Abstract

Absratct: This research aimed to determine the correlation between the motivation and speaking ability of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The sample of this research was all class of the second year students consisted of 37 students. The sample was chosen by using Proportional Sampling Techniques. To collect the data in this research were questionnaire and speaking test. The motivation data was gained by using Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMBT) questionnaire by Gardner and the speaking ability data was gained by monologue test. The results of the study show that there was a correlation between two variables. The value of correlation coefficient was 0.643. It was on scale 0.60 ? 0.799 it meant that the correlation between students? motivation and speaking ability of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru categorized as high correlation. It is considered that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. So, it can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between the motivation and speaking ability of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. In other words, the students? motivation affects their speaking ability.Key Words: Correlation, Motivation, Speaking Ability

Abstract

 Abstract: Based on observations of the initial studies in the field of emotional intelligence, shows that a child's emotional low. This looks uncontrolled children's emotions, irritability and often beat her. If mistakes did not apologize, do not seem to want to know about what he had done, tends to be moody and jealous of his friend. Based on the existing problems, the purpose of this study was to describe the use of role-play method can improve emotional intelligence of children aged 5-6 years in early childhood Permata Hati Benai Subdistrict Regency Kuantan Singingi. This study uses classroom action research that is designed in the form of two cycles, the cycle 1dengan 3 meetings and cycle 2 to 3 meetings. In each cycle consists of four phases: Phase Planning, Implementation Phase Action, Phase Phase Observation and Reflection. Subjects in this study were 5-6 years old children early childhood Permata Hati Benai Subdistrict Regency Kuantan Singingi totaling 12 children. The technique of collecting data through observation and documentation, while data analysis using descriptive statistics. From the data analysis, Emotional Intelligence before the cycle of children at an average of 40.41%. This suggests that emotional intelligence of children still low at under 50%. This study followed by one cycle with a yield of 46.10% with criteria began to grow and continued in cycle 2 with the result of 78.46%. Based on these results prove that there is an increase emotional intelligence of children through role-play method. This study therefore declared successful.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out whether there was a correlation between grammatical knowledge and writing ability of the second year students of MAN 1 Kuantan Singingi. The population was the second year students of MAN 1 Kuantan Singingi. The sample was decided by using cluster random sampling and there were XI MIA 2 and XI MIA 3 as the samples. Grammar test was applied to know the students’ grammatical knowledge and writing test was applied to know the students’ writing ability in analytical exposition text. The obtained data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Formula which was assisted by IBM SPSS Statistics 23 program. From the analysis, it was found that the coefficient correlation was categorized as mediocre correlation. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. In conclusion, there was a correlation between grammatical knowledge and writing ability of the second year students of MAN 1 Kuantan Singingi. The obtained determination coefficient (R Square) was twenty percent. This means that grammatical knowledge clarifies twenty percent towards writing ability. The rest eighty percents is probably due to other factors which are not involved in this research.Key Words: Correlation, Grammatical Knowledge, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental design was aimed to find out if the application of role play technique is effective in the speaking ability. The reasons for conducting this research because of several problems: the teachers did not use English frequently and they still used monotonous way of class discussion focusing on text book, and furthermore, the lack of ideas became the other reason of the difficulties faced by the students when the teacher gave them a topic to be explored in spoken form. The participants were 37 studentsof the second year office administration students of SMK N 1 Pekanbaru. The time of the research was on academic 2013/2014, from April to June at the second semester.The data was collected by using of pretest and posttest. The data were assessed by the three raters and analyzed by using of SPSS Application. The research finding showed that  the implementation of applying role play as the teaching technique was effective to  improve students’ speaking ability. The finding also proved that in the pretest students’ average score was only 58.49 and it improved to 74.16 in the posttest.In addition, applying role play as a teaching technique in English language teaching and learning could also improve students’ ability to speak English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension.   Keywords:Role play technique, Students’ speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This quasi-experimental research aimed to find out whether there is significant effect of webbing technique on the first year students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph at SMP N 23 Pekanbaru. The researcher used cluster sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples were 36 students as experimental group and 36 students as control group. Writing test is used to get the data by giving pretest and posttest. In analyzing the data, the researcher used t-test formula. The analysis of the data showed that there was significant effect of webbing technique on the students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph. The mean score of the students before the treatment was 55.83 in experimental group and 56.58 in control group. The mean score of the students after the treatment was 71.09 in experimental group, while in control group was 66.70. Moreover, from the statistical analysis, it was found out the T-observed (1.83) was higher than T-table at the level of significance 0.05 (1.667). Based on this finding, it is suggested that webbing technique can be used by the teacher as an alternative method in the teaching writing, particularly in descriptive text.Keywords: Webbing Technique, Writing Ability, Descriptive Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out if there is a significant effect of using Collaborative Strategic Reading technique on the ability of the first year students of Madrasah Aliyah Muhammadiyan Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. The research design was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the first year students in academic year 2019/2020. The sample was all the first year students (X IPA and X IPS) which consist of 35 students. The instrument used to collect the data was a reading test. The test consist of 40 items. The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS version 23.0. