Abstract

EnglishBoyolali Regency is the largest milk-producer in Central Java Province. There are many market institutions serving the farmers in selling their products. Interaction between the dairy-cow farmers and market institutions incurs transaction costs. The farmers’ efforts to reduce risk of milk quality deterioration and to search market institutions create transaction costs resulting in profit reduction. Objective of this study is to analyze the transaction costs paid by the dairy-cow farmers. Transaction cost was computed using an accounting approach and its determinants were evaluated using a regression method. Primary data were collected through a survey conducted in Cepogo District, Boyolaly Regency, during April-May 2016 from 104 farmer respondents. The results showed that average transaction cost was Rp47,44/liter. Total monthly transaction costs paid by the village cooperative (KUD) members were Rp31.955, consisted of searching cost (Rp1.059 or 3.31%), negotiation cost (Rp724 or 2.27%), and enforcement cost (Rp30.173 or 94.42%). Total monthly transaction costs paid by the non-KUD members were Rp48.012 per month, consisted of Rp2.825 (5.88%), Rp1.204 (2.51%), and Rp43.983 (91,61%) for searching cost, negotiation cost, and enforcement cost, respectively. Transaction cost paid by the KUD members were lower than that paid by non-KUD members. Roles of cooperative in reducing transaction costs were not determined by membership status, but by its real services as reflected in increasing the number of cows per farm, shorter distance of the cooling unit to the farms and information provision to all members.

Abstract

EnglishDemand for rice as Indonesian main food staple continues increasing along with the population growth. Currently, most of rice production is still supported by use of chemical fertilizers not environmentally friendly. Government through the Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 40/2007 recommends organic fertilizer application to improve soil condition and fertility as well as to increase inorganic fertilizer efficiency. One of the organic fertilizers which has been widely applied by farmers is Beka-Pomi fertilizer, a package consisting of Beka decomposer and Pomi organic fertilizers. This research aims to analyze Beta-Pomi customers segmentation, customer satisfaction level, and the main factors affecting farmers’ satisfaction as the fertilizer users. Primary data were collected through random survey of 180 paddy farmers using the fertilizer in Central Java, West Kalimantan, and Lampung Provinces in February-June 2016. The data were analyzed using the descriptive, IPA, CHAID, and CSI methods. Results of analysis indicated that the fertilizer users were dominated by farmers of productive age group (76%), Jajar Legowo and Haston planting pattern (90%), with educational level from primary to secondary schools (91%), agriculture as side job (73%), and land tenure less than 1 hectare (61%). Most farmers satisfied with the Beka-Pomi fertilizer performance (CSI = 80.22%). The main determinants of the satisfaction were land area, planting pattern, educational level, product opinion, farmers’ activities, farmers’ interest, absence of side effects, ability to produce paddy above 10 tonnes/hectare and quick response from the officers. To increase Beka-Pomi sales, it is necessary to improve facilities and field officers’ qualities, decrease product price, and appreciate the farmers applying the fertilizer.

Abstract

Rubber is the main commodity of Jambi Province. In the rubber market, price volatilites at exporter level are not followed by price volatilities at farmer level. Generally the objectives of this research was to analyze the marketing system of rubber smallholders with structure-conduct-performance (SCP) approachment. The research was conducted on two district of rubber production centers in Jambi province from June to August 2013. The method used in this research is survey method with interview techniques. The research results show that market concentration ratio (CR4) at crumb rubber factory level is 75.70%. These structural characteristics indicate that market structure is concentrated with low competition level. Hence, market structure of rubber is oligopolistic and the main marketing intitution determining rubber prices is crumb rubber factory. Market conduct analysis states that marketing collution occurs crumb rubber factories determine the price. In addition, the market performance analysis shows that changes of rubber prices at the crumb rubber factory level are not transmitted to farmers. The result analysis of market performance indicates that farmers are the most disadvantages actors comparing with other marketing actors and they are also price taker in the short run and long run.

