a more comprehensive diagnosis. Primary theraphy of beta thalassemia major is blood transfusion to support the quality of life regularly throughout the patient's life, transfusion of patients requires measurements such as pre-transfusion hemoglobin levels.  Objective: This study aims to determine the description of the results of the analysis of hemoglobin patients with suspected thalassemia beta major at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. Methods: This study used a cross sectional design.  The sampling technique uses total sampling with a total sample of 19 people from 1-35 years old. Patient data was from the suspected diagnosis of medical records established by clinicians at Dr. M. Djamil Hospital Padang. This data was analyzed univariately. Results: The results of this study indicated is mostly female with an average age of 13,74 years (SD ±12.1). This study resulted in a low pretransfusion hemoglobin average of 6.20 g/dL. The results of hemoglobin analysis for beta thalassemia major with average HbA (48,1%), HbA2 (27,3%) and HbF (24,5%). Conclusion: The results of the examination hemoglobin analysis on the HPLC method had results that did not compatible predictions of the suspected diagnosis of beta thalassemia major from the clinician

Abstract

Worm infections caused by soil-transmitted helminths (STH) occur almost throughout the world, especially in countries with tropical climates. In terms of prevalence, Indonesia ranks third in cases of worm infections, the majority of which infect school-aged children in coastal areas. This activity was carried out for students at SD IT Al Marhamah Kampung Dalam in Padang Pariaman Regency by providing education about preventing soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections using board game media. The activity aims to increase students' knowledge regarding soil transmitted helminth infections and their prevention. This activity uses a descriptive observational approach, with the target covering students in grades 3 to 6 at SD IT Al Marhamah. The activity was carried out on February 11, 2023, at SD IT Al Marhamah Padang Pariaman with board game media to educate school children about worm infections. Activities consist of licensing, implementation of service, and evaluation. In total, 94 SD IT Al Marhamah Padang Pariaman students participated in service activities. In terms of distribution, there were 39 men and 55 women. Before the extension activities, a pretest was carried out. Then, education was carried out and continued with a post-test to assess students' knowledge of STH infections. The research results showed that there was an increase in the level of knowledge before and after the intervention. It was concluded that the final results of the activity showed that the increase in the level of knowledge of SD IT Al Marhamah students regarding soil transmitted helminth infections after being given counseling using the board game method showed that the intervention was successful. The students who took part in the activity were satisfied with the extension activity and gave a positive response.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition of growth failure in toddlers due to chronic malnutrition and chronic infections, including worm infections and giardiasis. Kampung Baru Nan XX Village, Lubuk Begalung District, Padang City, is one of the areas with a high stunting rate. Education related to the prevention and treatment of this infectious disease is needed to improve public understanding in order to break the chain of causes of stunting. This counseling activity aims to improve public knowledge, especially mothers of toddlers, about the relationship between worm infections and giardiasis with stunting and preventive measures. The methods used are interactive lectures and discussions. The counseling involved mothers of toddlers and integrated health post cadres in the area. From the examination of 20 feces samples of toddlers in this area, no positive cases of worm infections and giardiasis were found. The results of this activity showed a good understanding of the participants regarding the importance of environmental sanitation, personal hygiene, and providing nutritious food to children. This counseling is effective in increasing public awareness regarding worm infections and giardiasis as risk factors for stunting. Follow-up activities can be carried out in the form of monitoring and providing nutritional interventions to support sustainable stunting prevention in this region.
