Abstract

Kemampuan menyusun scientific papers dari hasil penelitian merupakan salah satu kemampuan dasar yang harus dimiliki oleh mahasiswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan mahasiswa calon guru biologi dalam menyusun scientific papers hasil investigasi di laboratorium. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada mahasiswa calon guru biologi (n=15). Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa lembar observasi kemampuan membuat scientific papers dan pedoman wawancara. Adapun aspek yang dinilai dari kemampuan membuat scientific papers: mengonstruksi judul, membuat abstrak, menyusun pendahuluan, merancang metodologi penelitian, menyajikan hasil penelitian, menyajikan gambar yang ditampilkan, pembahasan dan kualitas sitasi yang digunakan di dalam scientific papers. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dalam membuat scientific papers masih rendah, hal tersebut dapat dilihat dari rata-rata persentase penguasaan kemampuan yang hanya 31%. Perlu ada upaya untuk mengembangkan kemampuan ini yang terintegrasi dengan program perkuliahan dalam upaya untuk mengembangkan kemampuan membuat scientific papers mahasiswa.The ability to construct a scientific papers from is one of the basic skills that must be owned by students. This study aims to determine the ability of prospective biology teacher in construct scientific papers of laboratory investigation. This research was conducted on prospective biology teacher (n = 15). The instrument used in this research is an observation sheet of the ability to construct a scientific papers. The aspects assessed from the ability to create a scientific papers are: ability to construct the title, to make an abstract, to prepare a preliminary, to design a research methodology, to present the results of research, to present the displayed images, the discussion and the quality of citation used in scientific papers. The results showed that the ability of students in construct scientific papers is still low, it can be seen from the average percentage of mastery skills that only 31%. There needs to be an effort to develop this capability that is integrated with the lecture program in an effort to develop students' scientific writing skills.

Abstract

This research departs from the many found misconceptions experienced by students in evolutionary lectures. So it is very important to make improvements. The efforts carried out in this study were to improve students' misconceptions through the use of Dual situated learning model as a model of change in conception based on the criteria considered to be very capable of correcting problems. The study was conducted at a public university in Bandung in the department of biology with 33 respondents as the subject of research. To find out the success of the activities carried out, data was taken using the Certainty of response index test. The results found are that there is a significant effect of Dual Situated Learning Model usage on the level of change in student misconception.

Abstract

Morfologi tumbuhan membahas tentang peformance tumbuhan, serta pemahaman terminologi (istilah-istilah ilmiah) dari organ-organ tumbuhan baik vegetatif maupun generatif. Pada kegiatan praktikum morfologi tumbuhan mahasiswa dituntut untuk mengamati dan merepresentasikan hasil pengamatannya secara visual dalam bentuk gambar dan secara verbal dalam bentuk deskripsi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan hubungan kemampuan representasi visual dan representasi verbal dalam kegiatan praktikum morfologi tumbuhan. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di salah satu perguruan tinggi negeri di Bandung Indonesia dengan 31 orang mahasiswa. Representasi visual dianalisis berdasarkan keautentikan gambar, kedetailan gambar, dan keterangan gambar. Kemampuan Representasi verbal dianalisis berdasarkan kejelasan dan kesesuaian deskripsi gambar dengan fakta, kelengkapan deskripsi gambar, dan terminologi. Hubungan  kemampuan representasi visual dan representasi verbal mahasiswa dianalisis menggunakan software SPSS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan representasi visual dan representasi verbal mahasiswa pada materi batang berkorelasi lemah (r 0,250 dan p 0,05), begitu juga dengan korelasi  kemampuan representasi visual dan representasi verbal  mahasiswa pada materi daun (r 0,284 dan p 0,05). Hal ini menunjukan bahwa kemampuan representasi visual objek makroskopik yang baik tidak selalu menggambarkan kemampuan representasi verbal objek makroskopik yang baik.

