Abstract

Translation is a process of transforming information from source representation to target representation. The translation process is described in four activities, such as unpacking the source, preliminary coordination, constructing the target, and determining equivalence. This study aims to analyze and describe the translation process of mathematical representations from verbal to symbolic in UM Mathematics S1 students in solving statistics on variance and standard deviation material. The instruments used were translation test questions and interview guidelines. Data analysis focused on four translation activities which were then categorized (high, medium, low). The results of the research percentage show that 78.58 percent of students experience difficulties in translating representations from verbal to symbolic in statistical problems. This is because students make mistakes in interpretation and implementation. While 21.42 percent of students succeeded in translating representations in solving the variance and standard deviation problems that have been presented. In terms of categorization, 21.42 percent of students belong to the high category, 39.29 percent of students belong to the medium category, and 39.29 percent of students belong to the low category. At this stage, the researcher obtained 28 student subjects for further analysis through 4 (four) stages of translation.

Abstract

Reflective thinking begins with repeated confusion and evaluation to solve a problem. There are four aspects to reflective thinking, namely techniques, monitoring, insight, and conceptualization. However, the problem-solvers’ reflective thinking characteristics in mathematical problems have not been discovered. The study describes the reflective thinking characteristics of proficient mathematics prospective teachers based on four aspects. The qualitative research was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta with a total of 64 reflective thinkers. Data collected by test, observation sheets, and interview methods. The tests were administered twice. The instruments developed has been through the validation process and declared valid. Data analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and verification. We successfully conclude that proficient mathematics prospective teachers have complete and consistent reflective thinking characteristics. Further research can be focused on the characteristics of reflective thinking based on another aspect.

Abstract

Proof constructing is the process of justifying a claim using the methods and concepts of proof to produce mathematical proof. Proof constructing is also an aspect of proof, and is often the only way to assess student performance. However, proof construction is still a constant problem (difficulty) for every student. The cause of this difficulty is not only because of the content of proof in textbooks/sources, over-reliance on examples, understanding, underlying logic, and the ability to use proof writing strategies, but also due to the lack of proof discussion activities that train students to understand and answer proof practice questions, give proof reasoning against the proof that has been constructed, and validating own and other colleagues' answers. Thus, this study aims to develop a valid and practical ACERA (Activities, Classroom Discussion, Exercises, Reason, and Audience) learning model and has a potential effect on students' ability to proof construction. This study uses research design research development methods in three stages, namely the preliminary stage, the model development stage and the assessment stage. The research subjects were 23 students of the Mathematics Education study program at the University of Mataram. The development of the ACERA model offers an alternative solution to reduce the difficulty of proof construction, thus enabling this model to have characteristics that are valid, practical and have a potential effect in increasing the productivity of student proof construction.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the theory and practice of constructivism in learning mathematics. This research is qualitative research using library research methods. Data was obtained by collecting various literature sources such as books, journals, and online research articles that are appropriate to the research problem. Data analysis in this study was carried out by content analysis. The research results show that teachers need to give students the freedom to experiment and provide relevant contexts for their theory development. In practice, teachers must consider that each student is unique and different in the way they understand and construct their knowledge. Therefore, teachers need to facilitate the learning process by considering the individual differences of students, ensuring that they have useful experiences and gain a deep understanding of the topics being taught.

Abstract

Adequate numeracy skills are essential, yet many students still face difficulties in solving numeracy problems. Previous studies have indicated that one of the challenges encountered by students relates to the representation of data or information in the problems to be solved. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore how students with various levels of numeracy skills address these obstacles in problem solving. The method used is descriptive with a qualitative approach, and data collection techniques include triangulation of test results and interviews. The research subjects are 30 eighth- grade students at one of the public junior high schools in Malang Regency. The results obtained show that students at a proficient level can represent data using mathematical expressions (creating patterns), capable students can represent data with words or written text, whereas students at the basic level still struggle with representing data due to difficulties in connecting available information, though they can read the charts presented. Students requiring special intervention are still unable to represent data from the graphs presented, and they also have difficulties in reading and finding information from graphs. Some students still struggle with writing mathematical arguments and reading information, and are not accustomed to contextual problems. Thus, it is advisable for teachers to familiarize students by providing numeracy problems, both PISA or AKM types
