Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of the tahfidz program at Al Amri Islamic Boarding School, Probolinggo, as a holistic educational model that integrates spiritual formation, moral cultivation, emotional resilience, and disciplined memorization practices. The research addresses the gap in existing studies that often treat Quran memorization as a cognitive activity without systematically analyzing its multidimensional character-building functions. Employing a qualitative field research design, data were collected through participatory observations, in-depth semi-structured interviews with students, teachers, and administrators, and institutional document analysis. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis supported by methodological and source triangulation. The findings reveal that structured daily routines, meaning-based memorization, intensive mentoring (riāyah ṭ-ṭullāb), and quality-oriented evaluation significantly enhance memorization stability, emotional regulation, moral awareness, and spiritual depth. Discipline and responsibility gradually shift from external enforcement to internal self-regulation, strengthened by peer mentoring and communal culture. However, academic workload, mental fatigue, and fluctuating motivation remain challenges affecting memorization consistency. The novelty of this study lies in conceptualizing tahfidz as a holistic pedagogical framework that integrates cognitive mastery with spiritual–moral transformation and psychosocial support. This study contributes theoretically by expanding Islamic educational discourse on holistic character formation and practically by offering a structured model for designing sustainable, spiritually grounded tahfidz programs.

Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which digital media use and the school environment predict students’ learning interest in Islamic Education. Amid the rapid expansion of technology-supported learning, understanding how digital media and school contexts shape student engagement has become increasingly important, particularly in faith-based education. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected using a validated and reliable questionnaire administered to all 103 students of Integrated Islamic junior high school (SMP IT Permata Probolinggo, Indonesia) through saturated sampling. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to examine both partial and simultaneous effects. The findings indicate that digital learning media (p = 0.003; t = 3.018) and the school environment (p = 0.005; t = 2.873) each have a significant positive effect on students’ learning interest. Simultaneously, both variables significantly predict learning interest (p = 0.000), with an R² value of 0.660, indicating that 66% of the variance in learning interest is explained by the two predictors. These results provide empirical evidence that the integration of interactive digital media and a supportive school environment plays a crucial role in enhancing students’ engagement in Islamic Education. This study contributes to the literature on digital learning in faith-based schools by offering quantitative evidence from Indonesia’s Integrated Islamic School context and highlights the importance of optimizing technology use alongside conducive learning environment.

Abstract

This study examines the Tong Gentong tradition during Maulid Nabi in Pohsangit Leres Village, Probolinggo, Indonesia, conceptualising it as community-based Islamic education embedded in local culture. It analyses the internalisation of religious values: “ikhlas” (sincerity), generosity, “syukr” (gratitude), “ukhuwah” (brotherhood), and “ta‘awun” (mutual cooperation) through social practices and elucidates pedagogical mechanism beyond formal institutions. This study employed interpretive qualitative ethnographic case study. Data from participatory observation, in-depth interviews with key community stakeholders, and field documentation were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis to identify value transmission patterns. The findings indicate that Tong Gentong operates as a living pedagogical system where values are internalised through exemplary conduct, habituation, and intergenerational participation rather than through formal instruction. The tradition creates a shared moral space where religious teachings are enacted through collective practices, enabling sustainable character formation within everyday community life. This study reframes local traditions as structured informal Islamic educational mechanisms, offering an empirically grounded model integrating faith, culture and solidarity-enabling communities and educators to leverage such traditions for sustainable religious value internalisation in non-formal curricula. This study expands Islamic education beyond schools by reframing traditions as informal pedagogical systems integrating faith, culture, and solidarity, also offering empirically grounded community-based moral learning model.

