Abstract

Tafsir of Sayyid Ahmad Khan represents a significant intellectual contribution to Islamic thought, emphasizing a rational and contextual approach in understanding the Qur’an. This study aims to analyze how Khan interprets Qur’anic verses by taking into account social, historical, and contemporary scientific contexts, making his exegesis relevant and applicable to modern society. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method based on library research, collecting data through the review of literature, books, journal articles, and credible online sources. The analysis reveals three main aspects in Khan’s tafsir: (1) rationality in interpreting divine revelation to align with logic and scientific knowledge, (2) the use of tafsir as a tool for intellectual renewal and apologetics to address external criticism and social challenges, and (3) contextualization to ensure that Qur’anic verses can be applied in modern life without compromising moral and legal values of Islam. Therefore, Khan’s tafsir not only explains the text literally but also provides moral, social, and political guidance that remains relevant, making it a model of integration between revelation and human reason. This study recommends utilizing Khan’s tafsir as a reference for academics, Islamic education practitioners, and the wider Muslim community to understand the Qur’an rationally, critically, and contextually.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of non-transparent polygamy that went viral in Indonesia in 2025 through the lens of Muhammad Syahrur’s Theory of Limits (Nazhariyyat al-Ḥudūd). The issue sparked extensive public debate regarding marital ethics, honesty, and the moral boundaries that govern contemporary polygamous practices. This research employs a qualitative library-based method, utilizing intra-textual analysis of Qur’anic verses alongside a review of Syahrur’s major works. Social data from the viral polygamy incident are incorporated to contextualize the ethical problems arising from the lack of transparency in modern practices. The findings reveal that, according to Syahrur, polygamy is not an absolute male right but a morally restricted action governed by minimum and maximum limits designed to ensure justice and protect women. Non-transparent polygamy violates the minimum threshold of justice by depriving women of accurate information, damaging trust, and causing psychological and social harm. Within the framework of the Theory of Limits, such practice constitutes an act of injustice (ẓulm) and contradicts the higher objectives of the Sharia (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah). This study concludes that Syahrur’s Theory of Limits is highly relevant as an ethical paradigm for assessing modern polygamy. Polygamy can only be justified when practiced within strict moral boundaries that uphold transparency, honesty, and justice as essential principles of Muslim family life.
THE INTEGRATION OF MODERN SCIENCE IN THE INTERPRETATION OF THE VERSES OF THE COSMOS: A STUDY OF THE WORK OF ZAGHLUL AL-NAJJAR IN MUKHTARÂT MIN TAFSÎR AL-ÂYÂT AL-KAWNIYYAH FI AL-QUR'ÂN AL-KARÎM JUZ 1 Maulidya Rahmani; Fadlan Nur Mubarok; Suhadi; Andi Rosa

Abstract

This research aims to explore how modern science is integrated in the interpretation of the verses of the cosmos in the Qur'an through an analysis of the book Mukhtarât min Tafsîr al-Âyât al-Kawniyyah fi al-Qur'ân al-Karîm Juz 1 by Zaghlul al-Najjar. This study emerged in line with the development of the method of scientific interpretation in the study of the Qur'an today that seeks to connect the text of revelation with discoveries in modern science. The method used in this study is a literature review with a descriptive-analytical approach to the interpretation of the verses of the cosmos in the work. The data used came from the main sources, namely the books analyzed as well as various additional literature related to the interpretation of modern science and science. The findings of the study show that Zaghlul al-Najjar relates the verses of the cosmos to a variety of modern scientific concepts such as cosmology, geology, meteorology, and oceanography. This connection can be seen in the interpretation of verses that discuss the creation of the universe, the expansion of the cosmos, the structure of the earth and the role of mountains, the water cycle, and the phenomenon of the meeting of the two seas. With this approach, the content of the Qur'an is not only interpreted as a theological message, but also as a signal that can be investigated from a scientific point of view. The interpretation made reflects an attempt to show the harmony between the images in the Qur'an and modern scientific results. This research also reveals that Zaghlul al-Najjar's thought contributes significantly to the development of scientific interpretation by presenting an integrated model that involves revelation and science in an interdisciplinary manner. However, this approach requires methodological caution so as not to create an overly forced interpretation of scientific theories that are always changing. Therefore, this study emphasizes that scientific interpretation has great potential to enrich the study of the contemporary Qur'an and open up opportunities for dialogue between religion and science in understanding the universe.

Abstract

The global environmental crisis demands a renewed interpretation of religious moral sources, including the Qur’an, as a foundation for ecological ethics. This study explores the hermeneutical thought of Muḥammad Ḥusain Thabathaba’i in al-Mizan fi Tafsir al-Qur’an to examine the relevance of the Qur’anic concept of khalifah (vicegerent) in addressing contemporary ecological challenges. Methodologically, this research employs a qualitative, library-based approach with an ecological hermeneutic analysis that integrates Qur’anic self-interpretation (tafsir bi al-Qur’an), Sadrian rational philosophy, and modern environmental awareness. The findings reveal that in Thabathaba’i’s framework, humankind as khalifah is not an absolute ruler over nature but a guardian of cosmic balance, subject to divine law. His interpretation of verses such as Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 30, al-Rum [30]: 41, and al-A‘raf [7]: 56 indicates that environmental degradation stems from humanity’s deviation from its primordial role as God’s trustee. Therefore, Thabathaba’i’s hermeneutics can serve as a conceptual foundation for developing an Islamic environmental ethics grounded in spirituality and moral responsibility. This research contributes to Qur’anic studies by expanding the scope of Qur’anic hermeneutics toward ecological praxis, enriching Islamic eco-theology discourses, and offering an alternative epistemic response to the current global ecological crisis.
