Abstract

Anemia is a significant health problem among pregnant women and is associated with complications such as low birth weight, delivery risks, and high maternal and infant morbidity. The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Indonesia remains high. This review aimed to identify and synthesize factors influencing anemia in pregnant women through a systematic review approach. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for articles published between 2019 and 2024 using the keywords “causing factors” OR “anemia” OR “pregnant women.” A total of 1,963 records were identified, 1,212 screened, 467 full-text articles assessed for eligibility, and 6 studies were finally included. The included studies reported anemia prevalence ranging from 24.1% to 83.5%. Quantitative findings indicated significant associations between anemia and delayed first ANC visit in the third trimester (OR = 10.42; CI: 4.27-25.4), history of anemia before pregnancy (OR = 4.64), living in urban areas (OR = 1.8), low income with inadequate dietary diversity (OR = 1.94), inadequate vegetable intake (OR = 2.62), meat (OR = 2.71), eggs (OR = 2.98), fish (OR = 2.38), lack of formal education (OR = 3.86), non-use of iron tablets (OR = 2.64), Plasmodium vivax infection (OR = 7.58), and chronic energy deficiency (OR = 12.75-24). These risk factors were categorized into internal factors (maternal age, gestational age, parity, pregnancy spacing, nutritional status), external factors (iron supplementation, antenatal visits, nutritional intake/consumption), and sociodemographic factors (economic status, education level). Maternal age, gestational age, poor compliance with iron supplementation, and inadequate nutritional intake were the most consistently associated with anemia.

Abstract

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Early screening through Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and Pap smear has been proven effective in reducing incidence and mortality; however, screening coverage remains low. The Health Belief Model (HBM) is frequently applied to understand health-related behaviors, including cervical cancer screening. Literature indicates that perceived risk (perceived susceptibility and severity) and perceived barriers are critical constructs influencing the adoption of screening practices. This review aims to analyze studies published between 2020 and 2025 regarding the influence of perceived risk and barriers on cervical screening uptake using VIA and Pap smear. The findings reveal that low perceived risk reduces the intention to undergo screening, while perceived barriers (such as cost, embarrassment, lack of information, and limited access) consistently hinder participation. HBM-based interventions that emphasize risk awareness and barrier reduction have been shown to effectively increase screening uptake.

Abstract

Food safety is a critical public health issue, especially in institutional settings such as university canteens, where large populations are served daily. Inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices by food handlers can lead to foodborne illnesses, placing students and staff at risk. This study evaluated hygiene and sanitation conditions in the canteens of a leading public university in South Sumatra Province, Indonesia, known for its active food service facilities. This study examined food handlers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices and assessed the microbiological safety of chicken curry by testing for Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination and total plate count. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 35 food handlers and 7 chicken curry samples across multiple canteens. Structured questionnaires and microbiological analysis were employed. Results revealed that although most food handlers demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitudes, 57.1% exhibited poor hygiene practices. Several chicken curry samples exceeded acceptable E. coli levels, indicating potential health risks. These findings underscore the urgent need for ongoing hygiene training, strict supervision, and standardized certification for food handlers to mitigate microbial hazards and ensure food safety in university settings.

Abstract

The non-compliance of female adolescents with the consumption of iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) poses a challenge to reducing the incidence of anemia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of nutrition education using the local culture-based approach on the level of knowledge and attitudes regarding awareness, interest, evaluation, trial, and adoption dimensions, as well as compliance of female adolescents in consuming IFAS. The intervention was conducted using a quantitative quasi-experimental design approach. The sample comprised 68 and 58 senior high school girls in the control and intervention groups. The intervention group received IFAS and local culture-based nutrition education for 12 weeks and followed up after four weeks; while, the control group was given a leaflet and IFAS. Univariate analysis was conducted to analyze the participants’ characteristics; while, bivariate analysis used an independent T-test. The multivariate analysis was carried out using multiple linear and logistic regression analyses. The study showed a statistically significant increase in knowledge and attitudes scores in the intervention group (p-value<0.01) compared to the control group. In conclusion, the compliance with IFAS in the intervention group was 82.8%.

Abstract

Female adolescents are at a heightened risk of anemia due to inadequate iron intake and absorption, blood loss during menstruation, and an escalated need for iron to support rapid growth. This study examined the impact of nutrition education on the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls. The investigation was conducted through a systematic review and meta-analysis, employing articles from reputable sources such as Google Scholar, JAMA Network, PubMed, ScienceDirect, The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and ProQuest, published between 2013 and 2021. The keywords for data retrieval were"nutrition education" and "adolescent anemia girls." Furthermore, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline was used to select and organize publications for this study. Using Review Manager 5.3 Software, full-text articles meeting meta-analysis criteria were selected, resulting in 7 out of the 257 retrieved articles being included. The findings suggested that nutrition education indeed impacts the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls (p-value

Abstract

Passive smoking is a significant risk factor for stunting in children, highlighting the urgent need for effective public health measures. This study aimed to investigate the association between passive smoking and stunting in children aged 0 months-7 years. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple online databases, including PubMed, ProQuest, Science Direct, Willey Online Library, Sage Journal, Cambridge University Press, and Oxford Academic. The quality of included articles reporting observational studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) checklist, presenting data through narrative synthesis. Findings suggested that passive smoking significantly contributed to the risk of stunting in children. Most reviewed articles were from low-income countries and reported studies with various age groups, demographic characteristics, and self-reported measures. Establishing a causal relationship remains challenging, with 99% of these studies using a cross-sectional design. Based on these findings, further study into this relationship using more comprehensive study designs is necessary. Interventions for mothers and children experiencing stunting should also be prioritized to reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors.
