Abstract

Academic writing in higher education mainly focuses on writing for publication. The success of writing for publication depends on the learners’ ability to access, understand the relevant references, evaluate, and synthesise the ideas, opinions, and sentences to make their academic pattern. Viewed from prior studies, it seems that many EFL learners have faced various problems in writing their academic papers, specifically writing for publication. To respond to this issue, this narrative inquiry aims to investigate (1) how learners acquire their knowledge in writing for publication, (2) the difficulties they face in writing for publication, and (3) how they face those difficulties. This present study intended to dig up the experiences of two graduate students of English Education major in writing for publication. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. Then, the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. This study shows that the participants acquired knowledge and experiences from various sources that were useful for writing their academic papers. Surprisingly, the various difficulties they faced motivated them to learn more and improve their writing skills for publication. Pedagogical and future research implications are further discussed.

Abstract

This research scrutinized the students' perception of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the teaching and learning process. A qualitative approach as a primary framework was employed with a case study method. Twenty students were involved in this research. The information was gathered through questionnaires and interviews. Of the twenty participants, only three participated in the interview session. The results reveal that most students gave tremendous perceptions of CLIL implementation, understanding the teachers’ instructions, being comfortable at some point in the class, and enriching their vocabulary. The findings of the study are envisioned to bring light to other teachers to reflect and develop themselves. Moreover, the study aimed to contribute to the schools’ policy-making, which means undertaking the CLIL program.

The purpose of this research is to explore the teacher’s belief about TPACK in teaching writing during the Covid-19 pandemic era. It is in regards to content, technology, and pedagogy that in-service EFL teachers reflect appropriate technology integration and proper teaching strategy that support teaching writing during the Covid-19 pandemic era. This case study used semi-structured interviews and artefact analysis. Three in-service EFL teachers participated in this study. Although there were significant differences in their practical views, this study found how teachers elaborate their belief about in teaching writing, i.e. utilizing familiar smartphones apps, engaging content-based curriculum, and applying student-oriented teaching method. Moreover, the study confirms previous findings of the importance of TPACK in the EFL context. The study highlights the need for the acknowledgement of practical ways in classroom practice of the TPACK framework in teaching writing. Finally, this study might have implications for educational institutions to provide a better improvement in the future.

Abstract

Independent learning is one of the important aspects of solving Mathematics learning problems. The novelty of this research is the independence of students in solving mathematics learning problems in elementary schools during post-pandemic era. The purpose of this study is to describe the elementary students' independence in solving Mathematics learning problems in the post-COVID-19 pandemic. This research approach is qualitative with a case study design. The research was conducted in sixth-grade students of SDN 01 Papahan Karanganyar. Data collection used interviews, observation, and documentation techniques. The researcher tested validity data with technical and source triangulation. The data analysis used interactive analysis techniques, namely data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusions. The results showed that most of the students were able to solve mathematical problems in the post-COVID-19 pandemic independently, marked by: 74.07% of students can understand their problems, 92.59% of students could plan their problem solving, 77.78% of students could solve their problems correctly and systematically, and 77.78% of students could re-check the results of solving their problems. The research implies that students who can solve mathematical problems independently will use the knowledge, skills, and experience gained to achieve optimal learning outcomes and use their mindset to solve problems in everyday life without relying on the help of others.

Abstract

Reflective practice is essential for teachers’ professional development. It leads teacher to shape and reshape their knowledge, and so forth a wide range of benefits can be achieved. However, to gain such benefits, teachers must have good quality of reflective practice. This qualitative case study aimed at investigating quality of reflective practice of four female EFL pre-service teachers in Indonesia. Framed with qualitative case study, this study employed online reflective journals as the main instrument to collect the data. The data were analysed deductively using content analysis. The results revealed that participants’ reflection tended to remain in the level of D1 and D2 which meant that they had tendency to merely retell and describe their teaching practice with limited evaluation. Only few of them were captured to reflect on the level of R1 and R2. In sum, although Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers had tendency to reflect in low level, it was interesting to find the fact that they sometimes reflected more critically in the level of R1 and R2. The result could be used as indicator that Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers had ability to reflect in a good way. Thus, following actions by related parties should be established in order to develop their abilities.

Abstract

Top-down teacher professional development in Indonesia prevents teachers from choosing and determining programs or activities that suit their interests, goals, and needs; however, some activities can assist teachers in developing it, known as self-initiated professional development (SiPD). SiPD demonstrates that people who take the initiative learn more and better than those who are passively taught with or without the assistance of others. This research investigated novice EFL teachers’ perceptions and the types of SiPD they engaged in. This study employed a narrative inquiry approach using semi-structured interviews as data collection. The study involved three EFL teachers selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. The findings of this study are that novice EFL teachers regard and comprehend self-initiated professional development positively as responsible professionals seeking to acquire new skills, knowledge, and pedagogy to better prepare for their profession’s obstacles and improve their student’s performance and achievement. They became proactive learners, taking control of their education and taking the initiative to develop their teaching abilities. Furthermore, self-initiated professional development ensured that EFL teachers were current on the newest teaching trends, techniques, and resources.

Schools provide understanding to students to avoid disruptive behavior. Teachers have strategies to deal with disruptive student behavior in the classroom. This study aims to describe teacher strategies in dealing with student disruptive behavior and reveal students' preferences for teacher strategies in dealing with disruptive behavior of the first grade at a public elementary school in Baki. This type of research is qualitative using a case study approach in an elementary school so that the subject of the study is teachers and students. This research data are information about teacher strategies in dealing with student disruptive behavior and students’ preferences toward teacher strategies in dealing with disruptive behavior in the classroom. The data sources used are students and teachers. Data collection techniques used were observation and interviews. Meanwhile, the data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s model consisting of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that teachers used several strategies to deal with students' disruptive behaviour, including classroom management, taking individual approaches, behavior management, understanding student characteristics, and teaching social skills. The strategies that students prefer are classroom management, individual approach, and behavior management. Disruptive behavior of students during learning can be reduced if the teacher has an effective strategy and that strategy becomes the student's preference.

Abstract

Adequate pragmatic competence, or the ability to use language in a social context appropriately, is essential for successful communication, particularly across cultures and societies. Many previous studies in appropriateness focused on speech act production, pragmatic development, and rater evaluations, but only a few investigated pragmatic comprehension. Therefore, this current research attempts to investigate EFL learners' comprehension of the appropriateness of criticism speech acts and the foundation that EFL learners consider in evaluating appropriateness. This study involved 20 EFL learners as participants. The study used a questionnaire with DCTs and open-ended questions to elicit the data. The findings revealed that EFL learners could understand the appropriateness of criticism speech acts They could indicate which utterances were associated with appropriateness or inappropriateness by considering various criteria such as politeness, power and social distance, linguistic forms, strategies, intentions, reasoning, and settings. This research has implications for English learning in that teachers should promote appropriateness as an important aspect of pragmatic competence to EFL learners so that they can use language appropriately to communicate in the target language.
