Abstract

This study aimed to analyze in depth the students' independent thinking ability in solving combination problems in combinatorics material. The research method used was a qualitative case study, involving 24 high school students in grade XI who were selected purposively based on the criteria of never having studied the concept of combination formally and never having faced similar problems. The research instrument consisted of specially designed combination story problems and semi-structured interview guidelines to explore students' cognitive processes. Analysis was carried out on four aspects of ability, namely: (1) the ability to state problems in other forms, (2) the ability to form a solution strategy, (3) the ability to apply strategies for solving, and (4) the ability to verify the results obtained. The results of the study stated: (1) problems were stated in the form of number symbols and diagrams, using narrative sentences, drawing circles, forming sets, and using symbols B1 to B6; (2) the solution strategies used included: counting with the help of symbols, counting directly without symbols, and counting alternately; (3) solutions were found by using a variable symbol and set approach; (4) no students verified their solution results. These findings confirmed that although the majority of students demonstrated independent thinking in problem-solving and strategy development, only a small proportion consistently implemented the strategy, and none verified the results. The implications of this research could serve as a reference for designing more effective learning strategies to develop students' independent thinking skills in mathematics, particularly in combinatorics. Abstract

Ethnomathematics examines the intersection of mathematics and culture, highlighting how mathematical concepts are embedded within local traditions. In culturally rich Indonesia, ethnomathematics holds increasing relevance. This study examines the presence of mathematical principles in traditional ceremonies, revealing their integration into various cultural elements, including clothing, dances, tools, and rituals. This study employs a systematic literature review (SLR) using the PRISMA approach to analyze 27 articles published between 2018 and 2024. Articles were selected through a structured search and screening process based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection focused on identifying mathematical concepts in traditional ceremonies, while thematic analysis was used to categorize ethnomathematical patterns in Indonesian cultural practices. Findings highlight common patterns, such as geometric shapes, measurement techniques, and symmetry, which are evident in artifacts, traditional attire, and ceremonial practices. Additionally, the study underscores the variation in mathematical applications across different regions, reflecting Indonesia’s cultural diversity. These insights have significant implications for developing a more contextual and relevant mathematics education. By connecting mathematical concepts with local culture, ethnomathematics enhances student engagement and understanding, making learning more meaningful and culturally grounded. This approach not only enriches mathematical education but also helps preserve and appreciate Indonesia’s unique cultural heritage, promoting a more inclusive and diverse educational framework.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the epistemological obstacles encountered by junior high school students when solving PISA-based mathematical literacy problems on the topic of System of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SLETV), viewed from the perspective of PISA competency levels. The research seeks to contribute to the development of more effective mathematics instruction. This study is deemed essential because epistemological obstacles can hinder students' ability to apply mathematical concepts in real-world contexts an ability that is central to international assessments such as PISA. A qualitative approach was employed through Didactical Design Research (DDR), involving 23 ninth-grade students. Data were collected through a written test consisting of a mathematical literacy problem adapted from PISA items, and supported by interviews and classroom observations. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods, focusing on students’ thinking processes and emerging error patterns. The findings reveal that students encounter various epistemological obstacles across all PISA competency levels (1b to 6), such as conceptual misconceptions, procedural errors, and difficulties in translating contextual information. At the lower levels (1b–3), students struggled to formulate basic algebraic models and perform arithmetic operations. At the higher levels (4–6), they experienced challenges in handling complex calculations, verifying solutions, and applying reasoning in abstract or multi-step situations. These obstacles stem from fragmented prior knowledge, limited exposure to contextual problems, and a lack of reflective habits. This study highlights the importance of integrating authentic real-world problems, providing systematic scaffolding, and fostering continuous self-verification practices in instructional design. The findings offer practical insights for developing targeted pedagogical interventions to enhance students' mathematical literacy and better prepare them to tackle SLETV problems in contexts similar to those featured in PISA.

Abstract

The focus of the PISA 2022 assessment is on the subjects of Mathematics, Language and Science. Therefore, these subjects are compulsory subjects at every level of education. Because learning activities are the most important activities, the success of a learning activity is measured by the learning outcomes that have reached completeness or failed. Prediction of completeness or failure can be done by classifying data using the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm using the RapidMiner application. The KNN algorithm is one of the classification methods for a set of data based on learning data that has been classified before. The data used are student learning outcomes in Mathematics, Indonesian Language and Science subjects at the junior high school education level in Padang city. This research aims to predict student learning outcomes in Mathematics, Indonesian and Science subjects based on student score completeness by comparing various k values to obtain the best performance of this algorithm. The results obtained after analyzing the KNN algorithm are Classification using the KNN algorithm is most accurate when the value of k = 5 and k = 7. Where by using the value of k, the accuracy of the KNN algorithm reaches the maximum result of 94.12%. Thus, this algorithm can help teachers to predict or find out how appropriate student completeness.
