Abstract

The effectiveness of tuberculosis (TB) management and control programs is influenced by several factors, including sociocultural problems that affect delays in diagnosis and treatment and increased transmission risk in the community. How people viewed diseases and seeking behavior was socially constructed. The scoping review aims to understand the extent and type of evidence about the sociocultural implications of TB management and control programs. To address the research questions, a scoping review was conducted following PRISMA ScR as a guideline. Articles were searched in PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases. Searches were conducted in October 2022. The CASP checklist was used to measure the article's quality before being reviewed. A total of 15 articles were included, nine (9) studies conducted in Africa, two (2) studies in Papua New Guinea, one (1) study in India, one (1) study in Brazil, one (1) study in Yemen, and one (1) study in Nepal. Most studies were based on individual interviews (7), and three (3) studies included traditional/faith healer perspectives. Three main themes have been identified; sociocultural factors affected TB prevention, sociocultural factors affected TB-seeking behavior, and sociocultural factors affected treatment adherence. The review discovered that community practices, norms, and attitudes regarding perceived sickness impact TB care and control. To be effective and meaningful for the target population, the intervention must be attentive to cultural differences.

Abstract

Every year, adolescent pregnancy cases in Javanese society become challenging. Reproductive health education must be provided before the child enters puberty despite experiencing cultural barriers in its delivery. This study aims to explore children’s knowledge and attitudes about puberty and reproductive health to analyze the need for reproductive health education for children living in Javanese culture. This cross-sectional study sampled 174 children aged 9-11 years in the capital city of Central Java. Children in this study are female (54.6%) and male (45.4%), and 20.1% of them have already experienced puberty. As many as 48.9% of children have low knowledge, especially about puberty signs and menstruation. Most children have good attitudes about reproductive health, but 6.9% are permissive. There is no significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes (p-value=0.606). Puberty status is also unrelated to children’s knowledge (p-value=0.678) and attitudes (p-value=0.291). Permissive attitudes regarding adolescent pregnancy need to be highlighted. This is potentially harmful to children, especially if the child does not immediately engage in proper reproductive health education. The reproductive health educational model does not need to separate children’s classes based on their puberty status. The Ministry of Health and Education needs to improve children’s reproductive health knowledge by considering the character of Javanese society, which is still taboo.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of stunting in Semarang City is still relatively high. Low public knowledge about stunting prevention can increase the incidence of stunting. Stunting can be prevented before pregnancy. Prospective brides are strategic targets in stunting prevention so that they can prepare for a healthy pregnancy. Increasing the knowledge of the prospective brides can be done by providing education using media that follows the characteristics of the prospective brides, namely using Android-based flipbook media. Aims: The study aims to analyze the effect of education using Android-based flipbook media on increasing knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and intentions of prospective brides in stunting prevention in Semarang City. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental research design with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample of the research was prospective brides totaling 94 people, consisting of treatment and control groups of 47 people. Data collection used pre-test and post-test questionnaires to measure prospective brides' knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and intentions in stunting prevention. Results: The results showed that there were significant differences in the average knowledge score (p = 0.001), beliefs (p = 0.016), attitude (p = 0.001), and intention (p = 0.001) of prospective brides in stunting prevention. Conclusion: So it can be concluded that education about stunting prevention using Android-based flipbook media influences increasing knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and intentions of prospective brides in stunting prevention. The greatest influence is shown on the knowledge variable, which is equal to 29,7%.

Abstract

Background: Chronic malnutrition during a child's early years leads to stunting, a condition that can harm both their mental and physical development. Studies have indicated a correlation between parenting styles and stunted growth in children that the nutritional knowledge and practices of mothers significantly affect the dietary habits of toddlers. The perspectives and cultural convictions of mothers are significant but have received limited attention as factors that influence the nutritional well-being of children and adolescents. Aims: This review examined maternal factors as determinants of stunting in children under five. Methods: Three databases were used to search for literature, namely PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The key to the search is as follows: “maternal” or “mothers” and “factor” and “stunting” or “stunted” or “growth disorder” and “toddler” or “children under five.” The material displayed in search engines is selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: This review was done on nine articles that were screened and analyzed out of 1,450 articles. The articles come from Nepal, India, Indonesia, Ghana, Congo, Uganda, Lebanon, and the Central African Republic. The type of research articles was cross-sectional and case-control. Conclusion: This review has provided an overview of maternal factors contributing to the prevalence of stunting. These factors include maternal employment, the educational status of mothers, maternal body mass index, the diversity of the mother-child diet, maternal exposure to mass media, and maternal age.

Abstract

Uncontrolled population growth is a significant challenge for societies and governments, particularly in the healthcare sector. Indonesia as the world's fourth most populous country, faces this issue with a Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2.45, falling short of the intended target of 2.1 for achieving balanced population growth. Furthermore, Central Java Province, one of the most populous regions, records a TFR of 2.27, which is also below the target. It's crucial to note that even a slight decrease in TFR in a populous province can have a significant impact on the national TFR. This research investigates the determinants of fertility preference among women aged 15-49 in Central Java Province, using 2022 Family Life Survey data from the National Population and Family Planning Board 2022. The results of bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test (α=5%) indicate that fertility desires had a significant association with age at first marriage, education, occupation, and health insurance participation, but not related to contraceptive use. Multiple logistic regression (α=5%) reveals that women of reproductive age who married at 21 or older (AOR=0.791; 95% CI:0.786; 0.796) and employed women (AOR=0.798; 95% CI:0.793;0.803) were less likely to desire more than two children. On the other hand, women with health insurance subscriptions were more likely to desire more than two children (AOR=1.129; 95% CI:1.121;1.137). These findings emphasize that promoting women's education and employment, enhancing adolescent reproductive health programs, and aligning healthcare and family planning policies are essential strategies to reshape fertility preferences among women of reproductive age in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Street children are children under the age of 18 who spend most of their time living on the streets or other public places. The lack of supervision and education of street children, especially at the age of teenagers, makes street children have a high risk of premarital sex. Premarital sex is a major risk factor for unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. This study aims to determine how the behavior of street children in the city of Semarang in avoiding the impact of premarital sex behavior. This study uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach with the technique of taking research subjects using a questionnaire. The research subjects were 2 street children who were female and had had premarital sex. Triangulation research subjects were 2 people who were parents and caregivers of the research subjects. The research data was taken by in-depth interview technique. The results showed that the behavior of Unwanted Pregancies and STI prevention of research subjects was still poor. Both study subjects had experienced unwanted pregnancies. They never seek information about the impact of premarital sex and how to prevent it. They also never had a health professional consultation with health workers. To prevent contracting STIs, they are only being careful in choosing sex partner, choosing to be loyal to their boyfriend, or using condoms. To prevent pregnancy they use condoms or, preferably, interrupted intercourse. Unfortunately, these prevention technique was not carried out properly, causing the research subjects to experience unwanted pregnancies.
