Abstract

The long-term objective of this research is to produce valid, practical, and effective textbooks for courses in international program of mathematics education of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. For the short-term, this research aims to produce valid and practical textbook for number theory course. The validity was based on the relevancy towards the students’ expected competence, while the practicality was measured from the implementation of learning using the textbook. This research used design research with the type of development studies. It followed four steps, i.e. (1) preliminary research, (2) prototyping stage, (3) summative evaluation, and (4) systemic reflection and documentation. In the preliminary research, we analyzed the need of the textbook in the international program and found that the textbook of number theory course is very needed. In the prototyping stage, we wrote the textbook based on the need analysis. The prototype was then discussed with expert and revised in the stage of summative evaluation and applied to the lecture meetings. The result was the final product of the textbook used for the stage of systemic reflection and documentation when we wrote all the results according to the preset research framework. Finally, the developed number theory textbook is valid and practical.

Abstract

Low-ability students are evidenced to have difficulties in understanding the concept of abstraction in mathematics, such as social arithmetic problems. It is because low-ability students have an IQ below the average of 70 to 90. Most teachers find it challenging to discover what kind of learning approaches that may be suitable for improving their mathematical understanding. An alternative approach that can be used to improve the understanding of low-ability students is the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (IRME) approach by using real contexts as a starting point for learning to make it easier for students to study the abstract material. This study aims to determine the learning process and the role of IRME in improving low-ability student’s mathematical cognitive abilities regarding the concept of social arithmetic. This study used the Single Subject Research (SSR) method with a single subject, and a seventh-grade student at one of the Junior High Schools in Depok, Yogyakarta. The research data collected in this study are audio and video recordings, photos, and student worksheets. The data collected was then analyzed using in and between analysis with A-B research design. The results showed that the IRME approach with snack and money con-texts could improve a low-ability student’s mathematical understanding of the social arithmetic concept. This context could be a starting point for teachers in teaching social arithmetic problems and be a reference for finding other contexts that can make mathematics learning more easy and joyful for low-ability students.

Abstract

Instructional materials are one of the essential parts to support the learning process becomes more exciting and meaningful. However, teachers do not yet give more attention to these parts, so that the learning process becomes uninteresting and boring. Therefore, this research aims to produce the instructional materials for the logical thinking of mathematics ability based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education for junior high school students for Grade 8, which is valid and practical. This research used a design research method with the type of development study conducted in two stages, namely preliminary design and formative evaluation, including self-evaluation, prototyping (expert reviews, one-to-one, and small groups) field tests the research conducted at junior high school. For research subjects, students of class VIII B of junior high school are 29 students. The techniques of data collection used are documentation, walkthrough, interviews, and test. The research data are quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. The results of data analysis known that this research produces the logical thinking of mathematics for instructional materials based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education on the content of linear equations of two variables that are valid, practical, and have potential effects. In this case, mathematics instructional materials in students' worksheets based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education have been content valid, constructive, and language from expert validation at the expert review stage. In contrast, the mathematics student worksheets based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education have been practically obtained from revisions results of one-to-one and small group. Furthermore, the prototype of instructional materials in the form of student worksheets has potential effects to improve the logical thinking of mathematics ability for students.

Abstract

Geometry is one of the essential mathematics materials, such as square and rectangle. However, most elementary school students experience difficulty in understanding it due to the abstractness of the geometric material. Furthermore, teachers teaching in the remote areas of Indonesia still encounter problems exploring this abstract material to make students understand caused by the limited learning resources. On the other hand, students in remote areas are familiar with traditional games, such as Macanan. Hence, the objective of this study is to design learning activities utilizing Macanan game in assisting students understand the concept of the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles for fourth-grade students. A design research approach was implemented and performed at one of the elementary schools in Jambi, Indonesia. The research results presented that Macanan could be a context for a starting point in this learning design of both square and rectangular learning. Employing this context, it would be fun, enjoyable, and easy to understand the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles for students. This game could be a context for teachers in remote areas in teaching geometry and be a reference for identifying other contexts which can make mathematics learning easy in remote areas.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look at the role of using Mathematics GASING (Math GASING) to help students understand and master the addition concept from the informal level (concrete) to the formal level. The research method used is design research with a preliminary design, teaching experiments, and retrospective analysis stages. This study describes how the Math GASING made a real contribution for students understanding of the concept of addition. The whole strategy and model that requires students to discover, to describe, and to discuss during the construction phase demonstrates how students can use their initial understanding of the addition concept. The stages in the learning trajectory have an important role in understanding the addition concept from informal level to formal level and also make the study of mathematics more easy, fun, and enjoyable.

Abstract

Kata kunci: Berpikir Kritis; Introvert; Single Subject Research; Problem-based Learning [English]: The research aimed to analyze how introvert student learn Phytagoras topic and the result of learning intervention using problem-based learning (PBL) on the student's mathematical critical thinking ability. Descriptive quantitative research with single subject design was used to achieve the aims of the research. The subject was an introvert student of grade VIII. Data was collected through test, observation, and interview. Data analysis was based on two major conditions during the research, i.e. within-conditions and inter-conditions. Within-condition analysis included interval length, direction tendency, stability level, rate of change, data trace, and range. Meanwhile, inter-condition analysis comprised the number of variables changed, changes in direction and effect trends, changes in stability and its effects, changes in data levels, and overlap data. The research showed that PBL has a significant role during the learning process since it supports the subject to be active in solving the contextual problems. In this case, the mathematical critical thinking ability can be developed and improved. Keywords: Critical Thinking; Introvert; Single Subject Research; Problem-based Learning
