Abstract

Although the topic of progressive Muslims has received attention in several previous studies, research that specifically examines how such progressiveness is understood within the framework of the Islamic worldview remains limited. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of progressive Muslims, elaborate their basic conceptual foundations, and explain how progressiveness is understood through the lens of the Islamic worldview. A qualitative approach with a literature-based study design was employed, drawing on various primary and secondary sources from thinkers such as Al-Attas, Abdullah Saeed, and Omid Safi. Data were collected through documentation of books and scholarly journals and were analysed using a descriptive-analytical technique to critically examine the emerging concepts and arguments. The findings indicate that the characteristics of progressive Muslims include critical thinking, an orientation towards social justice, and openness to science and technology while remaining grounded in tauhid. These findings contribute to the development of Islamic worldview theory and broaden understanding of Islamic thought in the modern era. The study concludes that progressiveness can function as a bridge between tradition and modernity that must remain firmly rooted in revelation and the objectives of the law (maqaṣid al-shariʿah), and that it encourages Muslim scholars and educators to integrate modern scientific knowledge with the foundational values of Islam. The implications of this study include a theoretical contribution to enriching the literature on contemporary Islamic thought and practical implications for educational institutions in developing holistic curricula, while also opening avenues for further exploration of the application of progressive values in issues of digital ethics and bioethics.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the thoughts and contributions of KH. Imam Zarkasyi in the renewal of Islamic boarding school education in Indonesia. The method used in this study is a literature review, with a case study approach. Data were obtained from books, journals, proceedings, magazines, and scientific articles, and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques that include the stages of comparison, contrast, and critique. The study's results indicate that the renewal of Islamic boarding school education was initiated by KH. Imam Zarkasyi is based on four main aspects, namely the renewal of the structure and management of Islamic boarding school institutions based on waqf, the development of an integrative curriculum that combines religious knowledge and general knowledge in a balanced manner, the implementation of a modern and organized classical boarding school education system and method, and the formation of the mindset of students through the internalization of the Panca Jiwa Pondok values. In addition, this study found that the concepts of the hidden curriculum and 24-hour education implemented at the Darussalam Gontor Modern Islamic Boarding School contributed significantly to the formation of students' characters as independent, broad-minded, and oriented towards social service. The educational thoughts of KH. Imam Zarkasyi is a relevant model for developing modern Islamic boarding schools that remain rooted in Islamic values and are adaptable to the demands of changing times.

Abstract

This community service program aims to support junior high school science teachers across Pacitan Regency in developing instructional tools grounded in deep learning principles. The program adopted a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach implemented through systematic training and mentoring activities involving 74 science teachers. The activities were organized into two main sessions. The first session focused on enhancing teachers’ conceptual understanding and providing practical guidance in designing deep learning–oriented instructional tools. During this stage, participants developed initial drafts that emphasized higher-order thinking skills, inquiry-based learning strategies, and the integration of digital media. The second session consisted of collaborative evaluation and refinement of the drafts through feedback from facilitators and fellow participants. The evaluation process employed facilitator assessment instruments to examine the alignment of the instructional tools with deep learning principles, along with participant questionnaires to document teachers’ perceptions and learning experiences. Quantitative data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative feedback from facilitators and participants was examined to support the interpretation of the findings. As a result, each participant produced a finalized deep learning–based instructional tool tailored to the specific needs of their classroom context. The findings indicate that 95.67% of participants rated the program as very good, and 93.4% reported an increased understanding of deep learning concepts. To ensure the sustainability of the program outcomes, all finalized instructional tools will be compiled into a single volume and submitted for ISBN registration. Overall, this initiative enhanced teachers’ pedagogical and technological competencies and provides a replicable model of professional development for other science education contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the deeper meaning and uncover the important values contained in the Malangan Mask. This study uses Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic analysis. The Malangan Mask is not just part of a performance; it also helps express the culture and identity of the Malang people. However, with today's developments, its meaning has become less clear because the role of masks has changed and art is often used for business purposes. By using Ricoeur's method, which looks at how meaning emerges from the three steps of prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration, we can better understand the symbols, appearances, and stories that are part of the mask. This study uses qualitative methods, observing the visual form of the mask, how it is used in performances, and speaking with local artists and cultural experts. The findings of this study indicate that the Malangan Mask explains the relationship between stories and real life, and contains messages about living a balanced life, having wisdom, and Javanese beliefs. This perspective on masks shows that masks are not just beautiful objects, but a living part of culture that can change and be understood differently depending on the context.

Abstract

Slametan and spirituality through art serve as a means of communicating with God and the universe amid an unbalanced natural environment. This study discusses aesthetic expression and spirituality through a theocentric perspective in the Sedekah Gunung activity at Padepokan Tjipta Boedaja Tutup Ngisor, Magelang. This study uses qualitative methods with a fieldwork approach, including interviews, field observations, transcription, data processing, and systematic data compilation. The results show that the aesthetic and spiritual expressions of Sedekah Gunung are embedded in a theocentric perspective in the meditasi gerak solah bawa and the kidung tradisi Sedekah Gunung. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of a research model for aesthetic and spiritual expression in music and dance, grounded in theocentrism as a perspective. In practice, this research contributes to the discovery and explanation of aesthetic meaning through the kidung tradisi sedekah gunung and meditasi gerak (solah bawa).

Abstract

This study aims to develop the feasibility of digital literacy and environmental literacy assessment instruments for junior high school students on ecology and biodiversity material. The research method used is development research with stages of instrument grid compilation, expert validation, and empirical testing. The results of content validation showed an 86.25% feasibility percentage with a highly suitable category. Empirical testing included validity, reliability, and difficulty index tests on 14 essay questions. The validity test results showed 9 valid and 5 invalid questions, while the reliability test yielded a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.6537, indicating that the instrument's consistency was in the adequate category. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the assessment instrument developed is suitable for measuring students' digital literacy and environmental literacy at secondary school level and is relevant to the demands of 21st-century learning. This instrument is expected to support teachers in the evaluation of continuous science learning and serve as the basis for the systematic and continuous development of contextual literacy assessment in Indonesian junior high schools.
