Abstract

Indonesia, as a multicultural country with a wide diversity of cultures, religions, and ethnicities, emphasizes the importance of promoting inclusivity and preserving local identity through education. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of multicultural themes and representations of West Javanese cultural contexts in 1,000 books donated by the National Library to 10,000 community reading parks in 2024. This study is a qualitative descriptive study using the content analysis method. The population in this study was books obtained from Librarians at the National Library, while the sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, which came from 1000 books with a multicultural context and representation of the West Java cultural context. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques were carried out using content analysis. The results showed that 35.19% of the books evaluated discussed multicultural themes. This theme was more common at the intermediate and advanced reader levels (B3 and C) than at the beginner level (A). Books specifically themed around West Java only represented 4.81% of the collection, highlighting the limitations of local cultural narratives. This study concludes that there is great potential to strengthen regional identity, foster pride in cultural heritage, and provide insight into traditional values through the provision of books on cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of stylistics and rhetoric in the representation of social criticism in pre-1900 and post-1900 French poetry. The novelty of this research lies in its theoretical integration, which explicitly combines the concepts of stylistics, Aristotelian classical rhetoric, and Fairclough's model of Critical Discourse Analysis as the primary analytical framework to uncover issues of inequality, humanity, and social reality. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this study compares the aesthetic characteristics of both eras. Pre-1900 poetry is examined based on its emphasis on fixed forms, classical language, and tradition, whereas post-1900 poetry is analyzed through the aspects of freedom of expression, rejection of traditional conventions, subjectivity, ambiguity, and wordplay. The data sources for this research consist of ten pre-1900 poems and ten post-1900 poems. Data collection was conducted by documenting the dominant linguistic styles and their rhetorical functions in representing social criticism, with the researcher serving as the primary instrument. The results indicate that pre-1900 poetry tends to utilize symbolic and metaphorical styles with implicit rhetorical functions. Conversely, post-1900 poetry prominently features direct, repetitive, and confrontational styles. These differences demonstrate that stylistic and rhetorical tendencies in poetry reflect the aesthetic and ideological characteristics of each literary period. Theoretically, this study offers a specific contribution in the form of a new interdisciplinary approach model, proving that the integration of stylistics, classical rhetoric, and Critical Discourse Analysis is effective in distinguishing the shifting ways social criticism is represented across different periods of French literature.

Abstract

Objective: This descriptive quantitative study examined the reading interest profile of fourth-grade students at SDIT Insan Rabbani, Majalengka Regency, Indonesia, as a needs analysis for developing culturally responsive digital storybooks. The study aimed to identify students' reading interest across five indicators adapted from Burns and Lowe to provide an empirical basis for literacy-oriented instructional media. Method: The study involved all 34 fourth-grade students using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire measuring five indicators of reading interest: (1) need for reading materials, (2) efforts to seek reading materials, (3) enjoyment of reading, (4) desire to read continuously, and (5) follow-up actions after reading. The questionnaire was validated through expert judgment (CVI = 0.94) and demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.89). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics by calculating the mean score for each indicator. Results: The findings revealed a moderate-to-low and uneven reading interest profile. The highest mean score was obtained for the need for reading materials (75.42), while the lowest score was found for the desire to read continuously (65.36). Lower scores were also identified for efforts to seek reading materials (68.68) and follow-up actions after reading (68.17), indicating that students recognised the importance of reading but had not yet developed consistent, autonomous, and reflective reading habits. Novelty: This study contributes by providing an empirical reading interest profile that serves as a foundation for developing culturally responsive digital storybooks incorporating local wisdom, including local folklore, Sundanese cultural values, audio narration, interactive illustrations, vocabulary support, comprehension activities, and post-reading retelling tasks to enhance literacy engagement among elementary school students.

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital era, the need for effective, accessible, and technologically relevant learning media is increasingly demanding. Accordingly, this study aims to design and develop a web-based Initiation à la Littérature Française learning media using Canva and to provide information on the results of product feasibility in terms of materials and media. The method applied was Research and Development (R&D) with the PPE (Planning, Production, Evaluation) development model. In the data processing phase, this study conducted a validation test by two assessors—material expert judgement and media expert judgement based on the aspects developed by Nesbit & Li, 2009, LORI 2.0. The results reveal that from the material aspect, this learning media is very feasible to use, with a feasibility percentage of 86.1%, whilst from the media aspect, this product has a perfect feasibility of 100%. The finding implies that the web-based Initiation à la Littérature Française learning media using Canva is remarkably feasible.
