Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of the Guided Discovery Blended Learning (GDBL) strategy on concept mastery of the human excretory system. The research method was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest control group design. The samples consisted of the eleventh-grade students of Senior High school Jakarta in 2019/2020. Class MIPA-2 was the control class taught using Guided Discovery, and class MIPA-4 were the experimental class taught using GDBL. The learning process had been carried out both online and in the classroom. Research data were collected by integrating essay tests, students' responses to learning strategies, and observation sheets of syntax implementation. The data were descriptively analyzed and tested using ANCOVA. The normality test was performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov formula, and the homogeneity test was performed using Levene's test. The statistical tests indicated that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous; thus, ANCOVA analysis using SPSS 24 was performed. The data analysis with the ANCOVA test at 0,05 significance level obtained p value = 0.000, which means that H0 was rejected. The research result implied that GDBL affected students' concept mastery of the human excretory system. It cultivated habits to independently rearrange the concept through teachers' guidance, both from sourcebooks and online media. GDBL can be used as an alternative for biology studies.

Abstract

Critical and creative thinking skills are two essential aspects in 21st century learning. A simultaneous development of both skills can encourage students to find a correct, varied, and adaptive solution to a problem. This study identifies the influence of the unification of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) with the Reading, Mind mapping, and Sharing (RMS) on students' critical and creative thinking. The PBL and RMS are learning models that have complementary characteristics; therefore, they can be combined in a more effective learning strategy. The research method employs quasi-experimental research with non-equivalent pretest-post-test control groups design.  The research population includes students in Class XI MIPA in 2024/2025 academic year. The sampling uses a simple random sampling technique of 62 students. The research instruments consist of test and non-test instruments comprising 11 and 7 items of essay questions to measure critical thinking skills and creative thinking skills, respectively. The non-test instruments include a Student Worksheet and an observation sheet as secondary data. The pre-requisite test results in normally distributed and homogeneous data. The results of hypothesis test, MANOVA (p<0,05), indicate that the treatment of the unification of PBL with RMS influences student critical and creative thinking skills with a significance value of 0,001 and 0,002, respectively. The implementation of the unification of the PBL with RMS is proven to have a significant influence on student critical and creative thinking skills.

Abstract

Learning is a form of communication that is the basis for achieving information by students. The learning model that can improve students' activeness and learning outcomes is Problem Based Learning (PBL). The relevance found between the principles of the PBL model and the Biology learning process makes many studies linking the application of PBL with the achievement of cognitive learning outcomes. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on cognitive learning outcomes in biology using quantitative methods with meta-analysis techniques by reviewing 15 journal articles. The effectiveness of the PBL model on cognitive learning outcomes used the Effect Size (ES) formula. Based on the results obtained from the Effect Size test, the results obtained with moderate criteria ranged from 0.51 to 1.00 so it means that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model has a positive impact on biology learning outcomes for students.

Abstract

Natural science learning during the Covid-19 pandemic has quite a high challenge because students and teachers cannot learn directly. Knowing the effectiveness of using Google-site as a material and media for student learning during distance learning to improve student learning outcomes is the aim of this study. This research was conducted at SMP PGRI 1 Karang Tengah Tangerang in grade 8. Purposive sampling was carried out for sampling in this study, so that class 8-E was the experimental class and class 8-E was the control class. The results showed that the use of Google-site as teaching materials and learning media was feasible. The use of Google-site as teaching materials and learning media has no significant effect seen from the Mann Whitney test of 0.419. The average N-gain test obtained from the control class was 0.029, while the experimental class was 0.051. The comparison of the mean value of the control class pretest and posttest was 1.4 points, while the average score of the ecaperimen class was 3 points. Based on this, it can be concluded that the use of Google-site as a material and media for student learning during distance learning can be used to improve student learning outcomes. However, several revisions are needed so that teaching materials and media are more effective in improving student learning outcomes independently.

Abstract

Rapid development and increasing population growth affect river water quality, including the Ciliwung River. The decline in the water quality of the Ciliwung River is caused by organic waste originating from households, industry, livestock, and agriculture, so efforts are being made to manage the water using phytoremediation. Pistia stratiotes and Salvinia molesta are aquatic plants that can absorb heavy metals in polluted water. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of plants Pistia stratiotes and Salvinia molesta in reducing the Ciliwung River's wastewater level. This type of research is laboratory-scale experimental with RAL in 3 treatments (A, B, and C) and 6 replications. Data were analyzed using the ANOVA test with the DMRT further test. The results of the research showed that the treatment of two types of plants had a significant effect on reducing the level of water turbidity with the greatest reduction rate being found in plants Salvinia molesta. The fastest change in color and reduction in the number of leaves occurs in plants Pistia stratiotes, and the levels of AAS contaminants before and after treatment cannot be detected because the detection limit of the smallest limit test parameter possessed by a tool/instrument for measuring a certain number of analytes is different.