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (76.00>70.03). The value of the t-test was higher than t-table (15.485>2.042) at 5% of significant level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that Collaborative Strategic Reading technique was effective for teaching reading comprehension concerning narrative texts. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using Collaborative Strategic Reading technique on the ability of the first year students of Madrasah Aliyah Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. In other words, teaching reading comprehension through Collaborative Strategic Reading technique is an effective way to solve the students’ problem on the reading comprehension.Key Words: Effect, Collaborative Strategic Reading technique, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the Ability of the Second Year Students of the State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 1 Pekanbaru in Comprehending Recount Texts. The population of this research was the Second Year Students of the State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 1 Pekanbaru. The number of sample was 30 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The research instrument was multiple choice questions consisted 40 questions. The test was given by using eight components of reading comprehension and recount texts such as main idea, factual information, meaning of difficult word, reference, inference, social function of recount text, generic structures of recount text and language features of recount text. The data were analyzed by classifying them into four levels of ability, such as poor, average, good, and excellent. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of the State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 1 Pekanbaru was at good level with mean score was 66.1.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading comprehension, Recount text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was conducted to find out the students’ speaking ability in term of recount text. The samples of this research were 40 students from SMPIT At-Taqwa Pelalawan. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples. The instrument to measure the students’ speaking ability was in the form of monologue, retelling a story in recount text. The students’ speaking scores were measured by three raters. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the mean score of the students’ speaking ability is 53. From each aspect, it could be seen that the highest score was in terms of vocabulary with the average score of 64. It is followed by grammar with the average score of 60, then comprehension with the average score of 57.5, and fluency with the average score of 49. The lowest score was in terms of pronunciation with the average score of 46.3. Therefore, it was recommended for the teacher to provide more speaking activities which support students’ speaking skill, particularly in terms of pronunciation and fluency, since these aspects are the lowest, and the students’ need to practice their speaking skill inside and outside the classroom.Key Words: Speaking, Ability, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to know the students’ perception on their learning reading online of the second year students of English study program FKIP Universitas Riau. A descriptive-quantitative approach research design was used to conduct this study. The total number of participants is 119 students from the second semester of English study program, classes 4A, 4B, and 4C in the academic year 2019/2020. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of 21 statements about students’ perceptions on learning reading online. Google Form is the media to distribute the questionnaire due to the global pandemic of Covid-19. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. The results of the study indicate that learning reading online does not cause any effects on reading comprehension because perception on learning reading online is the majority in the medium level. But some facilities when learning reading online help students and make them easier in their learning process. The findings of this research showed that there are advantages on learning reading online; the convenience when they understand the text because of the facilities, save copy paper, clear the screen without bad printing quality, and improve their online translation.Key Words: Students’ Perception, Online Learning, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This study aims to identify the students’ acceptance level of the use of Google Classroom as a platform in Blended-learning and to compare the results between three departments of Language and Arts Department in FKIP of Universitas Riau. Data of this survey research were collected through an online survey using Google form and analysed descriptively. The survey was distributed to all students and 205 of them responded the survey coming from three departments: English Language and Arts Department, Indonesian Language and Arts Department, and Japanese Language and Arts Department in FKIP of Universitas Riau. The questionnaires in the survey used Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) proposed by Davis (1986) with four indicators to measure the students’ acceptance: Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEU),  Behavioral Intention (BI), and Actual System Use (AU).   The students’ acceptance levels in terms of  Perceived usefulness (62,8%) was in very good category; Perceived Ease of Use (67,2%) was in very good category; Behavioral Intention (69%) was in very good category; and Actual System Use (48,55%) was  good category. The result shows that the level of the students’ acceptance of Google Classroom, in general, is Very Good (62%). It means, the students positively accepted Google Classroom as a platform in blended-learning. Behavioral Intention was the indicator with the highest percentage (69%) which explains that students are interested and intend to increase their use of the Google Classroom. Data also shows that out of the three departments, English Language and Arts Department has the highest average mean score (3.67) followed by Indonesian Language and Arts Department (3.57) and Japanese Language and Arts Department (3.54). This study implies that English department students experienced more acceptance in using the Google Classroom compared to the other two departments.
