Abstract

This experiment was conducted to improve the protein retention through carbohydrate efficiency in the chromium diet of common carp Cyprinus carpio. Four experimental diets with isonitrogen and isocaloric but different Cr+3 level 0,00; 1,33; 2,23 and 3,96 ppm were used in this experiment. Fish with body weight of 5,31 ± 0,02 gram were reared in aquaria (50 x 40 x 35 cm); 20 fish per aquarium. Fish fed upon the experimental diets three times daily, at satiation for 50 days. Results of this experiment showed that the protein retention could be improved by given Cr+3 in the diet. Based on the respon curve of protein retention (Yi = -1.1678X2 + 3,7223X + 24,818 ; R2 = 0,9) it was found that the optimum Cr*J in the diet was 1,59 ppm. The maximum relative growth rate was found at 2,16 ppm Cr3+ (Y2 = -14,592 X: + 63,18IX + 426,43 ; R = 0,9). The feed efficiency and the survival rate of the fish are the same between treatment (p>0.05). The protein level of the fish from treatment 3,96 ppm Cr+3 was lower than the others; the lipid level of Cr+3 diets was higher than that of non Cr+3 diet; however the carbohydrate level of fish from diet 2,23 Cr+3 was lower than the others. It was concluded that the optimum level of Cr +3 in the diet of common carp was 1,59-2,16 ppm Key words : dietary chromium, common carp, Cyprinus carpio   ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan retensi protein dan pertumbuhan ikan mas Cyprinus carpio melalui peningkatan efisiensi karbohidrat pakan yang diberi kromium (Cr"3).

Abstract

Aquaculture activity including culture of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is now facing on high price of feed.  Feed cost can reach more than 50% of production cost so that increase in feed price decreases in farmer benefit. Toward increasing in benefit, it needs efficiency on production cost.  This can be achieved by using a diet containing suitable protein and protein-energy ratio for the need of fish cultured.  Diet containing different protein levels (28% and 31%) and protein-energy ratios (8 and 10), and a commercial feed as a control were compared to determine protein content and protein-energy ratio suitable for common carp fingerlings.  The results showed that food efficiency was differed among the treatments, while relative growth rate was similar.  Diet containing protein of 31.15% with protein-energy ratio of 7.81, and protein of 28.08% with protein-energy ratio of 9.12 were resulting higher food efficiency compared to that of diet containing 31.15% protein with 7.81 protein-energy ratio and 28.27% protein with 8.28 protein-energy ratio. Abstract

The aim of this research was evaluating the quality and digestibility of fermented local feedstuff as well as its effect on growth performance of common carp Cyprinus carpio juvenile. The local feedstuffs tested in this experiment were kapok seed, cassava peel, copra, rubber seed, and palm kernel meal. The previously milled feedstuff was fermented with instant yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae with a dose of 0.9% w/w and incubated for 24 hours. Following this, the fermented feedstuffs were dried, mixed with reference diet with a ratio of 3:7 and supplemented with 0.5% Cr2O3 as digestibility test indicator. Common carp juveniles with an initial average body weight of 14,11±1,28 g were cultured for 30 days. Fish feces were collected since the 6th day of culture, and followed by laboratory analyses. The results show that fermentation could increase the crude protein content of feedstuff with a range of 16.85‒31.11%, and decrease crude fiber with a range of 2.45‒31.65% with the exception of copra. Furthermore, fermentation also increased the feed digestibility including protein, energy, and total digestibility by the tested fish, as it is shown that the use of fermented feedstuffs may increase protein digestibility 3.88‒11.73%, 2,21‒10,24%, and 3,63‒72,37%. Finally, it can be concluded that fermentation can increase the digestibility of feed with local ingredients by common carp juvenile.   Keywords: fermentation, digestibility, local materials, common carp

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of inorganic selenium (sodium selenite) and organic selenium (selenomethionine) supplementation on growth and viability of juvenile humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized design with eight treatments and three replications. The treatment being tested was source and dosages of selenium ie., inorganic selenium (sodium selenite) supplementation with dosages of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg Se/kg diet and organic selenium (selenomethionine) with dosages of 1, 2, and 4 mg Se/kg diet. Another treatment was unsupplemented selenium. Juveniles humpback grouper at an initial average length of 6,39±0,41 cm and body weight of 4,49±0,65 g were reared in 90×40×35 cm3 aquaria and fed artificial diet (pellet) two times daily (08.00 and 16.00) at satiation. Fishes were reared for 40 days at a stocking density of 12 fish per aquarium on sea water with salinity of 30–31 ppt and temperature of 28–29 °C. The results of this study showed that the source of selenium supplementation (inorganic or organic) affected growth performance, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activity, and blood profiles of the experimental fish. Generally, it was found that selenomethionine supplementation resulted in better fish performance than sodium selenite. In sodium selenite supplementation, survival declined with the increased dosages of Se in the diet, and the supplementation at dosage of 0,5 mg Se/kg diet showed a toxic effects. Histopatological test showed that there were damage in livers, kidneys, and intestines of fish supplemented with sodium selenite from 0.5 to 4 mg Se/kg diet. On the contrary, supplementation of selenomethionine up to 4 mg Se/kg did not show any signs of toxicity and the survival was on 86.11 to 97.22%. Feed efficiency, protein retention, lipid retention, and Se retention indicated that a dosage of 4 mg Se/kg selenomethionine supplementation was the best dosage. Keywords: selenium, viability, growth, Cromileptes altivelis, humpback grouper
