Abstract

This study aims to explore the development of BER in Indonesia from 2014-2023 on the Scopus database. Current studies illustrate that the number of publications on biology education has increased in recent years. This trend is likely to continue, as evidenced by the increasing number of publications. A total of 253 papers from the Scopus database were analyzed using VOSviewer software. These findings reveal that BER in Indonesia has grown rapidly in recent years. Zubaidah is the most prolific author, and Universitas Negeri Malang is a leading institution in the progress of BER. The most studied research topics in the last three years are education computing, learning systems, learning processes, and e-learning. The learning topics are plants (botany), animals, biotechnology, and genetics. We also highlight that many topics still get less attention, such as technology-based learning in biochemistry, algae, and protists. We hope this study can illustrate the current status of BER, so that it can help to map the direction of future research in Indonesia.

Abstract

[Title: Higher Order Thinking Skills Assessment]. At present, the scope of transformation seems endless, from cars that park themselves without drivers to the production of cars on location through 3D printing. The wearable technology is controlled by the human mind. The coming era of individuals who can face the complexities of life are individuals who have competencies that cannot be replaced by robots, such as empathy, inspiring skills, and higher-order thinking skills. Severe challenges for education to prepare students to become workers who can adapt to new tasks and processes can be overcome by practising higher-order thinking skills. Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) can be trained in schools through the application of constructivist-based learning models. In education, interrelated models, goals, and assessments are called triangle education anchors. Thus, if you want to learn objectives to achieve higher-order thinking skills, then the implementation of learning (models) and their measurement (assessment) must be managed to achieve these goals.

Abstract

Global health questionnaire-12 (GHQ12) is the most common instrument used to measure mental health. However, the factor structure of the GHQ12 has not been fully explored. This study aims to assess the factorial structure of the GHQ12 and explore demographic factors associated with mental wellbeing in a population of prospective biology teachers in Indonesia. This cross-sectional survey was conducted for two weeks in July 2023 by recruiting 1186 students who were predominantly female (85.92%), over 20 years old (68.79%), only studying without working (90.47%), and third year (33.81%). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to extract and assess the suitability of the resulting models. GHQ12 scores were also reviewed concerning demographic characteristics using comparison tests. Two factors including depression and social dysfunction accounted for 58.78% of the variance. This two-factor model was confirmed to fit the actual data. Additionally, we found differences between men and women on both factors and total scores. In addition, there are differences between students who only study and those who work on depression factors. This study suggests that the factor structure of the GHQ12 is a valid and reliable measurement for evaluating the mental health of prospective biology teachers.

Abstract

Several bibliometric studies have been conducted to see the progress of Biology Learning Media (BLM), but these researches still provide a broad scope in evaluating the development of BLM. This study aims to provide a holistic overview of the trends in the use of BLM in Indonesia during 2018-2023 on the Scopus database. The method used is bibliometric analysis by identifying and analyzing the growth patterns of literature, authors, institutions, and keywords related to BLM development. The research procedure consisted of investigation, reduction, compilation, and interpretation. A total of 43 articles were analyzed using VOSviewer software to visualize bibliometric mapping. For the last five years, BLM-related publications peaked in 2019 with 13 articles. Universitas Negeri Malang is a foremost institution in BLM development. The most widely used BLM are android-based media, interactive multimedia, and website-based media. Ecology is the most widely taught learning topic, while cognitive (knowledge) is the most frequently measured learning outcome. We highlighted a paradigm change in the use of more massive Technology-based learning media. In the future, we suggest exploring various research topics in biology learning such as protists, genetics, or microbiology that can empower literacy as a primary topic in more innovative and dynamic learning.

Abstract

Communication skills are one of the abilities required for 21st-century learning. Students must consider communication skills in learning because they can guide students in conveying ideas effectively and interacting and collaborating with others. This study aimed to investigate the online reading-concept mapping-reciprocal teaching (REMAP-RT) learning model on students' oral and writing communication skills. The pretest-posttest control group design was employed in this study with three Biology Education study program classes at the State Islamic University in Tulungagung, Indonesia. This study included 89 students separated into three classrooms, each learning using one of three methods: i) REMAP-RT, ii) reciprocal teaching (RT), and iii) discussion-presentation. A questionnaire was used to assess students' oral and written communication skills. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to compare differences in communication skills among the three treatment groups based on the questionnaire responses. The research findings revealed that students' oral and writing communication abilities improved across the board, with students in the REMAP-RT class showing the most substantial increase. This result of the research suggests that REMAP-RT improves students' oral and written communication skills in online learning.

Abstract

Science and technology are rapidly developing in the 21st century which requires educators to facilitate real-life problem-based learning activities and the application of science that can stimulate problem-solving skills with science considerations. This research aims to determine the correlation of science literacy and concept understanding with students' problem solving skills and variables that are more influential in improving problem solving skills. The research sample consisted of 34 students of eleventh class of State Senior High School (SSHS) 6 of Malang who took Biology as an elective subjects. The variables measured in this study, namely predictor variables (science literacy and concept understanding), and criterion variables (problem solving skills). The data of the three variables were obtained from an essay test at the end of the lesson and then analyzed using multiple linear regression test. The results showed that the predictor variables (science literacy and concept mastery) gave a relative contribution to problem solving skills with a percentage of 72.1% and 27.9%, respectively. Science literacy variable is more influential on improving problem solving skills than concept mastery. The results of this study indicate a positive correlation between science literacy and concept understanding with problem solving skills.
