Abstract

Female sex workers carry out sexual transactions that pose a high risk to their health. They experience a high risk of health problems, especially transmission of sexually transmitted infections. There are various factors that female sex workers (FSW) carry out sexual transactions with frequent frequency, such as poverty, gender inequality, and limited access to productive assets. This study aims to determine the associated between the frequency of sex transactions and health risks. This research uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The population of this study was all female sexual workers (FSW), with a sample size of 162 taken by purposive sampling. The results of this study show that the majority of FSWs have had a sexual transaction frequency more than two times in the last week, amounting to 79.5%, with a prevalence of high health risks of 75.9%. Based on the multivariate test, it is known that the frequency of sexual transactions is associated with health risks after controlling for the variables age and length of time as a FSW with an Adjusted Odds Ratio of 3.467 (1.415-8.494). Health risks FSW who engage in sexual transactions more than two times have a risk of 3.467 (1.415-8.494) times experiencing high health risks compared to female sex workers who engage in sexual transactions less than two times after controlling for age and length of time as female sex workers. When carrying out work in sexual exploration, FSW should continue to use sexual protective equipment and carry out regular health checks, especially for sexually transmitted infections.

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding mothers often face various psychological challenges that can affect their ability to adapt to stress during breastfeeding. Social support and self-esteem are considered protective factors that play an important role in fostering resilience in breastfeeding mothers. However, studies integrating these two factors are scattered and not comprehensively structured. Purpose: To examine and analyze the relationship between social support and self-esteem on resilience in breastfeeding mothers. Method: This literature review examined national and international journal articles published between 2018 and 2025. Relevant articles were obtained through scientific databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, BMC Psychology, International Breastfeeding Journal, and Reproductive Health. The keywords used were social support, self-esteem, resilience, and breastfeeding mothers, and were then analyzed critically and thematically based on the research variables. Results: Social support and self-esteem are significantly associated with resilience in breastfeeding mothers. Social support plays a role in increasing feelings of security and emotional support, while self-esteem contributes to strengthening mothers' self-confidence and coping skills in dealing with stress during breastfeeding. The interaction between internal and external factors shapes maternal resilience dynamically and contextually. Conclusion: Social support and self-esteem are important components in building resilience in breastfeeding mothers. Resilience is not formed in isolation, but rather through the interaction of individual psychological resources and social environmental support. Suggestion: The development of contextual and sustainable interventions involving families, healthcare professionals, and peer communities is needed to strengthen the self-esteem and resilience of breastfeeding mothers.   Keywords: Breastfeeding Mothers; Resilience; Self-esteem; Social Support. Abstract

Masalah stunting bukan hanya tanggung jawab bidan desa saja.

Abstract

Background: Breast milk is the main source of nutrition for infants, and early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour after birth plays an important role in supporting the success of exclusive breastfeeding. Despite being recommended by the World Health Organization, early initiation of breastfeeding (EIB) coverage in Indonesia remains low. The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey noted that only 45.1% of infants received EIB, which is influenced by a lack of education, medical interventions during delivery, and unsupportive health facility policies. This highlights the importance of further examining the impact of IMD on breastfeeding success and overall infant health. Objectives: This article aims to to explore the impact of EIBF on breastfeeding patterns and infant health. Methods: This study is a literature review that uses a systematic approach with searches on Google Scholar and the PubMed database using the keywords ‘early initiation of breastfeeding’, ‘exclusive breastfeeding’, and ‘breastfeeding patterns’ (2020–2025). Article selection followed the PRISMA guidelines, starting with identification of 550 initial articles, followed by screening based on tittles and abstracts, resulting in 258 articles. The eligibility evaluation stage excluded 66 articles that could not be included in the criteria, resulting in six final articles for review. Results: Early initiation of breastfeeding is important for the success of exclusive breastfeeding and infant health. EIB increases maternal confidence, reduces early interventions, such as the use of formula, and stimulates the suckling reflex during the sensitive first 2 hours after birth. In addition, EIB supports milk production through the stimulation of the hormones prolactin and oxytocin. Skin contact during EIB helps maintain the baby's body temperature and prevents hypothermia. In addition to these physiological benefits, EIB strengthens the emotional bond between mothers and babies, which contributes to the long-term success of breastfeeding. Conclusion: EIBF provides significant benefits for infant health and development while supporting successful breastfeeding.

