Abstract

This research aims to identify the learning obstacles faced by students in the topic of quadratic equations. The data for this study were obtained through tests and interviews. A qualitative research method with a hermeneutic phenomenology design was employed. The study involved 30 ninth-grade students from a junior high school in Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan. Several learning obstacles were experienced by students in the concept of quadratic equations, namely: 1) ontogenic obstacles occur due to students' inability to grasp the concept of quadratic equations. This is caused by a mismatch between the learning or knowledge intended to be constructed by students and their thinking abilities; 2) Didactical obstacles arise from the lack of coherence in the material, both in terms of the interconnectedness of quadratic equation concepts and the continuity of the thinking process, as well as the presentation of less-detailed materials; 3) Epistemological obstacles occur because students' knowledge related to quadratic equations is limited to specific contexts only.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the hidden mathematical concepts behind the rice farming activities of Pandanwangi Cianjur. The research method is qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. The research location is in Pandanwangi Cultural Village, Bunikasih Village, Warungkondang District, Cianjur Regency, West Java. Pandanwangi Cultural Village was deliberately built by the Cianjur Regency Government to further introduce pandanwangi rice, which is the superior local variety of Cianjur Regency. Pandawangi rice farmers' cultural activities contain mathematical concepts that arise when determining seed class, number of seeds, nursery preparation, final seed selection with salt solution, seeding in nurseries, nursery maintenance, preparation of planting land, planting, fertilization in planting areas, planting maintenance, harvest, and post-harvest. The findings of this study show that there are mathematical concepts in agricultural activities on geometric content, including determining points, lines, angles, the area of flat shapes, the similarity of flat shapes, and algebra, including comparisons, percentages, and social arithmetic. The results of the research can be used as a teaching module to facilitate learning for students in the school curriculum.

Abstract

The main problem in this study is students' ability to think mathematically in solving mathematical problems in learning social arithmetic in their class through minimum guidance-based learning (PBL and DL). This research uses a mixed method to look at the description of students' mathematical thinking abilities and the tendency of these abilities based on students' self-efficacy levels. The results showed that the increase in students' mathematical thinking skills at each level of low self-efficacy based on n-gain calculations. In addition, there is no significant difference in the scores for improving students' mathematical thinking skills based on the learning model and the level of self-efficacy. There is no significant interaction between the Learning Model and the Level of Self-efficacy in determining the increase in the average score of students' mathematical thinking abilities. Other findings show that students with low self-efficacy tend to have limitations in the ability to think mathematically in the process of conjecture and convincing. On the other hand, students with moderate and high self-efficacy have more complete mathematical thinking abilities, including specialization, generalization, conjecture, and convincing. However, in the process of conjecture and convincing, two sub-processes are found, namely knowledge modification using factual knowledge, contextual tools, or substantive thinking, as well as the process of selecting relevant information in solving problems. Therefore, the two groups are divided into four groups based on the way students use conjecture and convincing mathematical thinking abilities, namely: (1) students use specialization mathematical thinking skills based on the knowledge learned from the teacher, (2) students use specialization mathematical thinking abilities based on knowledge acquired in everyday life, (3) students use convincing mathematical thinking abilities by examining the formula used or based on knowledge learned from the teacher, and (4) students use convincing mathematical thinking abilities based on the knowledge obtained in everyday life (factual knowledge).

Abstract

Mathematical literacy and ethnomathematics are the two main approaches to understanding mathematics in everyday life. Research on the two aspects should be conducted in an integrated manner. It is expected to be a reference for the development of urban mathematics education based on the social requirements of mathematics and individuals' mathematical competence in a cultural group. The primary goal of this research is to describe the Sundanese people's mathematical literacy through an ethnomathematical perspective. The research is focused on living equipment systems and technology, which is one of the elements of the seven universal culture elements. The study employed phenomenographic and ethnomethodological approaches with a realist ethnographic design. Participant observations and interviews were chosen as data collection techniques, while content analysis, triangulation, and identification of patterns were chosen as data analysis techniques. Ethnomathematics in living equipment systems and technology consists of counting, measuring, explaining, discovering, designing, and explaining activities. The results show that the ethnomathematics of the Sundanese community are relevant to the aspects of mathematical literacy consisting of content, context, and mathematical processes. The study's results emphasize that mathematical literacy and ethnomathematics cannot be separated from daily life.

