Abstract

Research into social justice in ELT has become increasingly critical. However, social justice in CALL, especially synchronous online EFL teaching, is scarcely investigated. Some lecturers are ignorant of the value of social justice in their Google Meet and Zoom classes. To fill this void, the study examined the lecturers’ perceived fairness, equity, respect, generosity, tolerance, and digital safety in SOLT. This article reports on a virtual case study that showcases the lecturers’ social justice and its transformation into their virtual learning environment. Twelve English lecturers agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected via a self-evaluation survey, virtual observation, and semi-structured interviews. As a result, the study shed light on four critical points: 1) the paucity of lecturers’ social justice knowledge and skills, 2) the call for negotiated pedagogy, 3) the absence of social justice in CALL pedagogy and 4) the need for social justice online community of practice. The study’s implication encourages language teachers to improve their social justice skills and literacies through CPD and CALL pedagogy.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore lecturers’ perceptions on multiple intelligence-based instruction in teaching English for Islamic studies. The key question is how lecturers understand the concept of MI-based instruction. This study was conducted at one of the Islamic universities in Indonesia involving three lecturers. The instruments used were multiple intelligence inventory questionnaires and interview guidelines. The data found that teaching and learning activities should be designed to enhance each student's different intelligences, facilitating strength intelligence. Students not only have language and mathematics intelligence but also have several different intelligences owned by students, including: verbal linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, visual-spatial, bodily kinesthetic, naturalistic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and existential intelligence. MI-based teaching provides a new outlook in improving the quality of teaching and meaningful learning. MI-based instruction respects each student's learning style, which is indicated by the student's preference in learning. Therefore, using MI-based instruction in the teaching and learning process will be easy, fun, and respect everyone's way of receiving material. This study encourages future research on connecting the understanding of the multiple intelligences of lecturers with the needs of students in the process of learning English for Islamic studies.

Abstract

This phenomenological study explores the experiences, motivations, and challenges of students at Universitas Negeri Makassar engaging in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) English language learning and practice. The research aims to gain insights into self-directed language learning and provide valuable information for educational practices and policies in the university context. A purposeful sample of 15-20 students, representing a diverse range of experiences, was selected to participate in the study. Data collection involved a combination of semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and reflective journals, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the students' perspectives. Inductive thematic analysis was employed to identify key themes and patterns in the data, with the findings presented as a rich, descriptive narrative. Strategies for establishing trustworthiness included triangulation of data sources, member checking, and peer debriefing. This study contributes to our understanding of DIY language learning by highlighting the DIY English language learning strategies, benefits and challenges, and students’ ways of assessing DIY English language learning at Universitas Negeri Makassar, ultimately informing future educational practices and policies.
