Abstract

The Minimum Competency Assessment (MCA) measures students’ numeracy skills, a crucial ability in the 21st-century digital era. However, PISA and the 2024 Indonesian Education Report show that Indonesian students’ numeracy skills remain low. This study aims to describe students’ numeracy skills in solving MCA questions on geometry and measurement content. The method used is descriptive with a qualitative approac. Data were collected through triangulation involving test results from seven MCA numeracy questions on geometry and measurement and through interviews. The subjects of this study consisted of 32 eighth-grade students from SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. The analysis of students’ answers revealed that 46.88% were categorized as low, 43.75% as moderate, and only 9.38% demonstrated a high level of numeracy proficiency. Interviews were conducted with selected students based on the results of the response analysis. Students in the high category were able to understand the context, interpret visual information, and apply reasoning and geometric concepts to real-life situations. They demonstrated the full range of cognitive processes, although improvements in accuracy are still needed. Students in the moderate category showed a lack of systematic thinking and often missed key details due to insufficient attentiveness when reading questions and selecting strategies. Meanwhile, students in the low category experienced fundamental difficulties in understanding visual information, units, and problem contexts. Their responses tended to be based on guesses rather than logical calculation, indicating the need for intensive support and more foundational instruction.

Abstract

Differentiated instruction, a key component of the contemporary learning paradigm, aims to tailor teaching strategies to students' varied needs. Despite its pedagogical relevance, this approach has yet to become a central focus among classroom practices. This study examines the readiness of junior high school mathematics teachers in Pekanbaru City to implement differentiated instruction. Employing a descriptive quantitative design, data were collected from 30 participants via an online questionnaire. The instrument included closed-ended items measured on a Likert scale across four dimensions: (1) conceptual understanding of differentiated instruction, (2) readiness in instructional planning, (3) readiness in classroom implementation, and (4) readiness in assessment practices. Open-ended items were also included to explore implementation challenges. The results reveal a low overall level of understanding and readiness, with an average score of 2.49 across all measured dimensions. Key barriers include limited access to information, insufficient time allocation, and unsupportive learning environments. This study provides empirical insights into instructional preparedness and practical constraints, offering a basis for future interventions aimed at strengthening the adoption of differentiated instruction in mathematics education.

Abstract

This investigation was spurred by the poor academic results in mathematics of student due to difficulties in understanding mathematical concepts and the absence of involvement from students in the educational process. To address this issue, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model was implemented to improve the learning outcomes of class IX₂ students at Junior High School of YLPI P. Marpoyan Pekanbaru. Engaging 16 students (6 females and 10 males) from the odd semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, this research applied Classroom Action Research (CAR). The study was executed across two distinct cycles, each following a structured sequence of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The learning tools included Learning Objective Flow (ATP), teaching modules, and Student Worksheets (LKPD). The instruments used for data collection included observation sheets for classroom activities and mathematics learning tests. The results demonstrated that the PBL model integration positively affected students' learning outcomes. This was evident from the significant growth in learning mastery, which progressed from 37.5% at baseline to 68.75% and 93.75% in the first and second summative assessments, respectively. Ultimately, the PBL model proves effective in advancing both learning quality and students' mathematical achievement.

Abstract

This research was carried out because it was triggered by the low learning outcomes of eleventh-grade students at SMA IT Al-Fityah Pekanbaru. Classroom action research using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model was applied to enhance mathematical learning outcomes and the learning process. The study comprised two action cycles, progressing through four stages: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Conducted during the odd semesters of the 2023/2024 school year, the research involved 27 students in the eleventh grade at Al-Fityah SMA IT Pekanbaru. The research instruments included learning tools (such as syllabi, lesson plans, and student worksheets) and data collection instruments in the form of teacher-student activity sheets. These were analyzed descriptively narratively, along with student mathematics learning outcome tests, which were analyzed descriptively statistically. Data analysis revealed that the learning process, when applying the Problem-Based Learning model, consistently achieved expected progress in each meeting. The results indicated an increase in the number of students reaching the minimum achievement criteria (KKM). Before implementing the action, 44.44% of students achieved minimum achievement criteria (KKM) in the knowledge aspect. This percentage rose to 55.55% in cycle I and further increased to 77.78% in cycle II. Similarly, in terms of skill competency, the percentage of students reaching KKM was 55.25% in Cycle I and increased to 74.07% in Cycle II. Overall, the application of the PBL model positively impacted the learning process for eleventh-grade students at SMA IT Al-Fityah Pekanbaru.