Abstract

It is necessary to develop a mathematics learning model in pesantren that is associated with problems that are following the situation in the Islamic boarding school, for example, related to fiqh. This study used Design Didactical Research (DDR). The development of this didactic design was carried out using the Theory of Didactical Situation (TDS). The learning mathematics in pesantren is designed as follows: reading of the holy verses of Al-Qur'an and Hadith related to mathematics learning materials; the material and learning objectives associated with Islamic knowledge; and giving an overview of the benefits of studying the material to be studied in everyday life, especially when later becoming a cadre of the ulama. Didactic design development is based on the theory of didactic situation, namely: In the case of Devolution, santri are given the challenge of solving zakat and inheritance problems; in Mathematical Situations, santri who have not been able to complete the main difficulties are guided through questions, tables, and instructions. Likewise, santri, who already has problem-solving guesses, continues to test the validity of these assumptions by answering several questions, paying attention to tables, and carrying out instructions; 3) Situation of Institutionalization, santri makes conclusions with teacher guidance about essential points.

Abstract

Peers have an influence on the development of adolescents, especially prospective students, especially when choosing a major in a college. Choosing a major in a college for each prospective student is often related to the peer group. Some prospective students in Indonesia when choosing a major are still influenced by peers when making a decision, this cannot be separated from the role of peers as people who have more or less in common in age and school who can broaden their views and influence the social development of adolescents, especially when a teenager will decide something regarding his education and career in the future. This study aims to describe the peer factor in influencing student interest in choosing a major in mathematics education. This research was conducted at IAIN Padangsidimpuan and the research participants were 25 students of the tadris/mathematics education study program at IAIN Padangsidimpuan. This research uses quantitative and qualitative approaches with descriptive research and percentage analysis techniques. In this study, the data obtained are data derived from questionnaires that have been filled out by research respondents. Abstract

The issue, the significance of student self-efficacy in the learning process, is what inspired this study. This study set out to identify and characterize students’ self-efficacy capacities for studying the social arithmetic topic in light of their unique traits. This research is descriptive research through questionnaire analysis using percentages. A self-efficacy questionnaire plus a questionnaire for students’ responses make up the tool used to assess self-efficacy abilities. In this study, the data were collected and evaluated using a Likert attitude scale to determine whether students’ self-efficacy in studying the social arithmetic topic had increased. The scale in this self-efficacy contains three components, namely students’ assessment of: i) the level of task difficulty (magnitude); ii) the variety of tasks (generality); and iii) the degree of stability in completing a task (strength) in social arithmetic topic. The conclusion obtained in this study related to self-efficacy in mathematics is that it can be seen as a whole in learning social arithmetic topic showing that there are 79.05% of students giving a positive response, meaning that almost all students assess themselves positively when learning social arithmetic topic.

Abstract

Reversible thinking is a cognitive activity in finding a solution to a problem by arranging the direction of logical thinking from the end to the starting point. Reversible thinking requires a student to think logically in two ways. Therefore, reversible thinking influences students' success in solving problems. This study aims to identify students' thinking processes in solving problems that require reversible thinking ability. This research was conducted on junior high school students in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, using test instruments, interviews, and documentation studies. The tests given consisted of two types of problems, including tests on forward-thinking problems and tests on reversible thinking problems. The research subjects were students with high average mathematics scores in their class. The study found that students could answer the tests on forward-thinking problem-solving very well but could not work on similar questions with the backward-thinking process. Based on the interview results, one of the causes for the need for more backward-thinking ability is the limited learning resources or context when students first learn the concept.
