Abstract

Although education has long been recognized as a science, the advent of the digital era has introduced new challenges regarding its relevance and effectiveness in preparing learners to meet the ever-changing demands of the workforce. Many educational institutions have not yet fully integrated digital technology optimally into the learning process, resulting in a gap between educational theory and its application in a digital context. This study aims to explore the extent to which education as a science can adapt to the developments of the digital era and how the education system can respond to the growing need for digital skills among learners. This research utilizes data sources based on literature from previous relevant studies. The article employs a qualitative approach with a literature review method to analyze the research themes. The process begins with the identification of relevant topics, followed by the collection of various literature sources. The researcher then analyzes the data to identify significant patterns and themes. The analysis results are synthesized by integrating findings from various sources, yielding a comprehensive understanding. This study demonstrates that education as a science has significant potential to adapt to the digital era. Therefore, the current education system needs to innovate and transform to meet the digital skill requirements of learners. This research implies the necessity for educational responsiveness, emphasizing the need for collaboration between curriculum developers and education practitioners to ensure that education not only keeps pace with technological advancements but also provides relevant and adaptive skills.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays an important role in shaping the akhlak and character of students, especially in the context of Vocational High Schools (SMK) that prepare students for the world of work. However, PAI learning in SMK is often still theoretical and less relevant to industrial needs. This study aims to examine teachers' and students' perceptions of a PAI learning model oriented toward work-readiness at SMK ICB Bandung. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The results of a word frequency query using NVivo 12 showed that akhlak aspects were the primary concern in PAI learning, with the highest frequency of occurrence in the interviews. Both teachers and students view akhlak such as honesty, responsibility, discipline, and work ethic—as fundamental components of character that directly support readiness to enter the workforce. Learning models applied include Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning (PjBL), Discovery Learning, and approaches such as Uswah Hasanah and Ibrah Mauidzah. However, implementation still faces challenges, such as limited teacher experience with industrial contexts, lack of facilities, and overly theoretical teaching methods. Students express a desire for more interactive, practice-oriented, and industry-relevant learning models that integrate Islamic values into work simulations and Islamic soft-skills training. Therefore, innovation is needed to develop a more applicable PAI learning model, including the use of digital technologies and improved teacher competence in understanding the demands of the professional world.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the efforts of internalizing the values of wasathiyyah in the endeavor to enhance religiosity and tolerance attitudes based on mentoring. Since the Indonesian government introduced the concept of religious moderation as a preventive measure to counteract radicalism in society, the majority of State Universities have sought to implement this policy through various programs on their campuses. In Indonesia, the official stance is against radical ideologies, given the potential divisive consequences and the emergence of terrorist actions. In 2016, the Setara Institute surveyed 171 schools in Jakarta and Bandung and observed that seeds of terrorist ideologies had emerged within classrooms. At the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, supported by the Rector, the Tutorial program was established with the aim of enhancing the individual piety of students. Using a qualitative approach, data collection combined ethnographic methods and interviews with 17 students. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman framework, including drawing, displaying data, reduction, and conclusion. The research findings indicate significant results, wherein the mentoring-based tutorial program with the internalization of wasathiyyah values enhances the religiosity and tolerance of students through the selection of qualified mentors, a wasathiyyah curriculum, inclusive communities, and ongoing evaluation. Collaboration with relevant parties is deemed necessary.  Keywords:  Wasathiyyah Values, Mentoring, Tolerance

Abstract

Compassion plays a crucial role in human life, particularly in education, where it helps shape positive character traits in children and enhances their altruistic behavior. This study aims to analyze Karen Armstrong's perspective on compassion as a core competency for educators in Islamic education. A qualitative research method with a descriptive-analytical approach was employed. The data sources include the primary source, Karen Armstrong's book Compassion: 12 Steps to a More Compassionate Life, and secondary sources such as relevant documents, scholarly articles, and other data. The research procedure was carried out in three steps: reviewing relevant references, collecting necessary references, and analyzing them according to the research objectives. The findings reveal that compassion, according to Armstrong, is the ability to place oneself in another person's position, to feel their suffering as if it were one's own, and to voluntarily engage in alleviating that suffering. In the context of Islamic education, compassion is a competency that every educator should possess. Educators who embody and implement compassion in their teaching activities can create a positive educational environment and foster constructive communication, thereby supporting the optimal development of children's character.

Abstract

The Qur'anic Literacy Eradication Training through the LITERAT Learning Model aims to enhance the capacity of Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in systematically assessing and teaching Qur'anic literacy. The training involved 50 teachers in Bandung Regency and was conducted as an interactive workshop combining theoretical presentations, simulations, and hands-on practice. The LITERAT model—which consists of seven stages: Listening, Identification, Treatment, Explanation, Reading, Assessment, and Testing—equips participants with the ability to categorize students' Qur'anic reading skills into five levels: TPD1, TPD2, TD, TT, and TM. Before the training, most participants could only make general distinctions between "fluent" and "non-fluent" students in reading the Qur'an. After completing the training, participants reported the ability to apply classification indicators in a more measurable and structured manner. Pre-test results showed an average participant score of 61.5, which increased to 83.2 in the post-test. The majority of participants demonstrated improvement in the accuracy of student assessment classifications. Additionally, the majority of participants stated that the training was highly beneficial. The training strengthened participants' understanding of the LITERAT model and improved their pedagogical and evaluative competencies in Qur'anic instruction. This intervention significantly contributes to empowering teachers as objective, data-driven evaluators of religious literacy.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of character education through Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam, or PAI) in Indonesian schools, focusing on the development of students’ self-efficacy in internalizing moral values as prescribed by the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in phases E and F. Employing an Interpretive Phenomenological Approach (IPA), the research involved 18 purposively selected students from three different school types in Bandung. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and focus group discussions. Analysis revealed four central themes: students’ internal struggles in cultivating moral self-control; the influence of social environments on collective efficacy; the emergence of moral agency within digital spaces; and the role of spiritual maturity in fostering authentic leadership. The findings demonstrate a developmental trajectory in students’ self-efficacy from initial efforts to resist negative behaviors (Phase E) to the embodiment of innovative, integrity-based leadership (Phase F). This study contributes to the theoretical expansion of self-efficacy by proposing the concept of “spiritual self-efficacy” and contextualizing Bandura’s four sources of efficacy within Islamic moral education. The results underscore that effective character education must move beyond mere transmission of moral knowledge to systematically fostering students’ confidence in consistently and authentically enacting moral behavior. These insights offer significant implications for advancing a more holistic and character-centered PAI curriculum and pedagogical strategy.

Abstract

Meaningful education demands active engagement between teachers and students through appropriate learning strategies. An effective learning process should consider the spiritual dimension as a core element in developing human potential. This study aims to explore spiritual-based learning strategies as presented in Ta’lim al-Muta’allim, a classical Islamic educational text by Shaykh al-Zarnuji. This research employs a qualitative approach using the library research method. Spiritual intelligence is viewed as an inner capacity to find meaning and values in life, connecting the individual to metaphysical reality and the Divine. The results reveal that the spiritual-based learning strategies found in the text include: (1) designing learning based on students’ real needs; (2) presenting materials in accordance with students’ level of understanding, supported by media such as inspirational videos and religious-social activities; (3) creating enjoyable and age-appropriate classroom environments through arts, play, or storytelling; and (4) assigning reflective tasks such as reading, writing, and internalizing lessons to enhance students’ understanding and application of the materials in daily life. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of spiritual values into classical pedagogical strategies, offering practical implications for strengthening students’ character and spiritual awareness in the context of contemporary Islamic education.
