Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate how a course design approach based on explorative research involving systems thinking can be implemented by recovering Rare Earth Elements (REEs) using Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES). The method used in this research is Design-Based Research (DBR). The instruments used were questions regarding the measurement of leaching samples from results/characterization, short questions about concept maps, and student response questionnaires. Data from measurements of leaching samples was measured using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), data about concept maps was measured by the number of component and process concepts in the context of electronic waste recycling that students were able to identify, and student response data was measured using a Likert scale. Based on the research results, recovery of REEs can be done using DES. It can be shown by a shift in the peak vibration of 497.65 cm-1 from the sample before leaching to a vibration of 449.43 cm-1 after leaching. In addition, this study yields new insights into the perceptions of future pre-service chemistry teachers regarding the possibility of new types of DES in the context of chemistry learning. According to pre-service chemistry teachers, recovering REEs from electronic waste and applying DES are interesting as a new context for laboratory learning. Context-based design of research activities can enhance system thinking and interest in chemistry. The results of study showed increased student’s systems thinking abilities, as shown by the component and process concepts that emerged from the pre-test by 652 concepts while the post-test increased by 1208 concepts.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to identify students' preconceptions about rare earth coordination chemistry. The method used in this research is exploratory interviews. This research involved 25 pre-service chemistry teacher at a university in West Java Province, Indonesia. The collected data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The research results showed that 60% of students were able to identify electronic waste as a source of valuable metals, but others did not know that there were rare earth metals contained in it. As many as 32% know ionic liquids as environmentally friendly solvents, but the majority of students do not understand the physicochemical properties of ionic liquids and the interactions between ionic liquids and rare earth metals. As many as 8% of students were able to explain the reaction to form rare earth metal coordination compounds correctly, while only 4% were able to explain the concept of luminescence in these compounds. These findings indicate the need for coordination chemistry course design that accommodates students' learning needs and links them to relevant environmental contexts to improve students' understanding and systems thinking skills.

Abstract

Developing students’ creativity and environmental awareness is essential in sustainability-oriented science education. Integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) with a Place-Based Education (PBE) framework offers a promising approach by connecting classroom learning with real-world environmental contexts. This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a pretest–posttest control group. The sample consisted of 74 junior high school students in Bogor, Indonesia, including 35 students in the control group and 39 students in the experimental group. The experimental group received PjBL integrated with PBE, while the control group implemented PjBL without a place-based framework. Data were collected using creative thinking tests, environmental awareness questionnaires, observation sheets, and response questionnaires from students, teachers, and community members. Instrument validity and reliability were confirmed through preliminary testing. The results indicated that the PjBL–PBE model was highly implementable and effective. Students’ creative thinking skills in the experimental group showed a higher improvement (N-Gain = 56.18%) compared to the control group. Environmental awareness also increased substantially in the experimental group (67.15%), while the control group showed only a modest improvement (13.62%). Stakeholder responses demonstrated strong support for the learning model (91.60%). These findings suggest that integrating PjBL with a place-based framework effectively enhances students’ creative thinking and environmental awareness in renewable energy education.

Abstract

Climate change has become a serious threat to all humans, with impacts already being felt throughout the planet. One effort in climate change education is to improve students' climate literacy and climate change awareness. This study aimed to measure climate literacy and climate change awareness among vocational high school students and analyze the relationship between aspects of these two variables. A questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale was used, and the data were processed using descriptive statistics and Pearson ’scorrelation analysis. The results from 295 respondents showed that the average climate literacy was in the high category (3.50), while climate change awareness was in the medium category (3.40). However, both showed significant gaps in each aspect. The results of the correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between attitudes and behavior, both in climate literacy (r = 0.323) and climate change awareness (r = 0.142). Climate change education not only conveys information in the form of knowledge but also includes efforts to strengthen attitudes that can encourage sustainable climate-friendly behavior. The results of this study will serve as the basis for developing climate change teaching materials in vocational high schools to improve students' climate literacy and climate change awareness.
