Abstract

Student academic achievement in the form of Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the measures to assess the quality of learning. Not only are individual cognitive factors a determinant of students' high GPAs, but other non-cognitive factors can affect GPA achievement. Therefore, this study aims to examine the factors that influence academic achievement, as measured by GPA. This study was a descriptive quantitative study involving 63 mathematics education student respondents, to identify the factors that influence the GPA achievement of students in the mathematics education study program. The data was analyzed descriptively and tested using a decision tree. Based on the decision tree algorithm, the results showed that learning methods were the dominant factor in classifying student GPA achievements, specifically whether the GPA of 3.50 or higher or less than 3.50. Students with a GPA of 3.50 or higher tend to benefit positively from discussion-based learning methods, while those with a GPA of less than 3.50 tend to engage more with traditional learning approaches. In addition to learning methods, factors such as the reason for choosing the study program, parents’ educational background, and the duration of independent study time also contribute to strengthening or weakening students’ GPA achievements. In the model evaluation results, the decision tree algorithm showed good predictive performance, demonstrating its effectiveness in classifying students based on their GPA achievement levels. Therefore, the results of this study can serve as a reference for educators and educational institutions to design more effective pedagogical strategies that not only strengthen cognitive skills but also foster the holistic development of students in mathematics education programs.    Keywords: classification, decision tree, grade point average, mathematics education.

Abstract

Comprehension skills are essential in mathematics learning, as students' understanding is influenced by various internal and external factors. Recognizing these factors is crucial for educators to design effective teaching strategies. This study aims to classify and predict students' mathematical comprehension based on gender, attitude, learning styles, and self-confidence. A total of 53 eleventh-grade students from SMA Negeri 8 Ternate participated. Primary data were analyzed using data mining techniques—specifically, classification and prediction using the Decision Tree method via Orange Data Mining software. The analysis identified learning style as the most influential factor in students’ mathematical comprehension. The Decision Tree's root node represented comprehension data from 31 students, of which 19 students (61.3%) were classified as having understood the material. The internal node revealed two branches: students with an auditory learning style (8 students) showed a 100% understanding rate, whereas students with kinesthetic or visual styles (11 students) demonstrated a 47.8% understanding rate. The model's prediction accuracy based on the four attributes was 65%. Findings highlight the significance of tailoring instruction to students' learning styles. The relationship between visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning preferences—when considered alongside gender, attitude, and self-confidence—can offer valuable insights into learning patterns. This study provides a practical reference for educators in developing effective and personalized teaching methods. By leveraging insights into learning styles and associated factors, instructional approaches can be optimized for improved mathematical comprehension.

Abstract

The concept of area is fundamental to geometry and essential for applications in various fields, including physics, engineering, and data analysis. This study examines the gap between mathematicians’ views on area and its presentation in Indonesian and Japanese elementary textbooks, as well as its impact on student learning. Using the Anthropological Theory of Didactics and a qualitative phenomenological design, the analysis focuses on chapters discussing the area, applying a three-stage content analysis to identify conceptual components, formula presentations, shape variations, and task types. This analysis is supported by quantitative indicators, such as the task variation index and proportions of exploratory versus procedural tasks. The findings indicate that Japanese textbooks employ a more systematic and comprehensive didactic approach, offering a range of tasks, exploratory methods, and logical sequencing that promote independent learning. In contrast, Indonesian textbooks rely on repetitive, limited cut-and-paste methods, which may lead to a rigid understanding and learning obstacles. The study suggests the need for a critical evaluation of textbooks and more conceptually coherent learning designs, aligned with mathematical principles. It recommends task designs that integrate exploration and reasoning, consistent formula derivation, and broader variations of shapes to reduce learning barriers.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores junior high school students’ numeracy skills in solving AKM-equivalent algebra problems based on their learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Using a qualitative case study design, nine students were selected through a learning style questionnaire and a numeracy test. Data were gathered using tests, interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that students with different learning styles demonstrate distinct strengths and challenges at each cognitive level (knowing, applying, and reasoning). High-proficiency students were able to solve problems across all levels, often using strategies aligned with their learning preferences. Moderate-proficiency students commonly faced difficulties in applying-level tasks due to conceptual misunderstandings, while low-proficiency students struggled across all levels, particularly with comprehension and focus. Despite these difficulties, students employed various successful strategies such as sketching, verbalizing, or imagining scenarios. The study highlights the importance of adaptive instruction that integrates learning style-based strategies. Practical recommendations are provided for educators to design inclusive numeracy instruction that enhances students’ mathematical understanding and problem-solving abilities.
