Abstract

Implementation of the social assistance policy program to determine social assistance recipients in the context of development communication involves stakeholder action in the sensemaking process as an effort to achieve a common understanding in determining who is worthy of receiving social assistance. Previous research stated that the problems that still occur today are weak communication and coordination between institutions, distribution of social assistance that does not match targets, unclear distribution mechanisms and data on social assistance recipients that are not in sync, lack of integration of one Indonesian data, misidentification, and neglect of groups. vulnerable, deceased social assistance recipients are still registered, identity of social assistance recipients is not registered in DTKS or SIKS-NG, problematic social assistance recipients are still registered, NIK is invalid, inactive social assistance recipients still receive assistance, multiple social assistance recipients. The aim of this research is to understand the sensemaking process used by stakeholders in determining potential social assistance recipients. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative using a constructivist paradigm and case study design. The research results show the important role of identity construction of local leaders, especially village heads, in data management and distribution of social assistance. Through a reflective and participatory approach, local leaders can ensure the accuracy and honesty of data on social assistance recipients, as well as increase the overall effectiveness of the social assistance program. Abstract

Many studies on rice landrace (Oryza sativa sbsp. indica) have been conducted by biodiversity, ethnobotany, and agroecology disciplines. The importance of rice landraces as genetic resources and the basics of human civilizations. Conservation landraces in Tumbang Datu and Pongbembe nowadays are affected by the following socio-cultural constraints: a) decline numbers of local varieties after the regional government-imposed funding to local communities to substitute new-high yield varieties, b) rice rites and landrace conservation are on the brink of extinction. This research explores daily behaviors that contribute to rice landrace conservations through the sociological approach of collective memory and symbolic interaction. Today’s generations use new meanings and symbols of rice derived from collective memories and virtues. Various interviewees practice mnemonic devices (what, why, who, where, when, and how) that reflect foodways. According to Blumer, social structures are networks of interdependence among actors that place conditions on their actions. In these networks, people act and produce symbols and meanings of rice to interpret their situations and to have their own set in a localized process of social interpretation. Moreover, the Toraja language is used as a bridge in communicating the past, present, and future to strengthening collective identity. This research uses a qualitative method to explore rice landrace conservation using open-ended questions, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions. A free-listing method was followed to gather interviewees’ collective memories of rice landraces. Findings show that a combination of methods, tradition-based conservation, and current scientific-technology-based conservation become a practice for promoting, educating, and stimulating the public and researchers to engage in landraces conservation. These findings suggest that the socio-cultural ecosystem and Blumer’s social network support new networks to deliver science in agricultural innovation policy. The results showed that collective memories and foodways create ways that would benefit rice landrace conservation the most.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the conditions and problems faced by the people in South Central Timor (TTS) Regency, especially those who do people's weaving businesses and to analyze the development communication that occurs in the weaving group assisted by the Trade, Industry and MSME Office of TTS Regency. This study uses a qualitative method with an interpretive approach. Furthermore, the author conducted direct interviews with a group of people's weaving craftsmen under the auspices of the Department of Trade, Industry, Cooperatives and SMEs in TTS Regency. This study found that development communication in an area has not led to empowerment. On the other hand, power dynamics between parents and young people will continue to be a feature of a society. Therefore, development communication must be carried out to facilitate different local cultural communication structures, in order to encourage empowerment not only for parents but also for the younger generation.

Abstract

Family communication is needed to build a strong bonding between the adolescents and their parents. This study aimed to analyze the relationship of characteristics of the adolescent and family to adolescent’s communication patterns with father and mother. Respondents were grade of 2nd high school students in Bogor City as many as 372 students aged 15-18 years old. Communication patterns were measured by five dimensions that are the topic, duration, frequency, media, and situation of communication. Data were analyzed by independent sample t-test and Pearson correlation. The results showed that there were differences in communication between boys and girls with their father and mother. Adolescents were more open and more often communicate with mother than father, both boys and girls. Other findings showed a significant negative correlation between the age of the fathers and the topic of conversation of adolescents-fathers (r=-0,126, p=0,015). In addition, there was a very significant negative correlation between birth order of adolescent with the topic of conversation of adolescents-mothers (r=-0,174, p=0,001) and communication media (r=-0,140, p=0,007). Abstract

The people of Waesano Village, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, practice a tradition known as taing hang empo, meaning 'to give, eat, and grandmother' in Manggarai. This ritual involves feeding the spirits of deceased ancestors, rooted in their belief in ancestral spirits, ata pali sina. This qualitative study utilizes ethnographic communication methods to explore the taing hang empo ritual and its significance in the village, drawing on Creswell's perspective of qualitative research as a practice to interpret the world. Employing Carey's concept of ritual communication, this research delves into the communication patterns during taing hang empo, highlighting shared cultural participation, the sacredness of activities, symbolic language use, and the conveyance of messages through unique communication symbols. Data collection involved in-depth interviews and observations, particularly during nemba bongot, an epidemic affecting villagers and livestock. During such crises, the community seeks assistance from ancestral spirits, triggering ritual communication resembling a sacred ceremony. This study illuminates non-professional, belief-based rituals, depicting micro-scale practices related to specific beliefs or religions. Post-ritual, ancestral spirits reportedly communicate medicinal plant remedies for the sick through dreams. This research offers insight into the role of ritual communication and its impact on addressing communal challenges in the village.
