Abstract

One of the plant families that are widely used as medicinal plants is Zingiberaceae. This study aims to determine the use of Zingiberaceae as traditional medicine. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method with an ethical and emic approach. There are 7 families of Zingiberaceae that are used by the Dayak Jangkang tribe, namely bongah (Curcuma domesticaValeton), bongah raya hitam (Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb), bongah raya kunyit (Curcuma amada Roxb), bongah raya putih (Curcuma zedoaria Roxb), longkas (Alpinia galangal (L.) Willd), loyak joronang (Zingiberofficinale Roscoe), tabau (Kaempferia galanga L). The part used as medicine is the rhizome. Simple processing methods include mashing, boiling, drinking, mashing and smearing. The community of the Dayak Jangkang tribe uses family plants Zingiberaceae for traditional medicine hereditary. Basically, the society knows the use as medicine without knowing the chemical composition of plants Zingiberaceae family, but the community believe that its use as medicine still has to match the dose in order to get cure a disease.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are relevant skills in the contemporary industrial 4.0 era. The current study aimed to investigate the correlation between critical thinking and representation skills and the extent to which the two variables are related. This study was conducted at UNDIKMA and UNW Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia between March and August 2020. It involved 62 students from the Department of Biology Education. The research data were gathered using essay questions on Plant Physiology. Data analysis was performed using the Pearson correlation test, followed by a simple linear regression analysis. The statistical analysis showed a correlation between critical thinking and representation skills among biology students (r = 0.948, p < 0.001, N = 62). The correlation was positive with regression equation Y = 12.122 + 0.835x. Therefore, educators are advised to promote critical thinking in the classroom to support student representation skills.

Abstract

The development of information technology encourages innovation in the world of education, including in the development of electronic-based learning resources. However, developing electronic encyclopedias based on the diversity of fauna in Indonesia still needs improvement. This research aims to develop an electronic encyclopedia about bird diversity as a source of learning biology. According to the Lee and Owens developing model, this research uses five steps of the developing process. In the final step, the evaluation involved 37 Biology Education Department students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang with a pretest-posttest group design. Data collection uses validation sheets, pretest-posttest questions, and questionnaires. Pretest and posttest data were analyzed using a gain score to measure its effectiveness in improving student learning outcomes. The effectiveness test results for each indicator item show that the average score for all aspects shows a percentage of 94.7% (very practical). Furthermore, the gain score is 0.47, which indicates that the encyclopedia is feasible, valid, and effective in improving students' cognitive learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a computer-based interactive Genetics project guide e-book to enhance undergraduate biology students’ cognitive learning outcomes. This development was carried out because there had been no available written guidebook for the Genetics project, which resulted in non-optimum project implementation. The content in the e-book consists of a description of material related to Drosophila melanogaster, descriptions and videos of general procedures, PjBL-based learning activities, and quizzes. Lee and Owen’s development model was used in this study which consisted of 4 stages, (1) multimedia need assessment and analysis; (2) multimedia instructional design; (3) multimedia development and implementation; and (4) multimedia evaluation. Before being implemented, the e-book was validated by material experts, learning media experts, and Genetics lecture. The effectiveness of the e-book in enhancing cognitive learning outcomes was measured using the ANCOVA test. The results of the e-book effectiveness test showed a significant difference between the control and experimental classes. These results indicate that the computer-based interactive e-book is valid, practical, and effective for use in the learning process of the Genetics project.

Abstract

Genetic literacy is essential for promoting health and well-being in modern society. Although its importance is increasingly recognised, the definition and crucial dimension to construct a conceptual model are unclear, limiting the possibilities for measurement and comparison intervention. The study aims to review definitions and the conceptual models of genetics literacy and develop a new comprehensive definition and conceptual model based on the discovered dimensions that are relevant in the post-genomic era. We performed a systematic literature review using the Crossref, PubMed, and Scopus databases with Publish or Perish software. An automated content analysis was conducted to identify and develop conceptual model genetics literacy using NVivo 12 software. The review resulted in 10 definitions and 12 conceptual models. Automated content analysis showed that genetic literacy is defined as the ability of an individual to comprehend, use, correlate, assess, and propose genetic information to make arguments, reason, and decide on genetic issues in maintaining or improving the quality of personal and social well-being. Genetic literacy was conceptualised as a set of knowledge, a set of skills or interconnected. The conceptual model of genetics literacy covers two dimensions. i) Knowledge dimension: conceptual (nature of genetic material, transmission, genetic expression, genetic regulation, genetic determinism, genetic technology); sociocultural; epistemic. ii) Skills dimension: argumentation, informal reasoning, and decision-making skills. This definition and conceptual model can serve as a basis for developing interventions and measurements to support regulating, preventing, as well as promoting health and well-being.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the problems of Asesmen Nasional in elementary schools. The type of research used in this study is qualitative descriptive research. This study uses analytical techniques from Miles, and explains Huberman which consists of Data Collection; Data Reduction; Data View; and drawing conclusions/verifications. The results showed that: (1) Problems first arise in schools when the distribution or announcement of the names of students who must take literacy and numeracy tests is submitted to the school. (2) The second problem is that students when the AKM numeracy literacy test is carried out, learning is still running with the fifty-fifty model (50-50), (3) The last problem that arises is when the implementation of taking the test in the Computer Laboratory.  Furthermore, the design of solutions when implementing the Asesmen Nasional of fifth grader, including: (1) the efforts made by the next teacher are to provide literacy and numeracy materials in the form of books and questions that have been given when students are of fourth grader. (2) Regarding students' difficulties with literacy questions whose reading is too long and understanding numeracy questions that require a high level of thinking, the teacher provides guidance as long as the students conduct trials and do the practice questions. (3) The next effort made by the teacher is to provide literacy and numeracy materials in the form of books and questions that have been given when students as fourth grader. (3) Furthermore, the last problem that arises in schools is the occurrence of an error system  and having to re-login. This can be anticipated with the teacher's instructions to record the results of the answers that have been done.
