Abstract

The tradition of using medicinal plants in Waesano Village, Sanonggoang District, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, is still maintained to this day. They use various plants that grow wild in the 4,000-hectare Sesok forest to maintain their health. The nature of their treatment is preventive and curative. This research uses a qualitative method. Data analysis was carried out by applying the individual health belief model or healtf belief model in determining attitudes to do or not to perform health behaviors (Conner 2005). The model was developed by Rosenstock in 1950 to study and promote improved health care. The model consists of six constructs, namely perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action, and motivation related to individual motivation to always live a healthy life. The results of the study produced findings that a person's susceptibility to certain diseases encourages them to consume certain medicinal plants. Perceived susceptibility or vulnerability is defined as whether a person has a high risk of a disease. Perceived severity talks about an individual's beliefs about the seriousness or severity of a disease. Information regarding the severity of a disease comes from medical or physician and knowledge. Perceived benefits are related to a person's view of the value or usefulness of the new healthy behavior that they will do. People tend to adopt healthier behaviors when they believe that new behaviors can inhibit the progression of the disease. Regarding perceived benefits, the residents of Waesano Village until now continue to use a variety of medicinal plants to maintain their health because they have obtained many benefits or uses. This behavior is partly because the consumption of medicinal plants has been proven to be efficacious in overcoming many health problems that they experience. Many residents have proven the efficacy of medicinal plants based on empirical experience to overcome various diseases. Keywords: health belief model, local wisdom, health behavior

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the resilience of Cipaku's displaced communities through narrative communication, shedding light on the unique sociolinguistic dynamics of development-induced displacement. Anchored in the Communication Theory of Resilience (CTR), it delves into how displaced individuals employ communicative processes. The study focused on interviews with 12 individuals selected using snowball sampling technique from Cipaku Village who have lived through displacement more than 10 years due to forced migration, and supported with field observation to gain documentation in capturing their memories and subsequent positive adaptations. Data was analyzed using the NVivo 12 Plus software, which facilitated the organization, coding, and thematic analysis relevant to the study's objectives. The findings of this research delves into how displaced individuals employ communicative processes; crafting normalcy, affirming identity, maintaining networks, employing alternative logics, and foregrounding positive actions to navigate the upheavals of displacement. It highlights how displaced populations actively reconstruct their social realities, preserve cultural identities, and sustain community cohesion through narrative communication. This study also points to gaps in understanding the erosion of linguistic diversity within displaced communities and recommends further exploration of digital communication's role in sustaining displaced communities' communicative networks.

Abstract

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis were the fourth cause of disability in the world in 2020. Limitation of physical activity that occurred in elderly with osteoarthritis can affect the socio-economic aspects of the elderly, causing a decrease in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). In addition to osteoarthritis, recent studies have shown an association between history of hypertension, diabetes, and family support on quality of life in the elderly. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between physical factors, comorbid diseases, and psychological factors on the quality of life of the elderly with knee osteoarthritis. METHOD: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The samples were patients with knee OA who underwent therapy at the William Booth Hospital Semarang and the Diponegoro National Hospital that met the inclusion criteria. The research subjects were 61 respondents selected through consecutive sampling. The analysis test performed using the Chi-square method and logistic regression with p-value considered significant if p <0.05. The instrument used in this study was a demographic characteristic questionnaire, VAS, family APGAR, and OPQOL-35. RESULTS: There was a significant relationship in the assessment of the level of pain and family function on the quality of life of the elderly with knee OA (p = 0.003 and p = 0.042). Assessment of other physical factors consisting of gender (p = 0.637), duration of illness (p = 0.2), and degree of radiology (p = 0.532), as well as comorbid factors consisting of hypertension (p = 0.37) and diabetes (p = 0.663), showed an insignificant relationship to the quality of life of the elderly with knee OA. The dominant factor that affected the quality of life of the elderly with knee OA is the level of pain (p = 0.022) with OR value 14.1. CONCLUSION: Factors that affected the quality of life of the elderly with knee OA were the level of pain and family function. Key: knee OA, Quality of Life, Elderly

Abstract

Abstract

The treatment of TB faces many obstacles, both from the patient’s perspective and their environment. Therefore, the presence of TB survivors in the treatment process is expected to assist TB survivors during the recovery and post-recovery stages. Many approaches can be made to deal with TB, including the social and behavior change communication (SBCC) approach. This study aims to analyze the use of SBCC by TB survivors from the Terjang Foundation in treating TB in Bandung. This study adopts a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, field observations, and literature reviews. The study results show that SBCC has been implemented as follows: 1) Advocacy is carried out through meetings to seek support from the government and other stakeholders; 2) Social mobilization is carried out by involving stakeholders, including the Health Office, community elements, and TB survivors. Social mobilization is conducted through TB Day activities, seminars, and patient visits; 3) Education is carried out by explaining TB treatment to survivors and accompanying TB patients during drug administration in hospitals.

Abstract

Digital ICT plays a strategic role in transforming input-intensive to knowledge-intensive agriculture. Its use has close relations to the farmers’ characteristics. This study aims to analyze the farmers’ characteristics and the intensity of utilizing various digital ICT applications/platforms. The survey was conducted on 150 smartphone-using farmers from Boyolali District, Central Java Province, Indonesia, accompanied by interviews and online observations. This research identifies digital divides and inequalities in leveraging Android farming applications, Facebook groups of farmers, WAG of farmers’ groups, Internet/Google information resources and YouTube. The correlation test indicated a significant correlation between gender, age, education, farming land area, farm income, internet quota budget, the availability of PC/Laptop (besides smartphones), and participation in farmers’ group with the intensity of leveraging some digital ICT applications. These correlations are unique and reflect farmers’ receptions and preferences for using digital ICT applications. This novelty is crucial for the development of knowledge-intensive agriculture that emphasizes the strategic role of development communication to facilitate knowledge sharing, involvement, and capacity development among farmers. Without understanding farmers’ characteristics and vulnerabilities, digital divide and inequality among farmers will continue to be reproduced.

Abstract

In 2020, Bandung city ranked second in West Java for tuberculosis (TB) cases. The city government and stakeholders have taken health education, early detection, free treatment, and surveillance measures to address TB. Yet, a comprehensive approach is still needed. Despite previous studies exploring TB management, the role of religious approaches still needs to be explored. Employing a qualitative approach through a case study method, this research involves data collection through observation, in-depth interviews, and literature reviews. Participants are TB healthcare workers and religious speakers in Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Bandung city. In 2020, Bandung reported 8,504 TB cases with increased detection success. ‘Aisyiyah TB Care uses a religious approach to offer emotional and spiritual support to patients facing physical challenges, emotional burdens, and stigma. Religious perspectives introduce spiritual support via Islamic teachings emphasizing hygiene and self-care. Interviews reveal changed patient perceptions due to the religious approach. ‘Aisyiyah addresses TB complexity and stigma, conducting educational efforts to reshape perceptions. The religious approach assists TB sufferers, aiming for positive influence, improved relationships, and fostering hope, gratitude, and trust in God. Collaborative efforts among health, religious, and government organizations are essential for effective TB management. The research highlights the positive impact of ‘Aisyiyah TB Care's religious approach on management, addressing stigma, and enhancing well-being. Improved information dissemination and support are vital, particularly in areas with high TB burdens.
