Abstract

Education in the era of globalization based on the existentialist view of Jean Paul Sartre is an education that prioritizes the freedom of teachers and students in learning. According to Jean Paul Sartre, humans are free creatures. But this freedom must be in accordance with the norms and can be accounted for. Education in the era of globalization has an important role in the formation of student identity, because in the era of globalization, all positive and negative information can be accessed easily, so every human being must be careful in acting. Teachers exist as role models who will become role models for their students both in the classroom and outside the classroom. Existing students are students who are active and creative in learning activities. Students are free to determine the interests and talents of students according to what they like, but this freedom will be the responsibility of students.

Abstract

Little is recognized regarding teachers’ beliefs about teaching with the appropriate framework integrating technology into language instruction, particularly during the COVID-19 outbreak. TPACK is a framework for apprehending knowledge domains required by EFL teachers nowadays. The preliminary study indicated that among the four English skills taught to middle school students, teaching writing was the most challenging. Therefore, it is essential to understand more about teachers’ beliefs regarding the practice of the TPACK framework in teaching writing. For that reason, This study aimed to (1) explore teachers' beliefs about the TPACK framework and (2) analyze classroom practices in teaching writing. This case study examined three teachers from different senior high schools in Indonesia of their beliefs about teaching writing with the TPACK framework and their classroom practices. A semi-structured interview was administered to explore their beliefs, while classroom observations focused on their classroom practices. The results demonstrated similarities and differences among teachers’ beliefs about learning objectives, teacher’s role, and assessment, while in classroom procedure and instructional material, teachers shared identical beliefs. Indeed, there was a majority of consistency between teachers’ beliefs and classroom practices of teaching writing with the TPACK framework. Despite its paramount consistency between teachers’ beliefs and classroom practices, the presence of the government to educate teachers is urgently needed, which can be in the form of virtual TPACK training. Then, this study may provide references for teaching writing with the TPACK framework that can adequately be applied during the COVID-19 outbreak and new normal.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims at investigating male and female students’ ‘uptake’ to the lecturer’s oral corrective feedback (OCF). This study used a qualitative method using a case study design. Thirty-nine students in the English Education Department participated in this study. They consisted of eleven male students and twenty-eight female students. All participants in this study were taking Survival Speaking class. The data were collected through observation of six hours of speaking classroom interaction. It was then analyzed through three stages: data condensation, data displays and drawing conclusion, and verification. The findings revealed that explicit correction is the most widely used and leads to the most amount of repair. The data obtained from the male students show that explicit correction leads to uptake with repair, whereas the four implicit feedback strategies i.e. clarification request, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, and repetition mostly lead to uptake with need-repair. Furthermore, the data obtained from the female students show that explicit correction, recast, and metalinguistic feedback mostly lead to uptake with repair, whereas clarification request, elicitation, and repetition mostly lead to uptake with need-repair. Hence, the results of this study will show us which type of oral corrective feedback induces successful feedback and uptake.

Abstract

Daily problems are often expressed in the form of math story problems. However, mathematics is often seen as scary because it is difficult to learn, causing errors in doing math story problems. The aims of this study is analyses the types of problem-solving errors in solving math story problems and analyses the factors that cause problem solving errors in solving math story problems. This research is a type of qualitative research with a case study approach. The subjects in this study were elementary school students in grade 5 with the object of research being student errors in answering math story questions. Data collection techniques using question answer sheets and interviews. The data analysis technique uses Miles and Huberman interactive data analysis techniques. The results showed that reading errors were 39%, comprehension errors were 81%, transformation errors were 88%, process skill errors as much as 90%, and writing errors in the final answer (encoding errors) as much as 90%. Cognitive factors that cause problem solving errors in math story problems are: memory weakness; the weakness of understanding; and weak analysis. The non-cognitive factors that cause problem-solving errors in math story problems are how students learn and how to teach teachers. Based on the results of the study, teachers need to improve students' abilities to reduce process skill errors and writing errors in the final answer.

Abstract

The need for preparing highly qualified teachers with all the quintessential pedagogical competencies has been acknowledged as a preeminent priority in the educational world. This present study is intended to scrutinize the EFL teachers’ perspectives and preferences in the 21st century pedagogical competence. The study was qualitatively conducted as a case study to retrieve a reputable understanding of the phenomenon. A semi-structured interview and a five-Likert scale questionnaire were used to collect the necessary data. The data of this study were taken from the purposively chosen informants regarding their familiarity and apprehension with the issue of this study. The results demonstrated that the teachers perceived the rapid development of technology and information as the key feature of the 21st-century learning, which is beneficial to furnish more comprehensive learning. Moreover, they predominantly conceived that the term 21st-century pedagogical competence focused on how teachers assimilate technology in the classroom and how to facilitate the students’ creativity due to the widely opened sources of information which positively affect students’ proficiency. It is suggested to consecutively provide more courses and training about confronting the 21st-century education to keep teachers voguish of any adjustments, innovations, and modifications in education.
