Abstract

Globally, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death, and the number of cases continues to increase along with world population growth, population aging and modern lifestyles. The prevalence of cancer in 2024 will still be influenced by many factors, including lifestyle, diet, environmental exposure, and advances in cancer detection and treatment. Currently, a lot of research related to alternative cancer therapy focuses on the use of natural product as anticancer agents that are more selective, effective, and with lower side effects. This article review aims to provide information regarding the patchouli plant (Pogostemon cablin) and its potential as an anticancer agent. This review was carried out by collecting literature from various databases published in the last 10 years (2014 – 2024). Based on literature searches, P. cablin is known to have anticancer activity against endometrial, ovarian, liver, skin, nasopharyngeal, prostate, blood, colorectal and lung cancer.

Abstract

Forest honey is a natural product derived from the nectar of wild plants and is known to contain various bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids and phenolics, which contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. Buton Regency in Southeast Sulawesi is recognized as a producer of forest honey; however, scientific studies on its biological activities remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the free radical scavenging activity and anti-inflammatory effects of Buton forest honey through both in vitro and in vivo approaches. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH and ABTS assays, while anti-inflammatory evaluation involved inhibition of BSA protein denaturation and a mouse ear edema model induced by xylene. The honey exhibited IC₅₀ values of 71.69 ± 2.73 mg/L (DPPH) and 49.23 ± 4.24 mg/L (ABTS). Its protein denaturation inhibition showed an IC₅₀ of 14.17 ± 3.18 mg/L. In vivo testing demonstrated that high-dose honey significantly reduced ear thickness in mice, with a percentage of inhibition comparable to diclofenac sodium. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) across most parameters. These findings indicate that Buton forest honey holds promise as a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

Abstract

Lantana camara L. is a tropical plant from the Verbenaceae family that is widely known for its invasive nature, but also has high ethnomedicinal value. This study aims to examine the phytochemical profile and potential pharmacological activities of L. camara plants based on the latest scientific data. The study method uses a literature study approach to scientific literature from the Scopus database in the period 2015–2025 with keywords related to the phytochemistry and pharmacology of L. camara. The collected data were analyzed descriptively to identify the main bioactive compounds and their biological activities. The results of the study indicate that L. camara contains triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics, and iridoid glycosides that play an important role in various pharmacological activities, including antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective. Compounds such as ursolic acid, lantadene A and B, and quercetin-3-O-glucoside are reported to have significant biological effects through different molecular mechanisms. Furthermore, the potential use of L. camara in nanoparticle synthesis shows broad application prospects in the pharmaceutical and industrial fields. In conclusion, L. camara is a promising natural bioactive source for modern drug development and sustainable therapeutic applications.

Abstract

Hiperurisemia merupakan faktor utama penyebab gout yang berkaitan dengan peningkatan kadar asam urat akibat produksi berlebih maupun gangguan ekskresi. Enzim xanthine oxidase (XO) berperan penting dalam pembentukan asam urat sehingga menjadi target utama dalam terapi gout. Review ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis tanaman obat yang memiliki aktivitas penghambatan enzim xanthine oxidase (XO) serta potensi terapinya dalam penanganan hiperurisemia dan gout. Pencarian literatur dilakukan menggunakan metode literature review dengan menelusuri artikel yang dipublikasikan pada periode 2020- 2025. Database yang digunakan meliputi Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, dan Google Scholar. Artikel yang diseleksi membahas aktivitas penghambatan XO oleh tanaman obat berdasarkan uji in vitro dan in vivo. Sebanyak 23 tanaman obat teridentifikasi memiliki aktivitas penghambatan XO yang signifikan. Senyawa aktif seperti chrysin (Piper sarmentosum), limonene (Pistacia chinensis), andrographolide (Andrographis paniculata), dan morin (Maclura cochinchinensis) menunjukkan potensi tinggi, bahkan pada beberapa studi melebihi allopurinol. Mekanisme kerja tanaman obat tidak hanya melalui inhibisi XO langsung, tetapi juga melibatkan modulasi transporter asam urat ginjal seperti URAT1, GLUT9, OAT1, dan ABCG2. Selain itu, aktivitas antioksidan dan anti-inflamasi melalui penekanan jalur NF-κB dan NLRP3 turut berkontribusi, yang sering disertai dengan efek perlindungan ginjal dan hati. Dengan mekanisme kerja yang bersifat multi-target dan profil keamanan yang lebih baik, tanaman obat berpotensi menjadi alternatif terapi gout, meskipun uji klinis lanjutan masih diperlukan.

Abstract

Forest honey is a natural product rich in bioactive compounds, particularly phenolics and flavonoids, which contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. East Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi, is recognized as a potential source of forest honey; however, scientific data regarding its biological activity remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of forest honey from East Kolaka using in vitro and in vivo approaches. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH, ABTS, and β-carotene bleaching assays, while anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated through inhibition of nitric oxide production in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells and a xylene-induced mouse ear edema model. The results demonstrated notable antioxidant activity, with IC₅₀ values of 68.16 ± 1.18 mg/L (DPPH), 56.36 ± 3.72 mg/L (ABTS), and 4.11 ± 0.66 mg/L (BCB). Additionally, the honey significantly suppressed nitric oxide production in vitro and reduced ear edema in vivo, with the highest dose showing comparable effectiveness to sodium diclofenac. These findings indicate that East Kolaka forest honey has promising potential for development as a functional food or nutraceutical derived from local natural resources.
