Abstract

Adolescent girls in developed and developing countries currently are prone to face malnutrition, both over- and under-nutrition. One of the causes is the shift from traditional to modern diets. This study aimed to determine the factors that influence the dietary behavior of adolescent girls in developed and developing countries. Scoping review performed following the PRISMA-ScR protocol with the Population, Exposure, and Outcome (PEO) approach. Described articles were published between 2014 and 2024, including abstracts and full texts from PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases. The search used the keywords “eating habits*” OR “diet*” OR “dietary intake”, “adolescent girls*” OR “adolescent women*” OR “young women”. The results showed that diets of adolescent girls in both developed and developing countries correlated with malnutrition, characterized by high consumption of fast food that high in sodium and low in fiber. In developed countries, this resulted in obesity, while in developing countries it caused iron and calcium deficiencies. In developed countries, adolescent diets influenced by bullying and media pressure that idealizes thin bodies, thus triggered irregular eating patterns. Meanwhile, in developing countries, low family income, limited access to healthy food in school canteen, lack of time and cooking skills triggered low-nutrition diets. Parental support played an important role in increasing the consumption of healthy foods. Unhealthy diets increased the risk of anemia, obesity, malnutrition, and other eating disorders. Adolescent girls’ eating behavior influenced by nutritional, social, economic, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors.

Abstract

Sweet beverages consumption during complementary feeding period is a major contributor to the increased risk of obesity and degenerative diseases in the future. Indonesia ranks third in Southeast Asia for sweet beverage consumption, with Central Java Province having the highest rate of fruit juice consumption during complementary feeding period (55.4%). An in-depth understanding of maternal characteristics is essential to formulate effective health promotion strategies to reduce sweet beverage consumption among children aged 6-23 months. Objective: This study aims to analyze the factors associated with sweet beverage consumption during complementary feeding period in Semarang Regency. Methods: This quantitative research uses a cross-sectional approach with 244 mothers of children aged 6-23 months in Semarang Regency. Univariate analysis was conducted using frequency distribution, while multivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression tests (p<0.05). Results: The percentage of high sweet beverage consumption among children aged 6-23 months in Semarang Regency was 63.93%. Lower maternal education (p=0.047), increasing family income (p=0.000), older child age (p=0.002), higher support from health cadres (p=0.030), and greater household food availability (p=0.000) were associated with a higher odds of sweet beverage consumption during complementary feeding. Conversely, healthy children (p=0.000) and greater access to information through social media (p=0.009) were associated with a lower likelihood of sweet beverage consumption during this period. Conclusion: Factors influencing sweet beverage consumption during complementary feeding include maternal education level, child health status, family income, child age, support from health cadres, access to information through social media, and household food availability.

Abstract

Adolescents are more likely to adopt risky health behaviors, such as smoking, alcohol use, and sexual activity. This study examined the links betweensmoking, alcohol use, and risky dating behavior and analyzed how these factors influenced risky dating and other behaviors. It is expected that this studywould be used as a foundation for developing appropriate integrated intervention for multiple risk behaviors among youths. This study was an explanatory research study with a cross-sectional approach. It involved 160 youths aged 15-24 years randomly selected from purposive villages. Participants completedself-administrated questionnaires with an enumerator present. Data were analyzed using univariate, chi-square, and multiple logistic regression. Smoking behavior, leisure activity, and self-efficacy were predictors of risky dating behavior. The self-efficacy variable also influenced multiple risk behaviors. A strong association was found between smoking, risky dating behavior, and alcohol use. One-third of the participants had dated and smoked recently, but only 10% ofthem had experienced high-risk dating activity, including petting and intercourse. Only 5% had experienced alcohol use (in particular, traditional alcohol), andno one admitted being involved with drug abuse.

Abstract

Grobogan District is a district with a sharp increasing of HIV/AIDS case compared to other districts over Central Java. This study aimed to identify public stigma to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and influencing factors. This explanatory study was conducted using cross sectional design worth 300 family head samples selected by using proportional random sampling on three subdistricts with highest HIV case within August - September 2014. Data collecting was conducted through face-to-face interview using structured questionnaire. Meanwhile, data analysis was conducted in univariate, bivariate using chi square and multivariate using logistic regression. Most respondents were men whose education level was mostly high school to the bottom level. Half of respondents were still stigmatizing PLWHA. Respondents whose families stigmatized had possibility of stigmatizing four times bigger than respondents whose families did not. Similarly, respondents holding negative perceptions toward PLWHA had possibility of stigmatizing twice bigger than those holding positive perceptions. Attitude of neighbors and public figures toward PLWHA also significantly related to respondent’s stigma to PLWHA. To sum up, family attitude and respondent’s perception to PLWHA were influencing factors of emerging stigma toward PLWHA. Therefore, it suggested that providing families and public any complete information about HIV/AIDS may decrease or remove the stigma.
