Abstract

Background: hronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a nutritional problem that often occurs in pregnant women due to chronic energy deficiency over a long period of time. Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in developing countries is the cumulative result of a state of malnutrition since the fetal period, infancy, and childhood that can continue into adulthood. Pregnant women with CED are at risk of giving birth to babies with low birth weight (LBW). Objective: This study aims to analyze the causes of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CHD) in pregnant women in Batuputih Laok Village. Method: This research method is qualitative with a descriptive research design through a phenomenological approach. The research subjects ware taken purposively. The research subjects ware pregnant woman with anemia in Batuputih Laok Village as key informants with a total of 6 people. Results: Informants have an age range of 20-29 years with elementary, high school, and D3 education. All informants had anemia and LILA <23.5 cm so they were classified as SEVERE. In addition, the results of the in-depth interview showed that pregnant women did not want to consume foods with balanced nutrition during their pregnancy. In addition, pregnant women did not consume fish and other proteins because they did not like the fishy smell and there were restrictions on fish consumption. Some informants sometimes only eat one meal a day even though they are pregnant. Informants did not take Fe because they did not like taking medicine, and there were informants who did not take Fe during their five-month pregnancy due to nausea. Conclusion: CED in pregnant women is caused by consumption patterns that do not want to consume high-protein foods, the existence of taboos from parents, food menus that are not diverse, food portions that are less than calorie needs, lack of meal frequency, and not taking Fe. Therefore, there is a need for counseling and nutritional counseling for pregnant women to increase knowledge about the importance of balanced nutrition for pregnant women and to correct misconceptions about food abstinence.

Abstract

Background: The high prevalence of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in Bondowoso Regency, affecting 16.4% of women of reproductive age and 17.67% of pregnant women in 2023, indicates the need for further analysis of its contributing factors. CED increases the risk of maternal and infant mortality, as well as adverse cases such as low birth weight and stunting. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze suspected contributing factors and determine the most dominant factor associated with Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women in the working area of Tlogosari Health Center, Bondowoso Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a case-control design, involving 96 pregnant women (48 with CED and 48 without CED) in Tlogosari Subdistrict. The analyzed variables included age, education, history of infectious diseases, parity, pregnancy spacing, dietary patterns, nutritional knowledge, and socioeconomic status. Data were collected through questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, odds ratios, and logistic regression. The sample was selected using simple random sampling. Results: The logistic regression test results indicated that nutritional knowledge (OR=7.509; 95%CI=1.948-28.954; p-value=0.003) and history of infectious diseases (OR=0.091; 95%CI=0.023-0.367; p-value=0.001) were significantly associated with Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women in the working area of Tlogosari Community Health Center. Conclusions: Poor nutritional knowledge and a history of infectious diseases were significantly associated with CED, with nutritional knowledge emerging as the most dominant factor. Improving personal hygiene practices and enhancing nutritional education during pregnancy are essential to reduce the risk of CED.

Abstract

Background: The double burden of malnutrition among pregnant women remains a critical public health issue in Indonesia. Cultural values, traditions, and patriarchal norms strongly influence caregiving practices, food distribution, and dietary intake within households, thereby shaping maternal nutritional status and contributing to stunting in children. Methods: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review approach by searching Google Scholar and ResearchGate databases using the keywords “Stunting,” “Culture,” “Tradition,” “Customs,” “Parenting,” and “Double Burden of Malnutrition.” Articles were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in nine eligible studies from an initial 340 and 9 article in analyze. Results: The review revealed that patriarchal culture leads to unequal food distribution and limited decision-making power for women, increasing the risk of micronutrient deficiencies despite excess caloric intake. Food taboos during pregnancy and postpartum further restrict protein and micronutrient consumption. Moreover, early marriage practices and low parental nutrition literacy exacerbate intergenerational malnutrition, where obese mothers coexist with stunted children. On the other hand, evidence highlights the positive role of fathers’ involvement in caregiving and household food decisions, which contributes to improved child nutritional outcomes. Conclusion: The double burden of malnutrition among pregnant women is not merely a biomedical problem but a socio-cultural construct shaped by patriarchal norms, food taboos, and early marriage practices. Addressing this issue requires culturally sensitive nutrition interventions that empower women, promote gender equality, enhance parental nutrition literacy, and strengthen fathers’ roles in childcare and food management to break the cycle of malnutrition across generations.

Abstract

Excessive consumption of sugar, salt, and fat among adolescents remains a public health particularly related to low nutritional literacy and limited understanding among students regarding safe limits for sugar, salt, and fat (SSF) consumption. The Youth Red Cross (PMR) as part of the school community has strategic potential as a partner and promoter of peer health, but still needs capacity building in nutrition education. To address this issue, school-based nutrition education activities are implemented as a community engagement program with the aim of increasing students' knowledge, awareness, and involvement in promoting healthier consumption of SSF. The activity involved 150 Youth Red Cross (PMR) students from five senior and vocational high schools in Banyuwangi Regency. Teachers and PMR members were actively engaged as community partners in planning, facilitating, and supporting the implementation of the program. Educational activities were delivered through interactive discussions, the use of familiar food examples, reflective group sessions, and basic health screening to connect nutrition messages with students’ real-life conditions. Program outcomes were documented as part of routine activity evaluation using a 10-item questionnaire administered before and after the sessions. An increase in average scores was observed, indicating improved short-term understanding; however, the primary contribution of the program lies in enhanced student engagement, peer interaction, and awareness of healthier dietary choices. The activity also encouraged reflection and dialogue within the school environment, suggesting positive social impact beyond individual knowledge gains. Overall, this community-based initiative demonstrates a feasible and empowering model for integrating nutrition education into routine school health activities.
