Abstract

Despite the flipped learning growing popularity, empirical research to increase students' reading abilities is still lacking. The majority of research concentrates on students' impressions of the English language rather than particular language abilities. If there is, speaking, listening, and writing is dominant. This systematic literature review summarizes study findings on trends and outcomes of flipped learning-based instruction in teaching reading. The identification, screening, feasibility, and inclusion phase found thirty-one articles between 2015 and 2022 from the Scopus database with a premium Scopus account to access all sources without limits. The results showed that the research trend of flipped learning in teaching reading was less attractive to researchers than other English skills. It can be seen from the lack of publications from year to year and even tends to decline until May 2022. Further research on flipped learning in teaching reading can enrich the literature on knowledge. In addition, Flipped Learning has positive outcomes in influencing students' performance, especially if combined with other methods. For future research, several different research scopes can be considered, such as creating models or designs to apply flipped learning to students' reading performance and comprehension.

Abstract

Research into self-efficacy has received widespread recognition in the literature. However, little study has been done on students’ self-efficacy in asynchronous online academic interactions. This study examined graduate students’ self-efficacy in regulating their online interaction strategies. Grounded in the Asynchronous Online Self-Regulated Learning Inventory (AOSRLI), the study employed a virtual case study using an online self-assessment survey and focus group interview. Seventy-eight English education master students from two universities were approached and agreed to participate in the study. As a result, the study highlighted several critical findings: 1) lack of confidence in online interaction with the professors, 2) closed-mindedness to criticism, 3) self-fanaticism, and 4) the need for self-dialoguing and self-navigation. The students were commonly inactive, indifferent, and demotivated in their asynchronous online interactions, thus creating ineffective learning communication among them. Self-regulated learning cannot grow alone and rely on the students’ in-person learning initiatives, whereas they need pedagogical imperatives to scaffold their questioning, responding, and critiquing skills. The study suggests improving teachers’ scaffolding strategies and building students’ online community of practice to promote their activeness, engagement, and participation. The implication of this study calls for the inclusion of asynchronous virtual interaction skills into online learning pedagogy and CALL teacher education.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is one of the important elements that can support the students’ language proficiency. It helps students to follow and enjoy the teaching content delivered by their teachers. The educator of the EFL context, particularly at lower secondary school, attempts to design the teaching material which is oriented to enrich the students’ vocabulary acquisition. The research discovers that various ways can be used to build students’ vocabulary. One of them is literature. Therefore, this research aims to investigate can English literary works be integrated with the teaching strategies to develop the EFL students’ vocabulary. To observe it, the researchers use library research to find and analyze some sources (e.g. articles, proceedings, books) as the collected data, which discuss enriching English vocabulary through literature. The result shows that two things must be considered if teachers would like to incorporate literary works in their content. 1) Types of literary works used by teachers to enhance their learners’ vocabulary, 2) Teacher’s teaching strategy to make the EFL learners memorize the unrecognize words.
