Abstract

This study aims to identify the relationship between social media use and civic engagement among digital natives in Indonesia using the Grounded Theory method. The study involved 15 digital natives aged 18-24 who actively use social media, selected through a purposive sampling technique. The analysis in this study used NVivo version 12 Plus for MacBook. The study results show that social media use plays a vital role in the civic engagement of digital natives in Indonesia. The participants stated that social media use could help increase their awareness and knowledge about social and political issues in Indonesia and enable them to participate in related activities. In addition, the study also shows that social media use can facilitate interaction and discussion among individuals with different views, which ultimately can deepen their understanding and experience of social and political issues in Indonesia. However, this study also identifies some challenges and obstacles in using social media for civic engagement. One is the authenticity and credibility of information disseminated on social media, which can influence individuals' views and opinions on an issue. Based on these findings, this study recommends improving digital literacy and information verification skills for digital natives in Indonesia.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCivic Education in Indonesia has several goals, one of which is as primary education for the country's defense. Nevertheless, in practice, the Civic Education learning process in tertiary institutions has not yet found a formula that is in line with the concept of state defense education for civilians. This study intends to explain the role of Civic Education in the context of primary education in state defense in tertiary institutions. The mixed-method approach method with the dominant less dominant between interviews and surveys conducted to 400 students and eight lecturers. The data collection process was carried out on the students of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, who came from 10 (ten) different study programs. The study results illustrate that Civic Education in universities influences the values of defending the country with different ranges. The interview results confirmed that Civic Education can increase the love and motivation to defend the country but still at the level of thought in the form of knowledge, not at the level of action. Therefore, practice in primary education in state defense depends on the behavior of the students themselves. It implies that Civic Education as primary education for civilians' defense is a condition without meaning that does not affect civilians' actual behavior because it is still at the students' concepts and knowledge only.

Abstract

This paper explores the significant roles and influences in the development of responsible technology use and the impact of digital citizenship on the quality of learning within civic education. It begins by hypothesizing that universities play a pivotal role as the primary influencers in shaping an individual’s character towards responsible technology usage. The paper emphasizes the need for empirical evidence or authoritative references to substantiate this assertion, thereby highlighting the crucial role of universities in this context. The study then presents statistical evidence indicating a significant relationship between digital citizenship and learning quality in civic education, as highlighted by a t count (14,510) surpassing the t table (1.66) with a significance level of 0.000, lower than the 0.05 threshold. This finding necessitates the backing of its statistical analysis through credible academic sources. Lastly, the paper posits that enhancing digital citizenship will positively influence the quality of learning in civic education, suggesting that this claim should be supported by research or literature in the field. The paper underscores the need for well-supported arguments in discussing the role of university education, digital citizenship, and their impacts on learning quality.

Abstract

Community participation in social life is become social capital in the current era of globalization. Social capital, which consists of three main elements, namely: trust, norms and social networks, is an instrument that can be used to promote civic engagement. Islamic boarding schools (Pondok Pesantren) have these three elements which need to be analyzed further. This research adopted a qualitative method with a case study approach at the Pondok Buntet Pesantren in Cirebon Regency. The informants in this research were: Pesantren caregivers, ustadz-ustadzah, and students (santri). Analysis was carried out using the triangulation method. Research findings show that social capital plays a significant role in strengthening students' involvement as citizens. Elements of social capital, such as trust, norms, and social networks, are interrelated in encouraging citizen participation. It can be concluded that the development of social capital by students is the key to promoting civic engagement. However, this research only highlights three elements of social capital, so it is hoped that future research can explore other aspects of social capital that have not been covered in this research.

Abstract

The main focus of the research is how global citizenship interacts with social capital, especially elements of mutual trust and attachment to norms, in shaping the character of students amidst the impact of globalization. The research aims to understand how social capital strengthens attitudes of mutual trust and compliance with norms, as well as its contribution to the formation of adaptive and resilient students' character. A qualitative approach using the case study method was used to collect data through in-depth interviews, participant observation and document analysis at the Pondok Buntet Islamic Boarding School. Research findings show that social capital, especially beliefs and norms, plays an important role in shaping the character of students. The attitude of mutual trust between students and Islamic boarding school caregivers (trust) strengthens solidarity and social support, while compliance with Islamic boarding school norms (norms) helps students maintain moral integrity amidst the challenges of globalization. From this research, it is said to provide suggestions for Islamic boarding schools to emphasize the need to strengthen social capital to overcome the negative impacts of globalization and recommend development practices that strengthen beliefs and norms while still maintaining traditional values. Further research is recommended to explore other elements of social capital in educational contexts).
