Abstract

Introduction: Equol is a metabolite of soy isoflavon called daidzein which is produced by gastrointestinal tract bacteria. This research aims to analyze the maturation of vaginal epithelium and dyspareunia symptoms in producing and non-producing equol menopausal women.Method: This is a cross sectional research. Subject was a community of menopausal women who fulfilled inclusion criteria. Subjects were asked to sign a written informed consent. Subjects underwent vaginal epithelium maturation assessment and were asked whether she experienced dyspareunia. Research was conducted in January 2017.Result: There was a significant difference on the maturation of vaginal epithelium and dyspareunia symptoms between equol producing and non-producing women (p < 0.05). This research found that in equol producing menopausal women, there was a shift-to-the-right vaginal epithelium maturation with more superficial cells compared to parabasal cells produced and less dyspareunia. Meanwhile, in women who did not produce equol, there was a shift-to-the-left vaginal epithelium maturation with more parabasal cells compared to superficial cells produced and more dyspareunia. Conclusion: In equol producing menopausal women, vaginal epithelium will undergo a shift-to-the-right maturation, with more superficial cells produced compared to women who did not produce equol.

Abstract

Abstract

The evaluation of IUD contraceptive services is still lack of quality until now. Many IUD acceptors choose to stop use contraception because they don't accept side effects such as bleeding, and fear of interfering with sexual intercourse. Adequate information from professional health personnel, in the form of counseling, is a very important step in helping women choose the best contraceptive method and according to their needs. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between education level and work period of midwives to the knowledge of midwives about IUD counseling. The research method uses a quantitative approach with a crossectional design. The number of respondents was 124 midwives Public Health Center in Bandung. The sampling technique uses consecutive sampling. Measurement of IUD counseling knowledge using a questionnaire that has been tested for validity and reliability using the Rasch Model with alpha chron-bach 0.87 (Good). Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 chi-square. The results of the study found that almost all of the 96% of respondents were lack of knowledge about counseling IUDs. The chi-square analysis results did not have a significant relationship between the level of education and knowledge of IUD counseling p = 0.548 (> 0.05). There is no significant relationship between the period of work with knowledge of IUD counseling p = 0.081 (> 0.05). Communication and counseling have been included in the Midwifery Diploma III education curriculum, but the level of education does not have a significant relationship to the knowledge of midwives about IUD counseling. This shows that the learning process in educational institutions has not been able to produce midwives who have knowledge of IUD counseling as expected.

Abstract

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a commonly overlooked problem in women, particularly women of post-menopausal age. Despite the medical, social, and hygiene burdens conferred by UI to its sufferers, past studies have shown that only a few among women afflicted with UI sought treatment. This may be due to various reasons: lack of knowledge and awareness of UI or a wrong belief of UI as a natural part of aging. This study aimed to investigate the association between knowledge and severity of UI and reasons for not seeking treatment among post-menopausal women in Bandung, Indonesia. This was an analytic cross-sectional study conducted at the Geriatric and Gynecology Clinic, Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, in September 2013. Ninety-one women who met the inclusion criteria were interviewed to assess their knowledge of UI. The severity of UI was assessed using Urinary Distress Inventory 6 (UDI-6). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Sixty-five respondents (70.7%) had poor knowledge of UI. Knowledge of UI was not associated with awareness of UI as a medical condition (p=0.633). The difference in UI severity was associated with the perception of UI as a normal part of aging (p=0.008). Post-menopausal women are poorly informed regarding urinary incontinence. However, knowledge alone might not be adequate to encourage women to seek treatment. Further studies are needed to investigate women’s reasons for not seeking treatment for UI.
