Abstract

Chemistry is a multidimensional discipline that contains concepts from simple to complex and concrete to abstract. This makes it difficult for students to understand chemistry and causes a lot of misconceptions. Facts in the field show that only some students understand the concept of the periodic system of elements. In preliminary research, mobile learning has been studied and can improve the effectiveness of individual learning for students anywhere and anytime. This study aims to determine the feasibility of CHEMDIC mobile learning in preventing student misconceptions in the context of the periodic system of elements. This feasibility is reviewed based on the validity and practicality of mobile learning in preventing student misconceptions. The methodology in this study is Research and Development (R&D) using the 4D development model proposed by Thiagarajan with the following stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate. However, this research is limited only to the development stage due to several considerations such as time, effort, and facilities. The limited trial was carried out with 15 students of SMAN 1 Krian Sidoarjo who had obtained learning materials in the context of the periodic system of elements and were selected based on the largest number of students who were included in the category of not understanding concepts based on the results of the pretest. CHEMDIC mobile learning is declared valid if it fulfils the minimum mode score of 4, while it is stated as practical if it fulfils the minimum percentage of ≥61%. This research shows the results of the validity of CHEMDIC mobile learning with the acquisition of content validity mode scores of 5 with a very valid category and a construct validity mode score of 4 with a valid category. Then, practicality, with the acquisition of a percentage in the student response questionnaire of 96%, was in the very practical category. This result shows that android CHEMDIC mobile learning is feasible to prevent students' misconceptions about the material of the periodic system of elements.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are one of the four 21st-century skills defined as the ability to reason rationally and logically. In the context of chemistry, critical thinking plays a vital role as it is required to understand chemical concepts, mechanisms, equations, reactions, and elements, as well as the ability to make appropriate judgments. However, based on previous research and field surveys, it was found that students' critical thinking skills are generally low. Three levels of chemical representation in chemistry need to be connected integrally to develop an understanding of chemical concepts and critical thinking. Integrating the three levels of representation can be done through visualisation media in animation. Thus, a visual communication media that includes three representative levels is developed to improve critical thinking skills and facilitate students' understanding of chemical materials, especially in the context of reduction and oxidation reactions, namely the Redox Animation application. In this article, this research aims to develop a Redox Animation application that is feasible in terms of two learning media feasibility criteria, namely validity and practicality. The development research model used in this research is the Sukmadinata model, which has three main stages: preliminary studies, model development, and model testing. This study is limited to the trial step. The research data shows that the Redox Animation application developed meets the feasibility in development research on validity criteria with the acquisition of a content validity mode score of 4 with valid criteria and a construct validity mode score of 4 with valid criteria and practicality criteria with the acquisition of a percentage in a learner response questionnaire of 96.33% with efficient criteria. Thus, the Redox Animation application is declared feasible for enhancing students' critical thinking skills on redox reaction topics based on validity criteria and practicality criteria in development research.

Abstract

This research was conducted against the background of the facts in the field that the teaching materials used in learning chemistry use printed LKS / textbooks so that the chemistry learning felt by students is ordinary; the teaching model used is still teacher-centered which causes less active participation of students in learning. It causes the lack of development of critical thinking skills due to the lack of training for students to develop thinking skills. This study aimed to produce guided inquiry-oriented e-worksheets that are feasible as a learning media using live worksheets on electrolyte and non-electrolyte solution material that were reviewed through validity and practicality testing. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method based on the Borg and Gall method modified by Sukmadinata until the product trial stage. The product trial was limited to 28 students in class XI at Ta'miriyah Surabaya High School. The novelty of this research is the development of an e-worksheet, which can improve learning outcomes and train critical thinking skills; all 6 indicators of critical thinking skills, according to Facione, with the help of a live worksheet, so it is interactive. This study involved validators, namely 1 person from a chemistry teacher and 2 chemistry lecturer experts, respondents, namely 28 students, and 3 observers. E-worksheet validation results get modes 4 and 5 to be included in the valid and very valid categories. The practical results of the learner response questionnaire get a percentage between 92.86 - 100%, so it is said to be very practical. This is also supported by the learner activity observation sheet, which the observer observes. The research results show that a guided inquiry-oriented e-worksheet using live worksheets can train students' critical thinking skills on electrolyte and non-electrolyte solution materials.

Abstract

Chemistry is a relatively tricky science; thus, it must be studied in depth to avoid misconceptions. These misconceptions can be caused by students themselves, teachers, textbooks, material context, and teaching methods. One way to prevent misconceptions is by using learning media that is easy for students to understand. Field facts indicate that chemistry teaching in high schools is still conducted conventionally, and only a few students understand the concepts of chemical bonding. Mobile learning is an interactive multimedia that can enhance students' learning motivation. This research aims to determine the feasibility of using KOIN m-learning to prevent student misconceptions about covalent and ionic bonds. The feasibility of m-learning is reviewed from two aspects: validity and practicality. This study employs the Research and Development (R&D) methodology, utilizing the development model proposed by Sukmadinata. The limited trial was conducted in class XI-MEDITEK of SMA Ta'miriyah Surabaya, with 15 students selected based on the most significant number of students who did not understand concepts in the pretest results. The research data shows that (1) KOIN m-learning is declared valid as indicated by the content validity mode of 4 with category valid and construct validity mode of 4 with category valid, (2) KOIN m-learning is declared practical as indicated by the average results of the student response questionnaire, supported by observations of student activities, of  97.04% with category highly practical, The results indicate that KOIN m-learning is feasible to be used to prevent student misconceptions about chemical bonding material.
