Abstract

ABSTRACT Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often exhibit self-stimulation behaviors (stimming), such as repetitive movements, sounds, or actions, which can disrupt therapy sessions and social interactions. These behaviors can impede the development of social skills and focus. Given the importance of non-invasive interventions, modifying play-based activities such as LEGO and maze games (LEMA) has been explored as a potential method to reduce stimming behaviors. (LEMA) game on reducing self-stimulation (stimming) behaviors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The research employed an A-B-A design, including a baseline phase (A1), an intervention phase (B), and a post-intervention phase (A2), conducted over 12 sessions. Two children, RFQ and HG, both of whom exhibited frequent stimming behaviors, were selected as participants. The intensity of their stimming behaviors was measured before and after the intervention using observational data. The data were analyzed using visual analysis to identify changes in the frequency and intensity of stimming behaviors across phases. Additionally, percentage of non-overlapping data (PND) was calculated to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention data. The findings showed that stimming behaviors in both children, which originally lasted approximately 390 seconds during the baseline phase (A1), significantly decreased during the intervention phase (B), with durations reduced to 48-55 seconds. After the intervention was stopped, stimming behaviors remained reduced in the post-intervention baseline phase (A2), indicating the effectiveness of the LEMA game in reducing these behaviors. Modifying the LEGO and Maze (LEMA) game effectively reduced self-stimulation behaviors in children with ASD. The results align with previous studies suggesting that structured play interventions, like LEGO and maze activities, can enhance focus and reduce repetitive behaviors in children with ASD.

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are common among older adults, especially those residing in nursing homes, and can significantly affect their quality of life and overall well-being. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as guided imagery and virtual reality (VR), have shown promise in improving sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing cognitive arousal. The SI-VIGUR (Virtual Reality Guided Imagery) app combines VR technology with guided imagery to offer a therapeutic solution for improving sleep in older adults. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the SI-VIGUR VR app in improving sleep quality among older adults in nursing homes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Virtual Reality Guided Imagery (SI-VIGUR) application in improving sleep quality among older adults in nursing homes in Palembang City, South Sumatra, Indonesia, in 2024. Using a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-tests, 80 participants aged 60 or older with sleep disturbances were selected. They received 15-minute SI-VIGUR sessions three times a week for 1 months. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Participants in the experimental group showed a significant improvement in sleep quality, as evidenced by a decrease in their PSQI scores (from 14.20 ± 1.86 to 7.31 ± 2.81). The intervention group demonstrated a marked reduction in poor sleep quality, with a higher percentage of individuals reporting fair or good sleep quality after the intervention compared to before. These findings were statistically significant (p = 0.0001), confirming the effectiveness of the SI-VIGUR app. The SI-VIGUR VR app proved to be an effective non-pharmacological intervention for improving sleep quality among older adults in nursing homes. The results suggest that VR-guided imagery can significantly reduce sleep disturbances, offering a promising solution for enhancing the well-being of older adults in institutional settings.

Abstract

Current development of membrane technology for purifying polluted water and wastewater is discussed in this review in accordance with its hybrid application with other types of water treatment methods such as adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and biological activated sludge. This hybrid implementation aims are to lengthen membrane lifespan and elude severe fouling on the surface and pore of the membrane. Membrane material and fabrication technology were concisely included. Two prominent materials to fabricate membrane namely polymeric and ceramic are reviewed well along with the exploration of biopolymers based-materials such as starch and alginate. Several fabrication methods available to be implemented in research or industrial large scale including interfacial polymerization technique, non-solvent induced phase separation, temperature induced phase separation, electrospinning, and sintering are deliberately discussed. The next section includes fouling analysis involving reliable fouling mechanism namely Hermias models to help with the explanation of fouling occurrence during filtration. These models covers four different mechanisms namely complete blocking, standard blocking, intermediate blocking, and cake filtration models. Ultimately, recent research reporting the outcome of the hybridization of membrane and adsorption, biosorption, coagulation-flocculation, AOPs, and biological treatment using microorganism were properly reviewed. Overall, this review considerably promotes the findings of those works which mostly revealed positive outcome of the hybrid membrane system contributing to stronger foundation for future research.

Abstract

Inorganic fertilizers are often used by Indonesian people because their impacts are quickly visible. However, recently the negative impacts have begun to be felt, so many have switched to organic fertilizers. To support this transition, the production of organic fertilizers is important. Telkom University has a green house that produces compost from daily leaf waste. However, the compost production process is still manual and less ergonomic, causing workers to be at risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). This study aims to design a packaging aid using the Ergonomic Function Deployment (EFD) method, so that the tool is in accordance with ergonomic principles and increases production efficiency. The result is the design of a screw conveyor machine, work table, and chair. This aid has succeeded in reducing the Rapid Upper Limb Analysis (RULA) value from 6 to 2, and accelerating the packaging filling time from 55 seconds to 4 seconds.
