Abstract

Abstract

Problem-solving skills are not only correlated to academic success but also to increased competitiveness in a professional environment. However, many junior high school students have both weak mathematical problem-solving and teamwork skills. This study aims to describe the improvement of mathematical problem-solving and teamwork skills of students using the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model and scientific learning. This study is a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental method, using Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The population in this study consisted of 186 junior high school students in Bengkalis Regency. Data collection techniques were carried out through mathematical problem-solving ability tests and teamwork questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out using normalized gain (N-Gain) and one-way ANOVA. Based on the results of the data analysis, the results obtained were that students in the PjBL group showed a higher increase in problem-solving and teamwork skills with N-gains of 0.48 and 0.42, respectively, compared to the control class which obtained N-gains of 0.21 and 0.09, respectively. Teamwork skills consistently improved across all grades, while improvement in problem-solving skills varied according to students' initial abilities. This study supports existing research by integrating cognitive and affective aspects of problem-solving and financial literacy skills into everyday life.

Abstract

This research was conducted due to the fact that the level of mathematical connection ability of junior high school students was still relative low. This study aims to describe students' mathematical connection abilities based on students' self-confidence, especially in the topic of building flat sides. Self-confidence is one of the psychological aspects to see the success of learning in the school. The subjects of this study were the second grade students which is in the class VIII B as many as 25 people from SMP Negeri 3 Bangkinang. This research used a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The instruments used in this study include a mathematical connection ability test and a self-confidence questionnaire. The stages of the research consista of 4 stages, namely: 1) filling out the self-confidence questionnaire, 2) giving mathematical connection ability test questions, 3) analyzing the data, and 4) drawing the conclusions. The results of the research has shown that: 1) Overall students' mathematical connection abilities get an average of 57%, which means that students' mathematical connection abilities are in a fairly good category, 2) Students with high self-confidence have an average mathematical connection ability of 60 %, 3) Students with moderate self-confidence have an average mathematical connection ability of 58.6%, 4) Students with low self-confidence have an average mathematical connection ability of 52.6% which is included in the poor category. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that students who have high self-confidence have better mathematical connection abilities rather than students who have moderate and low self-confidence.

Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the learning process must be carried out online. During the implementation of learning, it is undeniable that there are many complaints from various parties, especially students who judge online learning to be less effective. This study is a qualitative research with a descriptive method that aims to provide an overview of the effectiveness of online-based mathematics learning carried out at SMKN 2 Tanah Putih during the Covid-19 pandemic. The data collection technique was carried out using a google form questionnaire "Analysis of the implementation of online-based mathematics learning" with research subjects as many as 10 male students and 10 female students in class XI at SMKN 2 Tanah Putih. The data analysis used is descriptive statistics using the Miles & Huberman analysis model which consists of three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that the implementation of online learning in mathematics subjects at SMKN 2 Tanah Putih was categorized as less effective with an effectiveness level of 59.4%. Less effective learning is caused by factors that affect the online learning at SMKN 2 Tanah Putih which can be seen in technical indicators and implementation of learning.

Abstract

Many students struggle to recognize sides and angles, especially when shapes are irregular. Since playing is a natural activity for children, it can be used as an effective learning strategy. This study aims to develop a game-based learning media to help elementary school students learn geometry. The media developed is called Tangram Sultan, a geometry game combined with folklore from the Siak Sultanate in Riau. This study presents the development of Tangram Sultan using the ADDIE development model. The Tangram Sultan game was tested at SD IT Alfityah Pekanbaru Riau. The Tangram Sultan game is used as a medium to develop students' understanding of the angles and sides of various shapes of two-dimensional figures with the following activity stages: (1) introduction of Tangram Sultan media, (2) use of media according to learning objectives, and (3) evaluation of learning process. These media have been successful in helping students to identify angles and sides and count the number of sides and angles found in various unusual two-dimentional figures. Results showed that the media successfully helped students identify and count sides and angles in irregular shapes. 66% of students correctly identified the number of sides, and 69% correctly identified the number of angles. The game also made the classroom environment more fun and engaging. This study opens up possibilities for teachers to use a combination of different games in local contexts.

Abstract

Mathematical understanding is a fundamental component of mathematics learning, as it underpins the development of other essential mathematical competencies. However, many students tend to rely on memorizing formulas without achieving a deep conceptual understanding. This study aimed to analyze students’ mathematical understanding in the topic of three-dimensional shapes with flat surfaces at the junior high school level. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving 25 students from SMP Negeri 12 Pekanbaru as research participants. Data were collected through two open-ended test items and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using indicators of mathematical understanding, including restating concepts, applying procedures algorithmically, and connecting concepts within and beyond mathematics. The results showed that the majority of students (76%) demonstrated a low level of mathematical understanding, while 12% were classified as having moderate understanding and 12% as having high understanding. Students in the high category were able to fulfill all indicators, whereas those in the moderate and low categories experienced difficulties, particularly in applying procedures algorithmically and establishing conceptual connections. These findings indicate the need for instructional practices that emphasize conceptual understanding and support students in meaningfully connecting mathematical concepts to problem-solving contexts.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of students’ critical mathematical thinking skills in the topic of linear equations. The purpose of this research was to analyze the critical thinking abilities of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tapung Hulu. A descriptive research method was employed with a sample of 23 students. Data were collected through two essay-based test items developed based on four indicators of critical thinking: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. The results indicated that most students struggled to meet these indicators. The percentage of achievement for each indicator was as follows: interpretation (59.24%), analysis (48.91%), evaluation (43.48%), and inference (19.02%). The average critical thinking score was 42.66%, placing it in the very low category. These findings suggest that students’ critical mathematical thinking skills in solving linear equation problems remain underdeveloped. Therefore, it is necessary to implement learning strategies that foster critical thinking through contextual problem-solving activities.
