Abstract

Virus-Bacteria Diagnostic Test (VBD-Test) is three-tier diagnostic instrument for identification virus and bacteria topics. The purpose of this study was to determine the empirical validity of the VBD-Test and identify misconceptions of virus and bacteria topics in biology teachers in Malang using VBD-Test. The development research model used was the Treagust development model, namely (1) Defining content, (2) Obtaining information, and (3) Developing a diagnostic test. The empirical validity on the VBD-Test was carried out with the Pearson correlation test using Excel, while the reliability on the VBD-Test was carried out with a spearman brown split-half method using Anatest 4.0.2. There are six valid questions and eight invalid questions on the virus topic, while in bacteria topics, there are nine valid questions and six invalid questions. The results of the identification of the teacher’s concept of the virus topic were 33.33% understood the idea, 13.66% false positive, 35.53% false negative, 17.01% did not understand the concept, and 4.39% guessed. While the results of the identification of the teacher’s concept of bacteria topic were 30.13% understood the concept, 9.07% false positive, 227.63% false negative, 23.05% did not understand the concept, and 10.09% guessed. Based on these results, if identification misconception is not made to the teacher, then the misconception will not be known by the teacher on any material, and the learning material submitted by the teacher will remain a misconception so that students will have misconception.

Abstract

This research aims to identify misconceptions of Biodiversity and Protist material. This type of research is a quantitative descriptive study. The sampling technique is purposive sampling with the provisions that misconceptions have not been identified, and students have received Biodiversity and protists. The object of the research is the students of class XI SMA Islam Malang, SMAN 1 Trenggalek, MAN 2 Lamongan, and SMAN 1 Pare, each in one class with a total of 127 students. Retrieval of data using a diagnostic instrument in the form of multiple-choice open reason (MCOR) with a total of 15 questions about Biodiversity and 15 questions about Protist. The results showed the average of misconceptions of 22,08% experienced by students on Biodiversity and the mean of misconceptions of 13,25% experienced by students on Protist. The highest misconception occurred in the threat indicator of biodiversity damage that is equal to 35,91%. Whereas for Protist, the highest misconception occurred in the sub-indicator identification of the general characteristics of Protist like an animal that is 26,28%. The conclusion is the misconception on the material of Biodiversity and Protist, including misconception type 2 or Mi-2, that is, students answer incorrectly to the core questions and are accompanied by the right reasons. A suggestion from the research that has been done is that it is necessary to develop a level three diagnostic instrument used by experts to find out students' misconceptions so that the results are more detailed. Besides, it is necessary to identify the causes of misconceptions and identify misconceptions in student handbooks on Biodiversity and Protist.

Abstract

Education in 21st Century has supported use of the 2013 Curriculum which demands skills, one of which is creative thinking skills. This skill demand is inversely proportional to the real conditions in class XI MIPA 3 SMAN 2 Malang. Initially, creative thinking skills showed an average of 50.20%, indicated that student still had difficulty writing many different answers and were not equipped with details, used the language of books and the internet, did not see problems from various directions. Low cognitive learning outcomes are proven by the 2020/2021 odd semester exam scores with 41.39% of students getting scores below the KKM. Teachers have difficulty implementing learning models during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research aims to improve creative thinking skills and cognitive learning outcomes using the POGIL model combined with a digital mind map based on online learning. The research aims to improve students’ creative thinking skills and cognitive learning outcomes using POGIL model combined digital mind map based on online learning. The method uses Classroom Action Research with Kemmis & Mc Taggart design. Collecting data through creative thinking questions from UKBM, digital mind map, and pretest-posttest. The results of the cycle I and cycle II showed an increase in creative thinking skills from 78.37 to 86.26 (UKBM) and 83.74 to 91.50 (digital mind map), the average class cognitive learning outcomes from 78.90 to 80.29, and classical cognitive completeness by 80.65% to 87.10%. The increase was due to the integration of guided inquiry, cooperative, and digital mind map that we're able to create an active atmosphere, creative thinking, teamwork, and concept formation. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jbt.v11.i2.28827

Abstract

his research investigates what students feel during open class as part of the lesson study framework and how this affects their learning experience. A descriptive quantitative method was employed in this study. The primary data were obtained from questionnaires that aimed to understand the factors in three components: students' comfort during lesson study, students' perceptions of teachers' performance on teaching and learning, and students' achievement during lesson study. The participants were 21 tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 8 Malang, East Java, Indonesia, who took part in a biology lesson conducted through the lesson study approach. The results indicate that most students felt positively charged, with 70% feeling comfortable in open classes, 91% providing positive teacher performance feedback, and 93% feeling they had performed well. This study highlighted how lesson study can help create a reflective and cooperative learning culture that benefits all participants, including the teachers. Lesson study promotes a positive environment in the classroom that students see as conducive for engagement and actual learning through improved lesson planning, classroom management, and instructional delivery. The findings also emphasize the need to seek and find methods to increase student comfort and reduce negative emotions experienced by students during open classes. Future research is recommended to examine the long-term impacts of open-class experiences within the lesson study on students' academic motivation, emotional resilience, and learning outcomes.