Abstract

Fluctuations in Indonesian Robusta coffee exports occurred along with a declining trend in coffee exports compared to major competitor countries over the past fifteen years.  This research aimed to analyze the dynamics of the competitiveness of Indonesian Robusta coffee exports and the level of competition among the major competitor countries such as Vietnam and India. The methods used are Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Dynamic Revealed Comparative Advantage (DRCA), and Rank Spearman Correlation. These methods were selected to analyze changes in competition level within 15 years’ time dimension (2000–2015) as well as to analyze the relationships among competing countries, which may affect Robusta coffee market of each country. The analysis showed that Indonesia's coffee competitiveness tends to increase compared to the two major competitors of Robusta coffee exporter of the world such as Vietnam and India. However, Indonesia's coffee competitiveness is still a half below Vietnam. The Indonesian coffee rivalry against Vietnam and India is not significantly correlated due to the different markets of export destination countries.  Increasing competitiveness and the strength of competition in export market can be done through quality improvement and continuity of domestic Robusta coffee in accordance to the demand of world consumers.

Abstract

Identification of potential areas in an agricultural sector is needed in order to meet the national food needs, among others, by carrying out mapping the potential areas through clustering the Kabupaten-Kota in Indonesia, especially on imported agricultural commodities of food crops and horticultures. The use of cluster analysis with top-down clustering method (K-means) produces the best cluster. Of 268 regencies-cities, there are 7 clusters, namely Cluster 1 consisting of 154 regencies, Cluster 2 consisting of 2 regencies, Cluster 3 consisting of only1 regency, Cluster 4 consisting of 8 regencies, Cluster 5 consisting of 24 regencies, Cluster 6 consisting of 75 regencies, and Cluster 7 consisting of 4 regencies. Each cluster has its own dominant commodity characteristics.  The results of typology klassen on constructed clusters show that food crop and horticulture commodities have grown well and fast. Out of 13 commodities, there are 7 major commodities: Cluster 1: rice and corns; Clusters 2, 3 and 7: cassava; Cluster 4: corns, cassavas and chilly; Cluster 5: apples; Cluster 6: corns, shallots, and garlic. Six other commodities do not grow well, namely sorghum, potatoes, soybeans, peanuts, oranges, and grapes. The potential lack of an area is due to the plants’ low productivity, which is mainly because of plant pests, highly operational cost, climates and natural disasters. Keywords: imports, food crops, horticulture, cluster, and leading sector.

Abstract

In 2015, total imports of corn in Indonesia reached 3.1 million tons due to lower corn production of Indonesia. One way to overcome this is to apply the technology mechanization in the cultivation process as practiced by the country largest corn producer in the world. The purpose of this study is to know the level of competitiveness of mechanized corn cultivation and manual. In addition, it is to determine the effect of government policy on competitiveness of both type of corn cultivation. The analytical method used is the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM). The analysis showed that mechanized corn cultivation is competitive so that the business is feasible to be developed.  It is seen from the DRC and PCR- corn agribusiness based on mechanization level values that less than one is 0.54 and 0.50. The manual corn  cultivation, however, only show a competitive advantage but does not have a comparative advantage. Output policy is a policy that better influence both   type mechanized and manual corn cultivation. Keywords: competitiveness, corn, Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM)

Abstract

The partnership between the farmers and PT Galih Estetika Indonesia as the exporter company in the field of sweet potato processing is expected to support the development of sweet potato agribusiness in Kuningan Regency and become one of the solutions for farmers’ problems. Termination of partnership contracts undertaken by the farmers will have an impact on the implementation of partnerships, company operations as well as the value chain. This study aims to analyze the pattern of partnership, degree of partnership, value chain structure, value chain governance, farmers’ income (partner and non-partner) and margin. The method of data processing and data analysis used the descriptive analysis qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the pattern of partnership that is formed is a centralized pattern with the degree value of partnership of 716 (madya pattern). The structure of the value chain by mapping the actors and their activities result in relationships and coordination between the parties. Farmers with companies belong to the modular type in VCG. Economic benefits indicate that net income of partner farmers is Rp22,157,828/Ha, while non-partner farmers obtain Rp12,306,789/Ha and the smallest margin is obtained by the coordinator. The analysis shows that farmers' incomes are larger, but partnership planning has not been ideal. Therefore, the roles of farmers, companies and related agencies are required in the running of the ideal sweet potato partnership program. Keywords: sweet potato partnership, partnership pattern, value chain, value chain governance, revenue