Abstract

Many students struggle to recognize sides and angles, especially when shapes are irregular. Since playing is a natural activity for children, it can be used as an effective learning strategy. This study aims to develop a game-based learning media to help elementary school students learn geometry. The media developed is called Tangram Sultan, a geometry game combined with folklore from the Siak Sultanate in Riau. This study presents the development of Tangram Sultan using the ADDIE development model. The Tangram Sultan game was tested at SD IT Alfityah Pekanbaru Riau. The Tangram Sultan game is used as a medium to develop students' understanding of the angles and sides of various shapes of two-dimensional figures with the following activity stages: (1) introduction of Tangram Sultan media, (2) use of media according to learning objectives, and (3) evaluation of learning process. These media have been successful in helping students to identify angles and sides and count the number of sides and angles found in various unusual two-dimentional figures. Results showed that the media successfully helped students identify and count sides and angles in irregular shapes. 66% of students correctly identified the number of sides, and 69% correctly identified the number of angles. The game also made the classroom environment more fun and engaging. This study opens up possibilities for teachers to use a combination of different games in local contexts.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low mathematics learning outcomes of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Ujungbatu in the 2024/2025 academic year. The purpose of this research was to improve the learning process and enhance mathematics achievement through the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. This classroom action research was carried out in two cycles involving 34 students (17 female and 17 male) with heterogeneous abilities. The study focused on student learning activities and learning outcomes. Data were collected through observation sheets and learning achievement tests, and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively in a descriptive manner. The results showed a significant improvement in the learning process and student achievement after the application of the PBL model. The percentage of students who met the Criteria for Achievement of Learning Objectives increased gradually from 32.4% at the baseline to 50% in the first summative test, and further to 61.8% in the second summative test. These findings indicate that the implementation of the PBL model not only enhanced student engagement in the learning process but also contributed positively to improving mathematics learning outcomes among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Ujungbatu.

Abstract

Mathematical understanding is a fundamental component of mathematics learning, as it underpins the development of other essential mathematical competencies. However, many students tend to rely on memorizing formulas without achieving a deep conceptual understanding. This study aimed to analyze students' mathematical understanding in the topic of three-dimensional shapes with flat surfaces at the junior high school level. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving 25 students from SMP Negeri 12 Pekanbaru as research participants. Data were collected through two open-ended test items and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using indicators of mathematical understanding, including restating concepts, applying procedures algorithmically, and connecting concepts within and beyond mathematics. The results showed that the majority of students (76%) demonstrated a low level of mathematical understanding, while 12% were classified as having moderate understanding and 12% as having high understanding. Students in the high category were able to fulfill all indicators, whereas those in the moderate and low categories experienced difficulties, particularly in applying procedures algorithmically and establishing conceptual connections. These findings indicate the need for instructional practices that emphasize conceptual understanding and support students in meaningfully connecting mathematical concepts to problem-solving contexts.

Abstract

Mathematical connection skills are essential for solving Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problem, yet Indonesian students struggle to link concepts across contexts. This study investigates how junior high school students apply these skilss in flat-sided space geometry, addressing gaps in contextual and interdisciplinary problem solving. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed with 18 Class VIII students at MTs Daarun Nahdhah Bangkinang. Data were collected through a validated essay text (expert judgment: k=0.82) measuring three indicators: (1) inter-mathematical concept connection, (2) mathematics to other fields applications, and (3) real world problem solving. Responses were scored using a rubric (0-4 scale) and analyzed thematically by ability level(high/medium/low). Only 28% of students excelled in connecting mathematical concept (indicator 1), while 22% performed well in interdisciplinary applications (indocator 2). Real world problem solving (indicator 3) showed the lowest mastery (11%). High ability students demonstrated coherent relational understanding, whereas medium/low ability students relied on rote memorization or made calculation error. The finding highlight critical gaps in students ability to contextualize mathematics, emphasizing the need for scaffolding in curriculum design. Implications suggest integrating real world examples and interdisciplinary tasks to strengthen HOTS based connection.
