Abstract

Folktales have been a medium through which children can transfer knowledge, language, and cultural values at an early age. The existence of folktales cannot be separated from the values prevalent in society. Numerous moral principles are sound for life. As literary works for learning, folktales should introduce gender roles. However, some local cultures and ideologies can represent the role of gender in some areas. Therefore, this study investigates the gender stereotypes in the five most popular Indonesian folktales: Roro Jonggrang, Timun Mas, The Legend of Malin Kundang, The Origin of Lake Toba, and Bawang Merah Bawang Putih. These stories were chosen because they are the most searchable folktales online and are the most used as learning materials in Indonesian school textbooks: English for Nusantara and When English Rings a Bell. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) analyzes the relationship between discourse language and other semiotic cues. The results revealed two aspects of each character's social and domestic roles. The male characters dominate the stories, where male characters are depicted as people who work, travel, and fight. In contrast, female characters are depicted as housewives who do all the housework. This showed a patriarchal culture is involved in the stories, which impacts the portrayal of men and women in society. Therefore, gender construction in these five most popular folktales is needed as they are used as learning materials to teach values to young learners.

Abstract

This study evaluates the school’s policies to implement literacy education at an elementary school during the disruptive moment of global pandemic of covid-19 and social disparity of underprivileged community. Since the global pandemic has hit Indonesia in 2020, it had major impacts on the teaching and learning process across the country, causing some disruption of the educational strategies by the school principals. The purpose of this study is to analyze the policies implemented by the school management in implementing the culture of literacy and numeracy especially during the pandemic. This ethnographic study included one private community-based elementary school in a slump area. The results of this study are that the school had specific policies in order to accommodate the literacy and numeracy practice during the pandemic according to the condition of the community but with least coommunity participation. The policies at the elementary schools dominantly focus on numeracy in the learning process instead of encouraging the literacy practice. The implementation of literacy education at an elementary school in the slump area should have required community participation in order to revitalize its social position to empower the community.

Abstract

Reflective skill is a component of 21st century learning and one of the main keys to become a professional teacher. However, pre-service teachers often have difficulty in reflecting their teaching and learning. Thus, this study aims to describe the reflective thinking abilities of pre-service English teachers in implementing their teaching practice. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. The research subjects in this study were 12 pre-service English teachers. The instruments used were observation of documents and interviews. The results indicate that pre-service English teachers tend to practice four reflective thinking skills that are reflection as retrospective analysis (ability to self-assess), reflection as a problem-solving process (awareness of how one learns), critical self-reflection (developing continuous self-improvement), and reflection on self-confidence. The most dominant reflective skill practiced is reflection as a problem-solving process. Meanwhile, testing internal consistency on problem solution become a difficult aspect to be fulfilled by the pre-service teachers. In brief, it is recommended that pre-service teachers should have more opportunity to practice their reflective thinking skills during the teaching and learning process in order to produce professional graduates who have high competitiveness and ability to face the challenges in the world of education.

Abstract

One of the global problems that often occurs in society is environmental pollution, one of which is water pollution. The impact of water pollution is in the form of ecosystem damage and decreased water quality. One of nature's efforts to prevent environmental pollution in waters is by having bioindicators in waters, one of which is microalgae. However, if the community is less sensitive to environmental sustainability, environmental pollution will continue to occur. Therefore, public awareness is needed to protect the environment, one way is to foster an attitude of environmental concern among high school students by creating teaching materials related to the environment. To make it easier for students to understand and use the teaching materials, teaching materials were made in the form of PBL-based electronic modules that integrate materials related to microalgae and water quality to improve the environmental concern of class X high school students in a valid, practical and effective manner. The subjects used in this study were four classes of class X students of SMAN 12 Makassar. The instrument used in this study was an environmental concern attitude questionnaire that had been validated by experts. The results of this study can be categorized as valid, practical and effective because the validity results obtained 100% from the material expert validator, 92.2% from media and teaching materials experts, and 89.3 from biology education practitioners. While for the practicality test, there are 3 categories, namely, for individual tests the results were 86.58%, small group tests of 87.42%, and field tests of 87.44%. The effectiveness test is divided into 5 tests, namely, normality test, homogeneity test, N gain test, T test and ANCOVA test, where all tests obtained the results of the electronic module effectively used as teaching materials for class X of high school. This shows that the electronic module has an influence on the environmental care attitude of high school students in class X.
