Abstract

This study aims to explore the traditional economic systems of indigenous communities in Indonesia, focusing on the roles of local wisdom and cultural practices in sustaining livelihoods. The research examines Banten, West Java, Central Java, and Bali indigenous communities to understand how their economic systems integrate sustainability and cultural preservation. The study employs a qualitative ethnographic research design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation within the respective communities. Fieldwork focused on agricultural practices, economic distribution patterns, and the integration of cultural norms in economic activities. The findings reveal that the Kasepuhan communities in Banten and West Java practice sustainable rice farming under the guidance of traditional leaders, adhering to once-a-year planting to maintain soil fertility. In Bali, the Tri Hita Karana philosophy underpins the Subak irrigation system, ensuring harmony between agriculture, nature, and spirituality. The Samin community in Central Java demonstrates resilience through crop diversity and equitable resource distribution, prioritizing communal welfare and ecological balance. This study contributes original insights into the intersection of traditional knowledge and economic sustainability, addressing gaps in previous research that have often overlooked economic practices. It highlights Indigenous economic systems' adaptability and potential to inform sustainable development strategies.

The method used in this study is a historical method to reconstruct the history of plantations and their impact on community development in Onderafdeeling Kaliklatak. The first company to expand was NV Maatschappij owned by van E. Moormann&Co, producing the main crop of Robusta coffee which is in high demand worldwide. The relevance of opening large plantations to the people of Onderafdeeling Kaliklatak can be seen in several ways. First, there is a change in the position of local elites as landlords close to the colonial. Second, helping to create "improvement" of community infrastructure facilities and infrastructure around the Kaliklatak plantation. Third, encourage the development of economic activities and have an extraordinary impact on the surrounding community. Fourth, the large number of connecting road builders for the purpose of transporting coffee and rubber products has a broad and profound impact on traditional community patterns, not only for the people around the plantations but also for aspects of life in Banyuwangi. The creation of assimilation was due to a change in the orientation of their thoughts because their areas began to open up from the influence of the outside world.

Abstract

The existence of Chinese ethnicity in Banyuwangi is estimated since the 17th century, the existence of Chinese in Blambangan has certainly experienced an interesting dynamic process to be revealed, especially how the history of the existence and change of ethnic Chinese identity itself, from Aseng who incidentally is a foreigner to Osing who is a native of Banyuwangi . A certain society always presents stereotyped views. Likewise with Chinese identity in Banyuwangi. Referring to the view of cultural studies, identity is entirely a socio-cultural construction. No identity can emerge outside of cultural representation or acculturation. The dynamics of social change in the cultural dimension refers to cultural changes in society such as contact with other cultures which causes cultural diffusion and borrowing. This identity change phenomenon can be seen in the Chinese ethnic identity in Banyuwangi Regency. The history of the Chinese ethnic in Banyuwangi as a whole has experienced ups and downs caused by the conditions of Indonesian domestic and foreign socio-political culture, placing the Chinese ethnic in an uncertain position, and tending to become victims of Indonesia's social and political situation which is always turbulent. This then causes the ethnic Chinese to always be faced with difficult conditions that affect their existence as an ethnic group. As Chinese people in Banyuwangi, they generally admit to being confused about choosing whether to retain their distinctive Chinese (hereditary) characteristics, or have to completely abandon everything they received from their ancestors and completely merge into the majority society. This paper aims to discuss how the emergence of the history of ethnic Chinese in Banyuwangi Regency, formerly known as Blambangan, and how the dynamics of the development of social change for ethnic Chinese in Banyuwangi.