Abstract

The phenomenon of increasing psychological pressure among santri due to the density of academic and spiritual activities necessitates effective interventions based on religious approaches. This study aims to analyse the effect of habitual dhikr practice on learning tranquillity among santri at Al-Ishlah Modern Islamic Boarding School, Bondowoso. This quantitative study employs an associative approach with a sample of 100 santri from grades 4, 5, and 6 of Kulliyatul Muballighien Al-Islamiyah (KMI). Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire (1–5) and analysed through validity and reliability tests, as well as simple linear regression using SPSS version 25. The results indicate that habitual dhikr practice has a positive and significant effect on learning tranquillity (R² = 0.47; t = 6.85; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that consistent dhikr practice is capable of reducing academic stress levels and enhancing the emotional stability of santri. This study strengthens transcendental psychology theory, which positions dhikr as a mechanism of spiritual self-regulation. Practically, these results may serve as a foundation for the development of spiritual mindfulness programmes within Islamic boarding school environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the implementation of institutional rules on the level of student discipline at Kulliyatul Muballighien Al-Islamiyyah (KMI), Al-Ishlah Islamic Boarding School, Bondowoso. Field observations indicate a 10% decrease in students’ compliance with pesantren regulations compared to the previous year, suggesting a gap between the ideal values of pesantren education and actual student behavior. Based on B.F. Skinner’s behaviorism theory and Travis Hirschi’s social control theory, institutional rules in pesantren are viewed as instruments of behavioral reinforcement and social control that play a role in shaping student discipline through mechanisms of reinforcement and the internalization of moral values. This study employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design, involving a population of 98 twelfth-grade students selected using total sampling. Data were collected through a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 27 through normality tests, linearity tests, and linear regression analysis. The results showed that the implementation of institutional rules had a significant effect on the level of student discipline, with an F value of 55.099 and a significance level of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This indicates that the better the implementation of institutional rules, the higher the level of student discipline. Theoretically, these findings strengthen the concept that institutional rules function as a means of character building and social control within the Islamic education system. Practically, this study provides important implications for pesantren management, suggesting that institutional rules should not merely serve as supervisory tools but also function as a medium for internalizing values of discipline, responsibility, and moral awareness among students.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of the implementation of the WAFA Method on the tajweed proficiency of Year 6 students at SD Muhammadiyah 01 Tanggul during the 2025/2026 academic year. The background of this research stems from the generally low level of tajweed skills among students in reading the Qur’an, particularly in the articulation of letters (makhraj) and the application of recitation rules (ahkam al-tajweed). The WAFA Method was chosen because it combines the talaqqi, musyafahah, and tilawah bil nagham approaches, which emphasise active student engagement through repeated practice in reading, listening to, and imitating the teacher's recitation. This approach is believed to improve phonetic accuracy and students’ understanding of tajweed more effectively than conventional methods. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design, specifically the Nonequivalent Control Group Design model. The sample consisted of two parallel classes with a total of 48 students, in which the experimental class was taught using the WAFA Method while the control class received instruction through conventional methods. Data were collected via tajweed proficiency tests administered before and after the intervention (pre-test and post-test). Data analysis was conducted using an Independent Samples T-Test with SPSS version 25 to determine the significance of differences between the two groups. The results showed that the application of the WAFA Method had a positive and significant effect on students’ tajweed skills. The experimental class showed an average improvement of 15.66 points, while the control class improved by only 2.08 points. The t-test yielded a value of t = -8.399 with a significance level of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that the WAFA Method is effective in enhancing letter pronunciation accuracy, the application of recitation rules, and students’ fluency in reading the Qur’an. Therefore, the WAFA Method is a viable alternative strategy for Qur’anic instruction at the primary school level, contributing to the development of a generation capable of reciting the Qur’an tartil, in accordance with the rules of tajweed.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of cleanliness-based mutual cooperation practices on students’ ecological awareness at Diponegoro Islamic Boarding School, Bali. The research employed a quantitative approach using an explanatory research design. The population consisted of 65 students, all of whom were included as the research sample. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire developed based on Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus theory and Stern’s Environmental Awareness Theory. The data were analyzed using classical assumption tests and simple linear regression with SPSS version 26. The findings indicate that cleanliness-based mutual cooperation has a very strong and significant effect on students’ ecological awareness, with a coefficient of determination of 80.6%. This result demonstrates that collective and consistently implemented social practices within the boarding school environment are highly effective in shaping students’ ecological awareness across cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. In conclusion, the habituation of mutual cooperation in cleanliness activities represents an effective strategy for fostering ecological character education in Islamic boarding schools and holds strong potential to be developed as a sustainable, value based environmental education model grounded in Islamic principles.

Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the effect of aqidah (Islamic creed) understanding on students’ digital ethics at SD Plus Al Ishlah Bondowoso. The research employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. The study population comprised all 80 students of SD Plus Al Ishlah Bondowoso, who were simultaneously designated as the sample through a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through simple linear regression using SPSS version 26. The findings indicate that aqidah understanding has a positive and statistically significant effect on students’ digital ethics, as evidenced by a regression coefficient of 0.815 and a significance value of p < 0.05. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.505 demonstrates that aqidah understanding accounts for 50.5% of the variance in students’ digital ethics. These results underscore that aqidah education functions not only as a theological foundation but also plays a strategic role in shaping students’ ethical behavior in the digital era. Therefore, the integration of aqidah education with digital literacy should be further strengthened to foster character development and digital ethics among students in Islamic elementary schools.

Abstract

This research aims to conceptually examine the integration of traditionalism in the thought of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, Kh Ahmad Dahlan and progressivism according to John Dewey in the context of education, focusing on progressivism as the basis for religious moderation-based education. The study focuses on how both thoughts are understood as a foundation for human formation through the educational process, identifying common ground, differences, and possibilities for integration within the educational framework. This research uses a literature study method, examining the main works of KH Hasyim Asy'ari and John Dewey, as well as relevant scientific sources discussing religious moderation education, traditionalism, and progressivism. The results show that KH. Hasyim Asy'ari's thought, as an Indonesian traditionalist scholar, emphasizes the importance of morals, scientific sanad, and balance between religious knowledge and general knowledge. Meanwhile, John Dewey, an American progressive philosopher, emphasizes education as a process of experience, freedom of thought, and adaptation to social change. The synthesis between KH. Hasyim Asy'ari's traditional values and John Dewey's progressive ideas produces a moderate education concept that balances spiritual, intellectual, and social aspects. Religious moderation-based education inspired by these two figures can be an alternative model in facing the challenges of radicalism and moral degradation in the modern era.
