Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of scouting extracurricular activities in strengthening students' social capital at Sekolah Rakyat Ancol. Social capital is understood as a resource formed through social interactions and manifested in the elements of trust, social values and norms, and social networks. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and documentation, the study reveals that scouting activities serve as an effective medium for building trust among students, instilling values of responsibility and discipline, and forming cross-grade and interschool social networks. Group-based and participatory activities in scouting encourage active student involvement, facilitate the natural internalization of norms, and strengthen social bonds. The findings confirm Coleman’s social capital theory and contribute to the development of character education based on school community practices. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on scouting activities in an alternative community school setting, which has received limited attention in educational and social capital literature.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have become a global agenda emphasizing the balance among the social, economic, and environmental pillars, with the governance pillar serving as a reinforcing element. This article aims to critically and comprehensively review the contribution of general education in the internalization of values and character formation as the social pillar of sustainable development. The method employed is a systematic literature review of various academic sources and relevant documents. The review findings indicate that quality education integrating values and character not only supports the achievement of education Goals (SDG 4) but also plays a strategic role in building an inclusive, just, and environmentally conscious society. General education that instills character traits such as mindfulness, curiosity, courage, resilience, ethics, and leadership serves as a crucial foundation in addressing global challenges and strengthening the social pillar of sustainable development. This review implies the need for the development of holistic and contextual curricula and teaching methods to realize a sustainable and just future in Indonesia. Thus, character education within general education can become a strategic instrument in supporting the success of sustainable development.

Abstract

Urban ecological crises demand a citizenship approach that goes beyond normative compliance and emphasizes citizens' ecological responsibility in public spaces. In Bandung City, the achievement of green open space (GOS) in 2020 reached only 12.25% of the total city area, far below the minimum requirement of 30%. This issue is not only structural but also cultural, as reflected in low citizen participation and the dominant perception of parks merely as recreational spaces. This article analyzes how Bandung City residents construct the functions of GOS parks and the role of Civic Education (PKn) in fostering ecological citizenship through citizen participation. The research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach, using field observation, in-depth interviews, and policy documentation. Data analysis was conducted through reduction, display, and verification. The research results indicate that citizens' social construction of GOS remains oriented toward social-recreational purposes and has not yet been fully internalized as an ecological obligation. The novelty of this research lies in conceptualizing GOS as a civic learning space that connects the social construction of public space with ecological citizenship within a Civic Education perspective. These findings strengthen the argument that strengthening Civic Education based on local GOS issues contributes significantly to the sustainability of city parks.

Abstract

The decline in students’ moral and spiritual values highlights the urgency of developing character education based on religious habituation. This study was motivated by the need to instill Islamic character values in elementary school students through meaningful and consistent routines. The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation and effectiveness of the Program Literasi Agama Islam (PLITA) or Islamic Religious Literacy Program at SDN 2 Giriwangi in shaping the religious character of fifth- and sixth-grade students. The PLITA program is conducted every Thursday through a series of activities, including the recitation of Asmaul Husna, reading short Qur’anic surahs, chanting Sholawat Nabi, short religious lectures, interactive discussions, and structured reflective assignments. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of PLITA activities. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing—with triangulation for validation. The results show that PLITA significantly contributes to improving students’ religious attitudes, discipline, responsibility, and spiritual awareness. Students became more engaged, polite, and active in religious practices, while teachers played a crucial role as role models and value reinforcers. The findings align with the theories of Habituation (Skinner), Social Learning (Bandura), and Character Education (Lickona), emphasising repetition, modelling, and internalisation of values. In conclusion, PLITA is an effective and innovative religious education model based on habituation and reflective literacy, fostering religious character and discipline among elementary students.

Abstract

This study aims to synthesize empirical evidence on the role of character strengths in strengthening student well-being in the digital era and to examine its implications for character education policy. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA framework, this study conducted identification, screening, and eligibility assessment processes, resulting in the inclusion of 26 peer-reviewed international articles published between 2011 and 2024 from Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC databases. Data were analyzed through thematic synthesis to identify dominant digital risks, character strengths associated with well-being, and their functional roles. The findings indicate that digital risks do not exert deterministic effects on student well-being; rather, their impact is conditional and shaped by students’ character strengths. Self-regulation, hope, gratitude, perseverance, and critical thinking consistently emerged as key strengths that function as direct predictors, moderators, and mediators of student well-being. These findings highlight the importance of reframing character education from a moral–normative orientation toward a strength-based and evidence-informed approach. The study concludes that strengthening student well-being in the digital era requires sustained educational investment in character strengths as preventive psychological capacities that support adaptive digital engagement and flourishing.

Abstract

This study proposes a conceptual framework of appreciative character based on music appreciation learning, placing appreciative character as the main outcome of the learning process. This character is believed to foster critical awareness and positive attitudes towards beauty, diversity, and differences in social life. This study uses a descriptive-conceptual literature review to construct the proposed framework by synthesizing theories on intolerance, character education, virtue ethics, aesthetics, and music appreciation learning. The resulting conceptual framework offers a new perspective in responding to contemporary challenges in music education by expanding its epistemological foundation to include moral (character) and social dimensions. Within this framework, music appreciation learning is understood as an effort to cultivate moral virtues through mesos habits that include attention, repetition, and recognition in the process of music appreciation; while intellectual virtues are developed through systematic engagement with musical knowledge, including music theory, history, counterpoint, harmony, orchestration, composition, and related academic fields.