Abstract

Pembelajaran biologi harus mampu bertransformasi tidak hanya sekedar menjadikan konten biologi sebagai pengetahuan, akan tetapi mampu mengoptimalkan potensi dari konten tersebut untuk dimanfaatkan dalam kehidupan dunia nyata. Untuk mengakomodasi tujuan tersebut pembelajaran harus berorientasi pada masa yang akan datang secara berkelanjutan (lifelong learning). Oleh karenanya, pada makalah ini penulis mengkaji hasil penelitian tentang perkembangan lifelong learning mahasiswa, khususnya Habits of mind selama mengikuti perkuliahan Keanekaragaman Tumbuhan dengan program pembelajaran inkuiri berorientasi entrepreneurship. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada mahasiswa semester V Program Studi Pendidikan Biologi di salah satu LPTK di Jawa Tengah, dengan jumlah sampel 31 orang. Data dijaring dengan menggunakan kuesioner dan lembar observasi dalam bentuk rubrik Habits of mind yang diadaptasi dari framework lifelong learning Marzano. Ada delapan item pada rubrik tersebut yang merepresentasikan data tentang Habits of mind yang terdiri dari tiga aspek, yaitu: self regulation, critical thinking, dan creative thinking. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata Habits of mind mahasiswa mengalami perkembangan, yaitu data yang dihimpun sebelum diberikan program adalah 2,68; dan data setelah diberikan program adalah 3,28 dari skor total 4,00. Data tersebut diperkuat dengan hasil temuan pada kegiatan observasi selama proses pembelajaran. Secara rata-rata Habits of mind mahasiswa berdasarkan hasil observasi menunjukkan perkembangan pada setiap tahapnya, yaitu tahap I (2,23), tahap II (2,58), tahap III (3,18), dan tahap IV (3,55). Demikian juga dengan data perkembangan Habits of mind yang ditunjukkan pada setiap aspeknya, ketiga aspek menunjukkan perkembangan secara signifikan. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa program pembelajaran inkuiri berorientasi entrepreneurship yang diterapkan pada mata kuliah Keanekaragaman Tumbuhan dapat mengembangkan Habits of mind mahasiswa dengan baik.Keywords: habits of mind, inkuiri, entrepreneurship, keanekaragaman tumbuhan

Abstract

Now a days, students tend to learn the concept of evolution through various sources independently through memorizing or reading on their own and unaware of the mutual relations among them in everyday life. The tendency leads makes learning the concept of evolution becomes meaningless and not profound, even though there are many studies that states that scientific reasoning will make the knowledge gained more meaningful and profound. This study aims to test the hypothesis, is there whether any correlation between students' concept mastery levelwith students' scientific reasoning skills in the evolution learning process. A total of 33 students participated in this study. Students' reasoning skills are obtained through the use of Test of logical thinking (TOLT), while students' concept mastery of evolution was assessed using concept knowledge assessment. The results of this study indicate that there is a correlation between students' scientific reasoning skills and students' concept mastery, where the tendency is that students who think formally are more dominant in obtaining high scores or better concept mastery of the knowledge.

Abstract

Materi perkuliahan yang dipelajari dalam biologi sel meliputi struktur sel yang ultramikroskopis. Untuk mempermudah dalam mempelajarinya, maka banyak disajikan ilustrasi gambar. Kegiatan praktik seringkali mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam memperoleh dan memproses informasi berupa gambar. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengumpulkan informasi mengenai representasi mental (RM) mahasiswa yang dihasilkan saat membaca diagram struktur membran plasma. RM mahasiswa diukur setelah mengikuti pembelajaran biologi sel yang dilaksanakan dengan pendekatan VARK. Analisis RM dilakukan pada 31 orang mahasiswa Pendidikan Biologi semester 3 pada tahun akademik 2018/2019 yang mengikuti perkuliahan biologi sel di salah satu perguruan tinggi di Jakarta. Intrumen penelitian berupa lembar kerja yang merupakan modifikasi model pengukuran RM dengan Protokol CNET untuk mengukur RM. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pola dan kualitas RM yang berbeda untuk setiap siswa. Pola yang terbentuk didominasi oleh pola 2 kontrol umpan balik dengan satu pengukuran (38%). Adapun persentase skor RM untuk kategori sangat baik 29%, baik 19%, cukup 23%, kurang 10%, dan sangat kurang 19%.

