Abstract

Mathematics education in Indonesia faces significant challenges, as reflected in the low performance of students in various international assessments. Traditional teaching methods, which are less interactive, are considered one of the key factors contributing to students' low problem-solving abilities in mathematics. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the impact of Polya's heuristic model on students' mathematical learning outcomes and determine the extent to which this strategy can enhance students' learning abilities compared to conventional teaching methods. The study employs a meta-analytic approach, integrating data from 15 primary studies conducted between 2014 and 2023, and uses statistical analysis to calculate the average effect size of the implementation of Polya's heuristic model in mathematics education. The findings reveal a significant improvement in students' mathematical learning outcomes using Polya's heuristic model, with an average effect size of 1.13, categorized as "very high." The study suggests that the application of Polya's heuristic model is significantly more effective in enhancing students' mathematical learning outcomes than conventional teaching methods. The practical implication is that educators and policymakers in Indonesia could consider adopting this strategy in curricula and teacher training programs to improve the quality of mathematics education.

Abstract

One of the most important skills in mathematics is mathematical representation, which is the ability to develop and represent mathematical concepts in symbols. However, most students have difficulties in developing mathematical ideas in this form. This research aims to improve students"™ mathematical representation ability by using the jigsaw learning model and the student facilitator and explaining learning model. The two learning models are compared to see which is more effective in increasing students"™ mathematical representation skills. This research is a quasi-experimental method performed at a senior high school in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province. A random sampling technique was used and two groups were compared, with the experimental group-1 treated with the jigsaw learning model and the experimental group-2 with the student facilitator and explaining learning model. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, and tests as the instruments. An Independent t-test sample was used in data processing and analysis. The research findings identified that the students of the jigsaw learning model have a significantly higher mathematical representation ability compared to those of the facilitator and explaining learning model. Based on this finding, it is concluded that the jigsaw learning model is more effective in developing and representing mathematical ideas in symbols.

Abstract

One of the psychological aspects of students that encourages students' mathematical representation abilities is self-efficacy. This article is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 22 research published until October 2022 with the help of the Publish or Perish (PoP) application with the Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. SLR can be useful for finding research gaps from previous research. This article aims to; (1) investigate the period, index, research approach, subject matter, and subject demographics heterogeneity from 22 inclusion articles, (2) description of mathematical representation abilities in terms of self-efficacy, and (3) learning methods/approaches/strategies that can enhance self-efficacy, as well as the ability of mathematical representation. The results of the SLR research show that students with low self-efficacy have limitations in mathematical representations such as the majority involving a single representation, difficulty understanding the meaning of the questions, and lack understanding of material concepts. The ability of students' mathematical representation with moderate levels of self-efficacy experienced several problems such as difficult to solve problems, less accurate calculations, and dominantly showed moderate mathematical representation abilities. Meanwhile, students with dominant high self-efficacy also show high mathematical representation abilities. For future researchers, it is recommended to conduct research on this topic at the elementary school level, research locations outside Java Island, as well as trigonometry material.

Abstract

Mathematics research often focuses only on students' learning outcomes without considering their emotional aspects. This study aims to describe the tendency of students' sentiment toward mathematics in general and partially based on mathematics learning outcome groups, namely high, medium, and low. In addition, a mood analysis was conducted using Ekman's Basic Emotion classification. Data collection techniques are questionnaires and documentation. The questionnaire contains open questions about students' opinions on mathematics and closed to queries for student demographics. Documentation is done by collecting test scores from student grade books. This study used a descriptive method with data in the form of 72 comments from grade XI high school students in Bandung City, which were analyzed using the Orange Application Sentiment Analysis. The results of the study showed that (1) student sentiment was generally dominated by positive sentiment at 72.22%, (2) positive sentiment also dominated the groups of students with high, medium, and low learning outcomes, with a percentage of more than 68%, and (3) the results of the classification of emotions based on Ekman's Basic Emotion indicated that "joy" was the most dominant emotion, while "anger" had the lowest frequency of occurrence. This study provides new insights regarding students' emotional aspects in mathematics learning, which can be used to improve teaching strategies.

Abstract

The mathematical literacy skills of Indonesian students, as reflected in the PISA results, continue to be a concern because of their poor performance. Students with high mathematical disposition and high self-efficacy are often more proficient in mathematical literacy. This study aimed to examine how mathematical disposition and self-efficacy affect students’ mathematical literacy skills. This study employed a quantitative approach with a nonexperimental design and adopted a causal associative methodology. Data collection involved administering mathematical disposition and self-efficacy questionnaires, along with a mathematical literacy test, to 56 junior high school students. The analysis was performed using structural equation modeling-partial least squares (SEM-PLS) in the JASP 0.18.3.0 application. The results showed that mathematical disposition significantly enhances both self-efficacy and mathematical literacy skills. Conversely, while self-efficacy positively influenced mathematical literacy skills, the effect was not statistically significant.