Abstract

Background: Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) are severe congenital disorders that can result in lifelong disabilities. These malformations are largely preventable through adequate folic acid intake before conception and during early pregnancy. However, in many settings, including Indonesia, pregnant women’s awareness and adherence to folic acid supplementation remain below optimal levels. Scientific evidence has long demonstrated that folic acid supports proper neural tube formation and lowers the risk of conditions such as spina bifida and anencephaly. However, there is limited discussion in existing reviews about contextual barriers, such as cultural perceptions, healthcare access, and policy limitations, that influence supplementation practices in low- and middle-income countries. This review aims to fill this gap by examining recent evidence on the preventive role of folic acid and exploring the factors that shape its effectiveness. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate and review the existing evidence on the role of folic acid consumption in preventing Neural Tube Defects (NTD) in pregnant women and to identify factors that influence its effectiveness. Methods: This review was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar with searches guided by standardized Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms: “Folic Acid,” “Pregnant Women,” and “Neural Tube Defects.” The selection process followed the PRISMA guidelines, applying the following criteria: publication between 2020 and 2024, availability of full-text articles, and a primary focus on the relationship between folic acid and NTD prevention in pregnant women. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. Results: The results of the six studies showed that folic acid deficiency significantly increased the risk of anencephaly and neural tube defects, whereas folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy reduced the incidence of NTDs. Adequate folic acid levels in pregnant women also reduce the risk of spina bifida, although knowledge and compliance with folic acid consumption among pregnant women remain low. The methodological quality varied from moderate to high, although several studies did not adequately control for confounding factors. Conclusion: Based on these findings, folic acid consumption is crucial for preventing NTDs. However, there is a need to improve education and compliance with folic acid consumption among pregnant women. Further research is required to understand the factors influencing compliance and to design more effective interventions to enhance awareness and implementation of folic acid consumption among pregnant women.

Abstract

The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus is high among female sex workers (FSWs) in Indonesia, underscoring the need for integrated prevention strategies supported by strong government policies. This study aimed to investigate FSWs' willingness to participate in a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) program. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with 20 participants residing in Pangkal Pinang City, Indonesia (4 stakeholders and 16 FSWs), recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected from July to September 2024. This non-probability sampling method was adopted due to the focus on specific study objectives and a targeted population. The analysis of the interviews revealed three theme clusters comprising eight themes. The identified clusters were government policy, knowledge of effectiveness and willingness to follow PrEP, and readiness for side effects and long-term compliance. Improving health services in areas where FSWs are concentrated is crucial for facilitating easier access with lower transportation costs. Furthermore, supporting the privacy of FSWs is crucial, and the cost of health screening before PrEP initiation should be waived to eliminate financial barriers and encourage participation in the PrEP program.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, including in Banyuasin Regency, which is a priority area for stunting prevention. Sungai Gerong Village in Banyuasin I District reports a relatively high prevalence of stunting among children under five. This study aimed to explore the determinants of stunting in this village. A qualitative descriptive design was employed to examine behavioral and environmental factors contributing to stunting. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 key informants, including four health workers and community leaders and six mothers of stunted toddlers. The study explored environmental conditions, child feeding practices, parenting patterns, and household food security. Dietary intake was assessed using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and household food security was measured using the Food Consumption Score (FCS).The findings revealed that most toddlers lived in inadequate environmental conditions and consumed predominantly high-carbohydrate diets with low intake of vegetables and animal protein. Three households were classified as food insecure. Parenting practices were suboptimal, particularly regarding appropriate feeding practices and cognitive stimulation. Poor sanitation, limited dietary diversity, inadequate caregiving practices, and restricted household food access were identified as key contributing factors. These findings suggest that stunting in Sungai Gerong Village is driven by multidimensional factors requiring integrated interventions. Policy and practical efforts should focus on strengthening nutrition education for caregivers, improving sanitation infrastructure, enhancing access to diverse and affordable nutritious foods, and reinforcing community-based nutrition services. Cross-sectoral collaboration is essential to sustainably reduce stunting prevalence in this area.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is a persistent public health challenge in Indonesia, particularly among adolescent girls, with prevalence reaching 48.9% in 2018. Despite school-based iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation programs, major implementation challenges remain. Objective: To evaluate the implementation of IFA policies for adolescents in Indonesia and to identify global strategies that can strengthen national anemia prevention efforts. Method: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, focusing on studies published between 2019 and 2024. PubMed, Google Scholar, and official Ministry of Health sources were searched using predefined eligibility criteria. Data from eligible studies were synthesized using thematic analysis. Search strings included terms such as: “iron and folic acid supplementation” OR “iron–folic acid” OR “IFA”, combined with “adolescent” OR “school-age girls”, and “policy” OR “program implementation” OR “coverage” OR “adherence”. Results: Five studies met the inclusion criteria. Four main barriers to effective IFA implementation were identified: (1) low adherence due to side effects and misconceptions; (2) logistical weaknesses in tablet distribution; (3) limited stakeholder engagement; and (4) lack of robust monitoring systems. Evidence from other countries shows that school-based education, digital monitoring, and community involvement can improve coverage and compliance. Conclusion: Indonesia’s IFA policy needs strengthening in both structural and behavioral domains. Integrating education, digital tracking, and peer involvement into existing school-based programs may enhance adherence and long-term sustainability.
