Abstract

One of the important parts of a research article is an introduction. As the initial part of an article, it should provide all the ideas confirming that the study needs to be conducted. Therefore, the ideas presented should be well organized. One of the ways to confirm a good organization of ideas in the introduction is by paying attention to the theme structure used to build the clauses. This study analyzed the theme types and structure used in the introduction section of articles published in Indonesian national journals. This study was conducted using qualitative content analysis. Using a documentation technique, the data were collected from 15 research articles published in the latest volumes (2020-2021) of four Indonesian national journals. The data were analyzed using a content analysis method, following the established procedure of the clause theme analysis. The results of the study found the dominant use of simple themes in the introduction section of the research articles, indicating a lack of ideas organization. Besides, it was also found that the theme structure of the clauses was realized in nine theme patterns. These patterns are used in presenting different contents of an introduction. It is concluded that theme types and patterns contribute to producing a good quality introduction section of a research article.

Abstract

Abstract

The Siladang language is one of the endangered languages in Indonesia. Siladang ethnic lives in two villages namely Sipapaga and Aik Banir in Panyabungan District, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra Province. The condition of Siladang speakers is endangered because all Siladang speakers are bilingual/multilingual and use Mandailing and Indonesia language dominantly in terms of language use for socializing and school. This program aimed to transfer knowledge about language documentation using TELAN, a technique of using ELAN software (Eudico Linguistics Annotator) to increase the human resources of the Siladang young generation hence they are directly involved in carrying out documentation of their own language as well as an effort to revitalize the Siladang language. FGD activities were carried out offline and online because the service program implementation team continues to accompany the documentation team in facing obstacles and problems in recording and using ELAN software. Through the provision of recording tools and the transfer of language documentation knowledge, there has been an increase in the ability of the documentation team consisting of Siladang high students to carry out language recording and annotation using ELAN software.

Abstract

The present study analyses the realisation of onomatopoeia and determines the extent of the onomatopoeic words in creating meaningful imagery, illustrating actions as well as evoking readers’ sensory associations toward the storyline of a webcomic entitled “Aquaman: Through Fire and Water”. Qualitatively, this study used Krippendorff’s (2018) Content Analysis (CA) as an approach. Methodologically, Miles & Huberman’s (1994) interactive qualitative data analysis was applied to analyse the data. Respectively, Bredin’s (1996) framework of Onomatopoeia was also adopted to look at how the onomatopoeic words are realised. The findings showed that Direct Onomatopoeia (50%) is the most occurring type from 26 onomatopoeic words found, followed by Associative Onomatopoeia (46,15%) and Exemplary Onomatopoeia (3,84%). The realisations of the onomatopoeic words reveal that the integration of the onomatopoeic realisations with the aesthetic depiction of the images throughout the webcomic can fairly create meaningful imagery and illustrate actions of the webcomic. Thus, it evokes readers’ sensory associations toward the scenes and storyline of the webcomic. Keyword: Onomatopoeia, Figure of Speech, Webcomic, Aquaman: Through Fire and Water