Abstract

Xanthorrhizol is a compound that has many uses such as anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antihyperglycemic, antihypertensive, etc. However, this xanthorrhizol is only found in javanese turmeric (Curcuma zanthorrhiza) where this species only grows well in Indonesia. MatK from the GeneBank NCBI is used to find plants that are closely related to Curcuma zanthorrhiza. Multiple sequence alignment was done using ClustalX 1.83, and phylogenetic analysis was done using PAUP 4.0. The results of the reconstruction of the phylogenetic tree showed that white turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria) was the closest plant related to Curcuma zanthorrhiza. Curcuma zedoaria is a plant commonly found in tropical countries, such as India, Japan and Thailand. In Indonesia Curcuma zedoaria is known as Temu Putih. It is known that the chemical content of Temu Putih rhizome consists of curcuminoids, essential oils, and polysaccharides. Curcuminoid includes: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemetoksikurkumin and 1,7-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) -1,4,6-heptatrien-3-on.  Curcuma zedoaria has rich essential oils: starch, curcumin, arabin, gums, etc. There is also more than ten sesquiterpene from Rhizome of Curcuma zedoaria such as furanodiene, furanodienone, zedorone, curzerenone, curzeone, germacrone, 13-hydroxy germacrone, dihydro-curdione, curcumenone and zedoaronediol. Based on that Curcuma zedoaria doesn’t produce xanthorrhizol naturally, but Curcuma zedoaria has a bioactive substance such as sesquiterpene and its closely related to Curcuma zanthorrhiza, genetic engineering can probably be used to produce xanthorrhizol.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan penguasaan konsep siswa MA kelas X setelah digunakannya penugasan fenetik melalui lembar kerja siswa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah weak experiment dengan desain penelitian One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Data peningkatan penguasaan konsep siswa diperoleh melalui selisih atau gain skor posstest dan pretest, yang kemudian dihitung gain ternormalisasinya. Respon siswa dan guru tentang penggunaan penugasan fenetik melalui LKS dijaring melalui angket siswa dan wawancara guru. Sampel penelitian adalah kelas X-A di Madrasah Aliyah Darul Arqam Garut tahun pelajaran 2009/2010. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terdapat pengaruh penugasan fenetik melalui LKS terhadap penguasaan konsep pada keanekaragaman hayati yang diketahui dengan adanya peningkatan penguasaan konsep dengan nilai gain ternormalisasi 0,306 yang berkategori sedang.ABSTRACTThis study aims to determine the increase in students' mastery of concepts MA class X after using phenetic assignment through student worksheets. The research method used was weak study design experiment with OneGroup Pretest-Posttest Design. Data of the increasing students' mastery of concepts was obtained by difference or gain scores posstest and pretest, which was further calculated its normalized-gain. The response of students and teachers on phenetic assignment through worksheets were captured through student questionnaire and teacher interviews. The research sample was XA classes at Madrasah Aliyah Garut Darul Arqam school year 2009/2010. The results showed that there is an influence phenetic assignment through the mastery of concepts worksheets on biodiversity of seed plant as the increasing of concept’s mastery with normalized-gain value 0.306 , which is categorized as moderate.

Abstract

In learning biology, teachers often use visual media, such as diagrams, to help students understand the concept. This study was focused on how students’ mental representation (MR) when they read biological diagrams, either representation convention diagram or spatial isomorphism diagram. The student’s MR was analyzed using a worksheet modified from an MR measurement model of CNET protocol. This model involves three main components of the MR’s working memory: causal network, probability parameter, and utility parameter. Ninety 11th grade students of a senior high school in Bandung voluntarily involved in this study. Only 59 students, however, performed the worksheet completely. The result revealed that each student gave a different pattern of MR either when he/she read convention or spatial diagram. These differences could be traced since the student decides and orders the information elements and makes a causal network. Based on this result, we suggest that this method of MR analysis using a worksheet can be used to understand how student’s working memory works on MR building when they read a diagram. Understanding how the student can construct MR is a necessary platform to provide appropriate visual media that will help the student improve their learning achievement.

Abstract

Evolution is one of the main subjects of biology taught in science colleges. Unfortunately, students seem less attention to this subject. In the subject of evolution, the lesson commonly uses the animal as a model to improve the students understanding. The purpose of this study is to compare the ability of tree thinking students who use animals and plants as a model in the evolution lesson. Tree thinking refers to an approach to evolution that emphasizes reading and interpreting phylogenetic tree. This study involved 20 undergraduate students enrolled in the evolution course for biology majors at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). The tree thinking ability of students was measured using Tree Thinking Concept Inventory (TTCI) of Naegle with a little modification. In this test, we analyzed student preferences using animal or plant models using phylogenetic tree diagrams. Results showed that students’ TTCI score was higher when using animal models (65.42%) than plant models (55%). These results suggested that students remain to prefer animal models compare to plant models to study evolution. Nevertheless, the use of plants as models can be an alternative to learning evolution in the future.
