Abstract

Peran kelembagaan serta pemanfaatan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi dapat mendukung strategi penghidupan nelayan kecilTitle: Poverty and Livelihood Strategy of Small-Scale Fishers in Tanjung Kait, BantenSmall-scale fishers are community that is often seen as a poor community. The causes of poverty of the small-scale fishers are multidimensional, not only due to ecological factors, the unequal control of livelihood assets can be used in understanding poverty in small-scale fishers. Most of small-scale fishers are still trapped in poverty, but there are a small number of small-scale fishers who managed to get out of poverty trap. This study aims to analyse the poverty of small-scale fishers and its causes and livelihood strategies of small-scale fisher households to get out poverty. The research uses a sustainable livelihood approach.  The research was conducted in January until June 2022 in Tanjung Kait District, Tangerang Regency, Banten. The method used in this research was mixed methods with sequential exploratory strategy. Data collection techniques are in-depth interview and survey to fishing vessel owners and fishing vessel crews. The data analysis method used is interactive analysis mode for qualitative data and descriptive analysis for quantitative data. The result showed that poverty in small-scale fisher households are not permanent and only occurs during the lean season. Ownership of assets in the mode of production determines the economic obtained by small-scale fishers. At the household level, disparities in access and differences in the managing of livelihood assets determine the poverty of small-scale fishers. Several small-scale fisher households with livelihood strategies through job diversification by good management of livelihood assets can get out of the poverty trap. Institutional roles and the use of information and communication technology can support the livelihood strategies of small-scale fishers.

Abstract

The treatment of TB faces many obstacles, both from the patient’s perspective and their environment. Therefore, the presence of TB survivors in the treatment process is expected to assist TB survivors during the recovery and post-recovery stages. Many approaches can be made to deal with TB, including the social and behavior change communication (SBCC) approach. This study aims to analyze the use of SBCC by TB survivors from the Terjang Foundation in treating TB in Bandung. This study adopts a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, field observations, and literature reviews. The study results show that SBCC has been implemented as follows: 1) Advocacy is carried out through meetings to seek support from the government and other stakeholders; 2) Social mobilization is carried out by involving stakeholders, including the Health Office, community elements, and TB survivors. Social mobilization is conducted through TB Day activities, seminars, and patient visits; 3) Education is carried out by explaining TB treatment to survivors and accompanying TB patients during drug administration in hospitals.

Abstract

A social movement is becoming a phenomenon along with development. Most of the social movements relate to environmental issues. River management issues among downstream communities have been increasingly raised as the problems of the river arise. This study aims to identify the social movement of downstream communities for the Ciliwung River and to analyze the communication development model of Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih (GCB) for downstream Ciliwung communities. This study used mixed methods, conducting a survey supported by interviews and observation. The results of the study found that the downstream communities have a different focus on Ciliwung social movement. It depends on the characteristics of the geography and their communities. Secondly, the communication development model of downstream communities mostly focuses on networking development as this influence most public participation in environmental actions. The study recommends collaboration between downstream and upstream communities as the issues of the Ciliwung River cannot be overcome partially between upstream and downstream areas. Finally, networking development as the communication model of the communities has to be combined with the city, capacity development, and organizing communities.

Abstract

Online learning demands specific teacher preparation, particularly in the effective utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) innovations tailored to the unique needs and capabilities of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study focused on the ICT innovations adopted by educators at the London School Beyond Academy (LSBA), a vocational school catering to autistic students in Jakarta, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 8 main informants who are educators were selected by snowbowling sampling. Data collection involved multiple methods, including in-depth interviews, observations, and literature reviews. Documentation included archiving interview recordings, interview transcripts, and observation notes. The data analysis technique was carried out by adopting the conceptual framework of "School Improvement" (Huberman & Miles, 1984). The findings revealed that the adoption of technological innovations at LSBA is a collaborative effort involving school administrators, educators, and academics, all of whom work together to tailor the use of ICT to the unique abilities of each ASD student. During the assessment of new students, psychologists and educators encountered challenges in conducting online observations. Consequently, this circumstance necessitated adjustments to the learning system to accommodate the diverse abilities of ASD students.

Abstract

The tradition of using medicinal plants in Waesano Village, Sanonggoang District, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, is still maintained to this day. They use various plants that grow wild in the 4,000-hectare Sesok forest to maintain their health. The nature of their treatment is preventive and curative. This research uses a qualitative method. Data analysis was carried out by applying the individual health belief model or healtf belief model in determining attitudes to do or not to perform health behaviors (Conner 2005). The model was developed by Rosenstock in 1950 to study and promote improved health care. The model consists of six constructs, namely perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action, and motivation related to individual motivation to always live a healthy life. The results of the study produced findings that a person's susceptibility to certain diseases encourages them to consume certain medicinal plants. Perceived susceptibility or vulnerability is defined as whether a person has a high risk of a disease. Perceived severity talks about an individual's beliefs about the seriousness or severity of a disease. Information regarding the severity of a disease comes from medical or physician and knowledge. Perceived benefits are related to a person's view of the value or usefulness of the new healthy behavior that they will do. People tend to adopt healthier behaviors when they believe that new behaviors can inhibit the progression of the disease. Regarding perceived benefits, the residents of Waesano Village until now continue to use a variety of medicinal plants to maintain their health because they have obtained many benefits or uses. This behavior is partly because the consumption of medicinal plants has been proven to be efficacious in overcoming many health problems that they experience. Many residents have proven the efficacy of medicinal plants based on empirical experience to overcome various diseases. Keywords: health belief model, local wisdom, health behavior

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the resilience of Cipaku's displaced communities through narrative communication, shedding light on the unique sociolinguistic dynamics of development-induced displacement. Anchored in the Communication Theory of Resilience (CTR), it delves into how displaced individuals employ communicative processes. The study focused on interviews with 12 individuals selected using snowball sampling technique from Cipaku Village who have lived through displacement more than 10 years due to forced migration, and supported with field observation to gain documentation in capturing their memories and subsequent positive adaptations. Data was analyzed using the NVivo 12 Plus software, which facilitated the organization, coding, and thematic analysis relevant to the study's objectives. The findings of this research delves into how displaced individuals employ communicative processes; crafting normalcy, affirming identity, maintaining networks, employing alternative logics, and foregrounding positive actions to navigate the upheavals of displacement. It highlights how displaced populations actively reconstruct their social realities, preserve cultural identities, and sustain community cohesion through narrative communication. This study also points to gaps in understanding the erosion of linguistic diversity within displaced communities and recommends further exploration of digital communication's role in sustaining displaced communities' communicative networks.
