Abstract

This study aims to examine tambar kuning, a traditional medicine in the Batak Karo community, as an ecological representation through an ecolinguistic approach. Tambar kuning consists of two main types: kuning melas (hot balm) and kuning mbergeh (cold balm), each used according to bodily conditions and environmental factors. The research was conducted in Gurusinga Village, Karo Regency, using a descriptive qualitative method. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and literature study. The findings show that tambar kuning not only functions as a healing agent but also reflects the Karo people's local knowledge in utilizing natural resources. Its composition is based on local flora, selected for their warming or cooling effects. This practice demonstrates a strong interrelation between language, culture, and ecology. Furthermore, the lexical items related to tambar kuning serve as verbal representations of the community's ecological knowledge system. The study concludes that tambar kuning is an intangible cultural heritage containing ecological and linguistic values that should be preserved as part of the collective identity of the Karo people.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of Tawar Penggel as a traditional healing system of the Batak Karo community in North Sumatra, in the form of a herbal oil remedy (minak) made from 28 local plant species used to treat bone fractures and musculoskeletal disorders. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation conducted in Suka Julu Village, Karo Regency. The findings indicate that the practice of Tawar Penggel is still actively preserved by the Batak Karo community in Suka Julu Village, Berastagi District, Karo Regency. The practice involves 28 local plant species as the main ingredients in the preparation of minak, including leaves, roots, stems, tubers, sap, and spices. All materials are sourced from the surrounding environment, both from wild-growing plants and those cultivated in a simple manner by the community. This study contributes to the documentation of local wisdom and the development of ecolinguistic studies grounded in tradition and environmental context.

Abstract

This study analyzes the linguistic landscape of the Sisingamangaraja Palace area in Humbang Hasundutan Regency as a representation of cultural identity, language ideology, and strategies for preserving cultural heritage in public space. The study is grounded in Landry and Bourhis’s linguistic landscape theory and Stuart Hall’s perspective of cultural representation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through visual observation, photographic documentation, and interviews with key informants. Data were interpretively analyzed to examine the use of Indonesian, Batak Toba language, English, and Batak script across various visual media. The findings indicate that the linguistic landscape functions not only informationally but also symbolically, representing historical legitimacy, cultural authority, and spirituality, while serving as a site of negotiation between locality, nationality, and globality in strengthening the collective memory of the Batak community.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms of symbols, their semiotic meanings, and their functions within the martumpol tradition among the Toba Batak community. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed, involving data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using a semiotic perspective to understand the system of signs present in the martumpol procession. The results of the study indicate that the martumpol tradition encompasses various forms of symbols, such as verbal, nonverbal, material, ritual actions, and relational symbols. These symbols are interrelated and form a cohesive system of meaning within the cultural context. In semiotic analysis, the meaning of symbols in martumpol is divided into three levels: denotative, connotative, and ideological. At the denotative level, these symbols are interpreted literally, while at the connotative level, they reflect cultural values such as love, respect, and solidarity. At the ideological level, the symbols depict the norms, values, and social structures of the Batak Toba community, particularly within the dalihan na tolu kinship system. Furthermore, the symbols found in the martumpol tradition play a significant role in social life, including serving as a means to legitimize relationships, strengthen solidarity, build trust, and act as a medium for social control and cultural education. This tradition also demonstrates an adaptive nature in response to changing times without losing its fundamental meaning. Thus, martumpol functions not only as a traditional ritual but also as a tool for preserving the cultural values and identity of the Batak Toba community.
