Abstract

Improving the quality of education in schools requires a sustainable and participatory strategy. Kaizen, known as a philosophy of continuous improvement in the industrial world, has the potential to be applied in the educational context. This study aims to explore how Kaizen principles can be adapted as a strategy to improve the quality of education in schools. Through a qualitative case study of an Integrated Islamic School that combines science and Islamic values, this study reveals that the implementation of Kaizen principles supported by the 5S concept, collective participation (teachers, students, and parents), effective leadership, regular evaluation, continuous improvement, and collaboration positively influences work culture and enhances the quality of educational services. These outcomes are facilitated through the use of PDCA, Gemba Walk, Kaizen Event, and the Suggestion System. The conclusion of this study suggests that Kaizen can be an effective strategy in creating an adaptive, participatory, and continuous improvement-oriented education system.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation of the System of Internal Quality Assurance (SIQA) in planning the Internal Quality Assurance System of Higher Education (SPMI-PT) based on W. Edwards Deming's 14 Principles at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis of curriculum, human resources, facilities, learning processes, and budgeting. Findings indicate that SIQA strengthens institutional quality culture and academic planning by integrating curriculum data, monitoring learning, and digitizing quality documentation. Deming’s principles are evident in constancy of purpose through Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLOs) and continuous improvement via semester-based evaluation cycles. While transparent assessments help drive out fear, increased administrative workloads remain a challenge for lecturers. SIQA-supported data integration further enhances evidence-based decision-making in budgeting and performance evaluations. Ultimately, SIQA acts as a catalyst, transforming quality planning from a manual, reactive process into a proactive, digital system. This study contributes empirically to applying Deming's principles within digital-based quality assurance in higher education.

Abstract

This study examines the low level of adolescent participation in utilizing technology-based public services in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKJ), despite the implementation of the Jakarta Smart City (JSC) initiative since 2014. Limited engagement among young citizens indicates a gap between smart city development and public education effectiveness, particularly in fostering smart people for sustainable urban governance. The study employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the Gall, Gall, and Borg framework. The unit of analysis consists of adolescents aged 10–19 years residing in Pulo Gadung District, East Jakarta. A proportional random sampling technique was applied, yielding 397 respondents from a target population of 43,760 adolescents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with WarpPLS to examine the relationships among smart city maturity, public education management, and adolescent participation. The study develops and validates a smart city maturity measurement instrument, a public education management instrument, and an urban environmental management model oriented toward a sustainable global smart city. Additionally, training modules and Training of Trainers (TOT) programs based on the smart people concept are produced to strengthen youth engagement. This research contributes by providing empirically grounded instruments and models to support evidence-based policies and enhance adolescent participation in smart city ecosystems.

Abstract

Kata kunci: total quality management, budaya mutu, pendidikan tinggi, penjaminan mutu, manajemen pendidikan Abstract: This study analyzes the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in strengthening a quality culture in the Faculty of Education. The adoption of TQM in higher education is increasingly recognized as a strategic framework for developing an integrated management system that emphasizes continuous improvement, stakeholder satisfaction, and the active involvement of all organizational members. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study collected data through semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and document analysis involving faculty leaders, program coordinators, lecturers, and administrative staff. The findings indicate that key TQM principles—such as systematic planning, standardization, and continuous evaluation—have been implemented through internal quality assurance policies, professional development programs for lecturers, and digital monitoring mechanisms. These efforts have contributed to improved transparency, efficiency, and consistency in academic and administrative processes. Nevertheless, several challenges remain, including uneven internalization of quality values across units, communication gaps among organizational levels, and varying levels of participation in quality assurance activities. To address these challenges, the study recommends strengthening transformational leadership, expanding the digital quality management system, and increasing stakeholder engagement to build a more sustainable and cohesive quality culture. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on TQM implementation in higher education institutions. Abstract

Mandarin proficiency is an essential 21st-century skill. However, current instructional materials and partnerships with DUDI must be improved to develop students' practical communication abilities. This article analyzes the Business and Industrial World (DUDI) relevance by improving Mandarin communication skills for vocational high school students to enhance their employability. Literature reviews of data from the Central Statistics Agency and analysis of government regulations were conducted to formulate a conceptual framework. The framework underlines the need for a competency-based curriculum, contextual teaching materials, and collaborative training programs between schools and companies in the field of Mandarin language. Students' listening and speaking abilities need particular improvement to meet professional communication demands. On the other hand, collaboration between SMK and DUDI has been minimal, mostly limited to internship programs without substantive cooperation in curriculum or materials development. DUDI plays a vital role in formulating competency standards tailored to industry needs. The materials should be competency-based and interactive and encourage active communication skills. Trials of such tailor-made curricula have confirmed improved language performance in class. This model needs to be expanded to more SMK nationwide. Thus, increased synergy in customizing Mandarin training to DUDI requirements promises to bolster the competitiveness and absorption of graduates. This will ultimately support national economic productivity through better-skilled human resources.
